  1. That was my take too until recent developments with Maya. I'm not convinced the writers were intending Caroline's disdaining treatment of Maya to be racist but the subtext was certainly there, IMO, just based on the optics of the situation. This show has an abundance of blonde women, most of whom are held in some kind of exalted status. One of the most exalted of them (whose arrival was like a modernized version of Botticelli's painting, The Birth of Venus) repeatedly, deliberately, and publicly took cruel and demeaning shots at the show's sole Black female character. On the surface, IMO it looked at least partially racial even if it wasn't intended to be. Futhermore, one of the two Black male characters also did little more than dump on Maya, as if that was to make what Caroline was doing okay. IMO, all it did was make Carter resemble a certain Black male stereotype which openly and bitterly hates on Black women at the expense of women of other races. Not sure if there were any Black writers on staff then but I should think they would've known how wrong that could look. For whatever reason, the writers/TPTB seem to have seen the error of their ways. Carter still criticizes Maya but it's with a lighter touch. She's allowed to explain her motivation--delusional though it may be--and she's no longer positioned as a either a weak victim or a mindless villain. They've evened up (IMO) the score between Caroline and Maya and now I think it makes more sense for Caroline to be calling her out. (But Caroline needs to avoid the "Myrna" stuff. I think that definitely looks borderline racist for largely historical reasons.)
  2. People who don't really care about the pregnancy and are trying to jinx it? I was surprised when she was running around telling everybody before she'd even seen a doctor to confirm it and am still surprised she hasn't called one of her famous press conferences to announce it.
  3. The apple didn't fall far from the tree.
  4. IIRC, didn't Nick sleep with Diane before Victor married her the second time? I thought Victor married her again in order to pull her away from Nick. He dangled some jewelry and new clothes in front of her and she didn't give Nick much of a second thought until Victor was clearly--and literally--throwing her out. (Which is why it was such a bizarre moment later when she basically sold Kyle to Victor even though Jack--his father--was still alive and in his life.) As far as Amy is concerned, I wasn't watching when that happened but the impression I got during Nick's special episode is that she was to show part of a developing pattern with him. He'd seduce one woman and once he had her, he'd feel comfortable keeping her in a holding pattern while he went after someone else. Then he'd dump her or she'd dump him but either way, he'd comfortably move on with the new person while the original woman/girl was left wondering WTF happened. His experience with Diane didn't fit pattern mainly because Victor stepped in and "overruled" him. Yep, he's like the Michael Bay of soaps. He just likes to blow shite up in as insane ways as possible. Y'all are not going to believe the fcukery that will transpire under Pratt's reign of terror.
  5. To clarify, I never said I believed it. What I do believe is that a not-insignificant number of other people seem to think it's true and have confirmed that it's also their experience. This show might be able to put the kibosh on the matter. Or not.
  6. I agree. So far the show has skated above the slapstick "LOLBLKPPL!" line that many Black-centric comedies have tended to sink below. However, I read discussion somewhere--it may have been here--that this show was probably going to run out of "Black-ish" things to build shows on. So, if they happen to need an idea I wouldn't mind seeing the leg-shaving thing addressed even if it may largely be a myth or mostly an older-generation notion. An easy scenario could be that Dre goes to shave one day, finds his razor is unexpectedly dull, and it turns out that one of the ladies in the house used it without warning him. That might be a good show to bring Jennifer Lawrence back for since her character seems the one mostly likely to drop an unexpectedly casual cultural reference. I'm wasn't either but googling brings up many articles and blog posts which mention the issue and they aren't all in the 2010 time-frame.
  7. My first time hearing it was back in 2010 when actress/comedienne Mo'Nique showed up at the Golden Globes wearing sheer hose over clearly unshaven legs. It was not a pretty sight. During the media storm that blew up afterward, the New York Times jumped into the fray. A certain Black woman blogger on political and cultural issues was quoted in the NYT article asserting that Black women were/are specifically taught not to shave their legs because it was/is considered something that "White people do". This is a sentiment that I remember being surprised to see repeated by posters on more than one forum. Apparently it is "a thing" but maybe one that doesn't come into public view very often. I've still never seen an explanation of why this belief would've developed to begin with. That's why I suggested it for Black-ish.
  8. Gwyneth has on occasion hung around with Beyoncé because of her husband Chris Martin's collabo with Jay Z. I wonder if that's where she picked up on "kitchen". I'd like to see the show touch on the "Black women don't shave their legs" thing. (And by "thing" I mean something alleged as a general fact which probably isn't.)
  9. How about both? As was mentioned upthread, he has to do something to keep loose cannon Maya placated while also pretending to Caroline that he truly wants to reconcile. I think Eric was dumb to make such a condition anyway. What's he going to do, put cameras in their bedroom to make sure they're "fully" reconciling? Why does Eric keep putting Caroline in a position to be worked by one of his sons? I think maybe Bill beat up the wrong Forrester. Maya needs to go take a Mistressing for Beginners class because plenty of women in her position have found themselves waiting for years--decades even--until the guy allegedly "can" leave his wife. I doubt Maya will last more than a couple of months tops, though. I really hope someone figures out Rick's ruse and drops the bomb at a board meeting the same way Maya did. Bonus points if it's Ridge or Caroline who does the honors.
  10. I don't mind Kelly or CM. Yes, the character underwent a somewhat jarring and largely unexplained change when CM took over the role but I put the blame for that on the MWTs. The character had never been well fleshed-out (and still isn't, IMO) and it seemed like Kelly's new sophisticated personality came out of thin air. They've also emphasized Kelly's emotional neediness without really explaining where it comes from. After a while that gets annoying to watch and you just want to go all Cher's character in Moonstruck on her. Plus, since there appears to be (IMO) almost guaranteed resentment aimed at actors coming from one of the dead soaps--particularly AMC it seems--I think CM had her work cut out for her and she's handled it well. If I had to make a list of characters (or their portrayers) who need to be gone, Kelly would not be on it. However, if it becomes clear that the writers don't want to fix the partially-constructed mess they've made with her, then all bets are off. For the time being, the possibly impending battle between Kelly and Phyllis could be quite interesting given that there are two very strong, veteran soap actresses involved. If the writing rises to the occasion, I think they will too.
  11. Oh Taylor is certainly a "world class beauty". It's just that the world in question is on Neptune.
  12. This was one of the most intense episodes of TV I've seen in a long time. Bravo. Doesn't matter. If he makes it out the current mess alive he'll still probably be convicted of treason and executed, right? And he'll have taken his wife's career down with him.
  13. Maybe her scorned lover will rat her out for spite. Boy was that random. Wonder what made her risk her marriage for that guy?
  14. I wonder how this will compare to Power? Empire will be on a regular broadcast network so it won't be able to get away with the kind of language and adult scenarios that Power can. Whatever, I have mixed feelings about Terrence Howard but I will support Taraji. (Maybe she could get Idris to do a cameo...)
  15. Yeah. I wonder if they're going to let Mariah comment on it (in that special way of hers) since none of the Abbotts or Newmans did? Yes, his ex Skye was first. (BTW, I'm cosigning on the speculation in another thread that Sage might actually be Skye, miraculously escaped from the volcano's fiery depths.)
  16. I think it's also probably because Native Americans weren't enslaved (at least not to the degree Black Africans were) and were here before the slaveholders gained a major foothold. It would be sort of a one-up to "my ancestors came over on the Mayflower".
  17. I've got Nate on the list too. He got a funny look when Annalise mentioned that she recommended that DNA be collected from men known to be associated with Lila. We don't know (yet) that Nate would be one of them but I think he seems as likely as anyone else if it's not Sam.
  18. Yes, that's my theory too. I'm just not sure whether he knows it. He seemed to be particularly moved by Sam's death so now I'm leaning more toward his knowing. Rebecca is going to be a bigger problem since she knows how Sam died. She's now in a position to blackmail all of them. Wonder who's gonna take her out?
  19. I thought the same. It reminded me of when sexagenarian Susan Lucci still trying to do her coy coquette routine on AMC. Not a good look.
  20. Nah, there's wasn't much heartfelt about it, IMO. He mainly did it so Eric wouldn't take the CEO job away from him. I think Caroline should tell him to go eff himself, or at least make firing Maya a condition of their reconciliation.
  21. WTF? Given all the less-than-subtle upstaging she was doing on Y&R, I think she's the last person who should be complaining about actors not letting each other shine. Not sure why a former cast member who's now on a competing soap merits their own thread...
  22. Yeah, the hair & makeup failed on her yesterday because those shots of Caroline from behind made it clear that there were extensions in there. ICAM. She's a cute girl but she doesn't have a runway model's body and doesn't move like one. The model is basically supposed to be a living clothes hanger and not try to outshine the outfit. Plus the dress was definitely no showstopper. It might have stopped traffic like a bad accident though. I know this show can't come up with it's own original couture but I thought all the dresses were meh. I feel like I've seen all of those dresses before but the show just added a slight variation here and there to make them seem original. They're certainly not good enough to pay tens of thousands of dollars for. But I guess we have to buy into the story that Caroline and Ridge are an AMAZING design team. Well, Gloria does have a certain campy edge to her. I thought she was fine but she doesn't really fit on this show. As far as Eric is concerned, she's way out of his preferred age range by several decades so I don't think there's any danger of a long-distance romance.
  23. Hmmmm, indeed if it turns out to be true. Crow. It's what for dinner.
  24. TK is in his wheelhouse now. Anyone who had the pleasure of watching the build up on AMC of the romance between Zach and Kendall would recognize several of his "patented" moves being deployed here. I'm surprised it took B&B this long to let him do his thing. Apparently all that's needed is a young, slightly troubled ingenue and he'll bring it. I'm still not on the Ridge&Caroline bandwagon (mostly because of the age difference) but I can appreciate the heat many see in the little dance they're doing.
