  1. Re banishing Gone With The Wind I was one who, while shielding my child as much as possible from things I considered inappropriate, used every opportunity that arose to say "Some people do this but we don't and this is why." That is how we discussed GWTW and related topics. I read this recently in a national newspaper: I am wondering if people claiming the film to be racist have even seen it. First of all, Mammy is the smartest character in the film. Second of all, did they miss the part where all the slaves ran away after the war? What is this then about the slaves being 'happy and contented' as many claim? Third of all, yes Prissy is portrayed as simple-minded, but not more so than Aunt Pittypat. She's also only supposed to be 16. Fourth of all, I question whether the film 'romanticizes' the old South as people claim. Perhaps it may seem so, if you don't get past the opening credits. But the characters that represent the old South (Ashley Wilkes, Melanie Hamilton, Scarlett's mother) are portrayed as either weak or doomed to die. The Wilkes family is in-bred ("The Wilkes' always marry their cousins") and unable to deal with reality. Further, the aristocrats are portrayed as foolish and arrogant (Rhett on the South's slim chances against the North: "All we've got is cotton, slaves and arrogance"). The film's heroes are Scarlett and Rhett, who never fit in in the old South and its "stupid honor." They represent the new South, the real hero of the movie.
  2. I've said this here before and I can't remember the context or when it was, but each of us decides which is our primary descriptor (among the many available to us): age, gender, race, socio-economic status, etc. My primary descriptor is "female" and most of my world view takes on that flavor before any of my other descriptors kick in. The BLM movement absolutely is valid but women and children have been waiting for deliverance as long as, and perhaps longer than, POC have waited. In 1971 John Lennon wrote a song about women being the n-word of the world, something that has been true since the beginning of time. In the US adult females and everyone under 18 are large population groups and society doesn't rise up about crimes against them to the extent that it should. All females = 51%, anyone under 18 = 24% and blacks = 13%. I wish the BLM movement much success and I hope women and children are next. This article got me "in a mood" today and I sorta love it that the writer's first name is Pagan. The Rape Kit’s Secret History This is the story of the woman who forced the police to start treating sexual assault like a crime. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/06/17/opinion/rape-kit-history.html?action=click&module=Opinion&pgtype=Homepage
  3. Today's bonus question: Which disturbed you more - the "art" on the wall or Janelle's mug?
  4. Thinking about those rubes in chi chi La Jolla cracks me up.
  5. At the top of Meri's post I see a series of five emojis, including the US flag: flag tree flag tree flag Why do some of us see (um) instead of a flag?
  6. She should check in with Jonah. He's got a whale of a story for her.
  7. When it was Brandi's son Kyle characterized it as "I mean, hello. Parenting 101."
  8. "Whip it out and go." Kyle was appalled. https://www.bravotv.com/the-real-housewives-of-beverly-hills/season-2/episode-5/videos/whip-it-out-and-go
  9. There were a couple versions of that situation and one alleges rape. I read that a third party, another actor/not Feldman, said Haim told him that he/Haim and Charlie smoked a joint and then had consensual sex. This was when they were 13 and 19 and making a movie. Haim thought they were embarking on some kind of relationship but when it was over Charlie turned as cold as ice and remained that way. Haim was devastated. In light of Charlie's ensuing reputation as a user of people and abuser of substances, I don't doubt it.
  10. Lemon. Pound. Cake. I will gladly be your friend!
  11. To me, trying to like Whoopi is similar to the fate of whoever that was in mythology who spent eternity rolling a boulder uphill only to have it roll back down to the bottom every time he reached the top. (Sisyphus, I looked it up).
  12. Well, as the saying goes, some of us marry our father.
  13. Besides that, her wording makes it sound like the business is 150 years old.
  14. A Flaky Pilot goes by many names and all are classified as a sustenance food item most often seen in outdoor, military and survival kits. Kohola is correct in saying that it's a variety of hardtack. It's sad to hear that Sandy and her bro were disappointed after longing for them but uplifting to know that their dad treated them to something he knew they wanted very much.
  15. She's like the line from the horrible sequel that was Godfather III: Just when I thought I was out they pull me back in. "Just when I think something about Meri is nice..."
  16. Good to know it's on the schedule next week. I was bummed, thinking that if tonight was the end of S13 we might have to wait a whole long time for S14 to begin. TY. Jillian's turn for the worse was such a heart breaker, even though I halfway expected it after Jeff mentioned the probability. I knocked on wood when he said he's living on borrowed time because of his cancer.
  17. Links that pertain to the final episode. They discuss the same thing but there's a decent variety of nuance.
  18. Fasten your seat belt, keep your arms and legs inside the car, and enjoy the ride!
  19. I have to wait another hour to see it in my time zone so I just glanced at the new posts. The description of the ep on the site and in the TV guide mentioned Covid scenarios so that's why I was confused by the numbering/labeling of the Season.
  20. The new episode tonight is labeled S6 Ep14 but the AP website tells us that S6 Ep13 debuted on Aug 3, 2019. Wouldn't you think that 10 months after the last fresh episode this one would be numbered as belonging to a new season? When does the "real" new season start? Confused...
  21. No way! I would give you paper booties to wear over your shoes. They have a non-slip tread on the soles, I made sure of that. I bought them for those who prefer not to remove their shoes (or when going in and out while doing their job makes it impractical). I've been in this house since November and 99% of the installers and handymen who have been here brought their own, including the carpet installer. I have barely dented the 60-pair package I bought for $14 from Amazon.
  22. There's a screamin' e-book deal available today at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, etc. A set of four bios, 906 pages (!) for $2.99: Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Ingrid Bergman The author is Grace May Carter. There goes the weekend.
  23. Nice photos. Kanye is foxy. I've always liked Kris' haircut, it flatters her and easily falls into place. Kim should use makeup in her part, the spray tan face is jarring with the white, white part in her hair. Thank you for posting, ginger90.
  24. I don't need to say anything. I have a pretty little sign right inside my front door that says "Ahoha - Please Remove Your Shoes - Mahalo" and visitors see some flip flops lying right next to the door. Those particular flip flops are my shower shoes but they don't know that so most people step out of their shoes right away and the few times it's been a repairman I have elasticized paper shoes for them to slip on over their shoes. Quite often people have said "Hey, I ask the same thing at my house." If you don't have a sign and someone hesitates you could say "We just had the carpets cleaned" or "The carpet is new." My carpet does happen to be new (and I love it!) so if I don't wear shoes indoors why should they? However it goes down, it's your home and your rules.
