  1. Maybe they fudged a bit on hairstyles and beards to make identification of characters easier? Especially the beards -- if all the "hip" guys had beards I don't think I could tell any of them apart!
  2. Man, Hodiak really does make bad decisions when he's pickled, doesn't he? He nearly turned Manson into jelly. I almost felt sorry for the creep. (almost) And speaking of bad decisions, Hodiak really may have blundered in having a thing with Grace. I started off really liking the woman, but now . . .I raised an eyebrow over her bringing him (dragging him?) to that political fundraiser. She doesn't ask him whether he wants to go or not, it's just "I bought you a ticket. Be there." And, then, of course, there's that ridiculous "You're a failure" rant. Opal is starting to look pretty good, in comparison. Hmm, I guess that's all I have to say. Most other thoughts I had about this ep have already been expressed by others earlier in the thread.
  3. I'm about a third of the way through Shadow Prey, the second of John Sandford's Lucas Davenport suspense novels. I need a little light reading after that biography of Manson.
  4. Sorry, Ratgirl, didn't mean to steal your thunder. I'm sure everyone remembers you were the first to mention the book. I did notice he had written about the O.K. Corral and Bonnie and Clyde, and, since both topics interest me, I will be reading those when I have the time. You won't mind, will you, if I comment about them? Not in this thread, of course.
  5. I've recently finished reading Manson: The Life and Times of Charles Manson by Jeff Guinn, a very well-written book which I recommend to anyone with an interest in the case. I have Helter Skelter on hand, but I'm going to take a break before reading it. Too much of Manson is going to give me nightmares.
  6. Last night -- salmon steak with potato salad and green salad; tonight -- chicken piccata if I have time; otherwise a big salad using up some leftover beans, veggies, and cheese.
  7. You really didn't miss much. There were some interviews with Robert Keppel and Kathleen McChesney, also some news footage. It would have been okay, except they supplemented the good stuff with film clips from Cereal Filler. Like we needed more of that snoozer.
  8. Quite liked the first installment. Quirky, funny, with a hint of menace and mayhem to come. Just my sort of thing.
  9. I had a lazy Friday, too. Unfortunately, my no-cook meal wasn't so nice: "Most American Thickburger". Yes, I succumbed to temptation. Damn those commercials. So I ate the Angus beef patty topped with potato chips, cheese, pickles, onions, and a split hot dog, accompanied by fries and a diet coke. Hamburger was actually pretty good, the fries so-so, and the diet coke -- well, that was a gesture towards watching the old waistline. Or would have been if I hadn't followed up with a couple of ice cream bars. I'll need to be super-healthy this weekend to make up for this.
  10. And was extremely popular. Just about everyone played it. So far, the series has been pretty good in the matter of anachronisms, although I imagine a few might creep in now and then. Personally, it wouldn't bother me too much, unless it's something really glaringly obvious, like somebody using an iPad.
  11. Thanks for this -- I was a little bored with this ep, but did wonder if they were setting things up for later plot development. Anyone know how Aquarius is doing in the ratings? Just curious if it's likely to get another season.
  12. Gah!!! I'll bet someone buys it, though.
  13. Not sure I'm ready for another Serial Snoozer -- this one was bad enough.
  14. Just saw the second installment and it's no better than the first. There's a couple of things bugging me: First off, the guy playing Bundy doesn't look or act like him. This isn't trivial because one of the reasons Bundy was so successful at getting to his victims was his clean-cut upper -crust good looks and charm. He looked like the sort of guy a woman would want to bring home to meet her folks. No disparagement meant to the actor, but he looks pretty scruffy from the get-go. Secondly, there's the terrible dialogue. It makes me want to stick cotton in my ears so I don't have to hear it. I will say that the acting is generally okay. The cast seem to be doing their best with weak material.
  15. A couple of years ago I was looking for a new car, and was very tempted by a black 2013 Impala. As it happens, the first car I drove on a regular basis was also an Impala, a 67 or 68, a discard of my parents (not black, though). Nice car, although something of a gas guzzler and the dashboard clock never kept proper time. I didn't buy the black Impala. Ended up with something a bit more practical. I may regret it if I ever need to put a body in the trunk.
  16. I'm watching it, although I don't think it's particularly good. Material about Bundy always seems to grab my interest, even if it's mediocre stuff. I'm a long time resident of the Seattle area and also spent some time at Central Washington University shortly after he abducted a woman from off campus. So I remember the times and the fear the murders generated. I don't recall the press as dubbing him "Angel of Decay"; if they did, the name didn't stick. Anyway, I guess I'll watch the two remaining chapters.
  17. I'm not really sure how much effect the coverage of the Manson family had on middle-class paranoia -- mainstream society was already plenty nervous even before the murders. But it certainly didn't help matters any. I don't remember the news coverage as especially affecting my parents, teachers, or other adults. They were, of course, shocked by the violence of the murders, and it confirmed their belief that those long-haired weirdos were up to no good. It was disillusioning for those of us who naively believed that the counter-culture was going to usher in a wonderful new age. How many of these political activists and gurus, we wondered, were really rotten people? So we became far less trusting. (A good thing, actually) The thing is, there was so much violence and disruption in that era, the Tate-LaBianca murders were just one more item on the list.
  18. My mid-day dinner was Pad Thai with snow peas and a green salad with ginger sesame dressing.
  19. I've just started reading Jeff Guinn's biography of Charles Manson. It's well-written and seems to be very well researched. I've noticed that he's also written a book on the O.K. Corral, something that's always interested me, so that will be going on my "To Read" list.
  20. I'm reading the Manson biography by Jeff Guinn (an excellent read, by the way); I've just started the part in which Manson starts hanging out in Haight-Ashbury. Guinn hasn't mentioned the story of the young Charlie being traded for beer, but his childhood was certainly troubled enough, even without that. My impression, so far, is that, in spite of his less-than-ideal youth, Manson had sufficient resources to make a decent life for himself, had he chosen to do so. Instead, he preferred to exploit other people. It's a fascinating story, even if I feel increasingly repelled by Charley Manson.
  21. I had assumed the same thing, then wondered if I was a pervert for thinking so. I hope she didn't catch anything nasty from him.
  22. COOL!!! An excuse to visit Chuck's!
  23. I'm watching this the old fashioned way, as it's broadcast -- I feel a bit late to the party! I'll bet everyone else has seen the whole series already. Liked this episode pretty well; the pacing was much better this time around. Miscellaneous thoughts: Emma's father is a spineless creep. Cutler is a bad cop, possibly in both senses of the word. And he should have told his partner he was having an affair with his ex-wife. Figured Hodiak and Grace Karn would have a fling -- can't say I blame her too much, given who she's married to. I get the feeling Charmaine Tully is going to really kick some ass before the series is over. And I hope one of those asses belongs to the biker dude. In regards to the use of "ball" instead of "fuck" (and, by the way, did we really need a seven paragraph article on that topic?) : "ball" is not out of place for the era; the f-word just wasn't used as frequently back then. (although, I admit, the biker dude would probably say "fuck")
  24. I haven't seen much of John Noble's stuff. I remember him most as the host/narrator of Dark Matters. He certainly had a tremendous screen presence in that series, and was even a bit spooky. I'm rather looking forward to seeing him as Papa Holmes.
