FilmNight: Movies you watched recently
Trini replied to Rushmoras's topic in Everything Else About Movies
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Well, now here's a dumb action flick I can recommend! Compared to Battleship, this had a much better script and characters (even if most of them were one-dimensional clichés); and it wasn't shy about being all about ridiculous action -- but ridiculous in a fun way. Not to mention the unintentional humor. -
Pre-release HISHE, don't know how much it counts as a spoiler, but it references clips of the film that were released, FYI, if one is avoiding too much info. It also mentions a couple of this summer's other big releases:

Finally saw this in its entirety, and I have to say, no matter what this was going to be tainted because of Ezra Miller's and WB's BTS shenanigans. But even besides that, you could tell this went through development hell, and that there was a mandate to connect it to the previous DC films. The lead was introduced in the Justice League film so a few reminders of the larger 'universe' would have been fine, but it was distracting how much Batman and Superman characters were a part of this. And yes, I know it's because they chose to adapt the Flashpoint story, but maybe they shouldn't have for The Flash's first film. Even if I put aside some of the obvious/distracting CGI, just the way they chose to portray certain scenes was off-putting. And it was ridiculous to me that they spent money to resurrect Christopher Reeves (badly) when all the actors who have played the Flash are alive and working, if they wanted some cameo easter eggs. Michael Keaton should have been in a Batman Beyond movie. The one part that mostly worked was the Allen family story, and Barry (kinda) learning to accept tragedy. We should have learned more about Central City, and Barry's world. [ETA:] And had a Flash rogue as the main threat. Anyway, I doubt we'll get another Flash film for a while -- if ever -- but they can go with Wally West (either one) maybe for the next one.

It's 85% at Rottentomatoes right now. Encouraging, but I'm still cautious because it's Gunn.

Late to the game, but just wanted to add another endorsement for Rye Lane. Mostly cute, funny, interesting cinematography; the leads really made this work, they had great chemistry together. I chuckled at the cameo.

I'm not much of a tea person, but the only brand of chai mix I've used is Blue Lotus Chai, they're a bit pricier, but they don't put sugar/sweeteners in their mixes.

With several films in the past year having actors in double roles, I've been really curious how filmmakers pull off some of those scenes. This article discusses how they 'doubled' Jim Carrey in Sonic 3; and I thought this was really interesting about him as a performer: And this one is about how it was done in Mickey 17: And this BTS featurette about the 'twinning' in SInners:

LOL -- It hopefully works in the context of the movie, but some things can stay in the comics, IMO.

Trailers & New Movies: Coming Soon to a Cinema Near You!

I imagine the Hollywood accountants and marketing execs would say 'yes'; but I don't mind a tease a year in advance. But I can also see how sometimes it's too much too soon. -
Faux Life: Things That Happen On TV But Not In Reality

I'm sure it's been mentioned in here already, but just saw another instance of a pet peeve: period pieces* with the women in full faces of modern makeup. Like, I know these things are filmed in the present day, so we probably can't get away from it completely, but at least tone down the mascara and lipstick! *(I'm mainly talking pre-twentieth century) -
Reviving this topic because it's summer! In my quest to use the can of mango puree that I bought like, last summer, I made a spiced mango lassi frozen yogurt. Came out pretty good, if I say so myself. Probably doesn't resemble a traditional mango lassi recipe, though; I think I had a higher ratio of mango, mainly because I love mango. 😀

You can't really blame that on Anna or any editor; print magazines in general are dying out. For various reasons, not just content.

Heh - yeah, the headlines keep saying she's 'stepping down', but it's more like she's stepping UP to a new position, and still has some overview of Vogue magazine.

LOL Which piece of news is this about?
-
I would have loved that, but with the show cancelled, it's probably never happening.

New trailer: Well, they were right to not show some of the more 'video-game-y' looking shots in the previous trailers.

More like 'Movie I Tried to Watch' ... Battleship : Never paid attention to this when it did come out; but I vaguely remembered that it was a dumb action flick (and that's fine every once in a while), but I was not prepared for how dumb this was! Apparently I found my limit. Only made it until the first big action scene after a half hour of dumb setup. 👎 Save yourself time and brain cells. -
The big marketing push has begun with this lengthy preview article at EW, with lots of quotes from the cast and director: 'Superman lights the way: How Hollywood's new Man of Steel shepherds the DC universe of tomorrow' Besides the magazine photo shoot, there are also some new promo pics at the link.

Equals (2015) So I completely missed that Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart made a movie together! This was apparently more of a streaming thing, and it had a small, limited release later. It's a sci-fi romance set in a future society where no one has emotions anymore, and those who do are considered to have a disease. Our two leads deal with 'catching' feelings, and hiding it from everyone else. I thought it was good; would recommend if you're a fan of Hoult or Stewart, or sci-fi romance. Great production values. Although I think this feels more like a short that managed to snag a big budget and some A-list talent. I know some might have an issue with its slow and subdued tone; but I think it fits the story. And they may have squeezed one too many plot twists into the third act, but I still think it works. -

Just me, or does that not sound like JLo?? -
Do the Globes decide which category a film goes in, or is it the submitter? It might also depend on the competition, the film's chance at winning might be better in one over the other.
