  1. I'm sure the people getting scammed didn't put the whole amount, like $350,000, in at once. Maybe they started with $1,000. Then they see on the legitimate-looking app that they made a great profit. So they put in a little more. More success. And so on until they've invested hundreds of thousands.
  2. I can see Punkie as Fani Willis, but I'm not sure where the humor would come from.
  3. What? Don't you know that sex is only for procreation?
  4. I forgot about this part of the show. At first I wondered how such books were in school libraries, but I believe these were in public libraries, no? I wish people would mind their own business. I wonder if that's the same type of ripoff that I had at Christmas. I ordered an item from a site I later learned was a scam site. The stuff comes from China, but you don't get what you ordered. It would be 1) a low-quality item, like the rainbow tree; 2) a completely different low-quality item; or 3) nothing at all. I got a completely different item: fake RayBans. There's no response from "customer support." At least the rainbow tree lady got a big laugh out of it.
  5. I can't answer that. I have a Max subscription. (I was wondering why I had to start the thread.) I hadn't heard of pig butchering. That is so horrible, for both the ones being scammed and for the middle-men scammers who are forced to do this. I had no idea. Watching the father and then daughter start to cry made me cry. I was glad John said not to laugh at the people getting scammed. I admit I shake my head when I hear about people getting taken in, but I do understand that if done well, you just don't see that it's happening. Several years ago I came THATCLOSE to getting scammed. I was selling an armoire online (Craigslist), and I missed the red flags. I was actually in line at the bank to wire money to the guy when a person in another line told me it was a scam. I couldn't believe I'd been so dumb. As John said, the best solution right now is education. Warn people about it. As for the IVF/Comstock story, so maddening. Repubs are scrambling. "Yes to babies! ... No IVF, no babies? Uh..." The see-thru baseball pants are ridiculous. I guess MLB was trying to save money. Will they get new pants? (I'm reminded of the punchline to a joke: "Get me my brown pants!")
  6. Main topic: Pig Butchering Also: Book burning; Comstock Act; thin baseball pants Original air date: 2024.02.25
  7. They were definitely fake. There several differences betw Trump's sneakers and SNL's.
  8. I haven't watched The Floor either. Is the show basically what we saw in this sketch? I liked Bowen's guesses for milk, and Ego's guesses were pretty funny, too. That monologue was SO bad. Yikes. I know nothing about his regular standup act, but there's no way I'd even google it. Cold Open - Once again I thought this had potential, but the execution was off. I think there's too much pausing betw delivering lines. Sometimes that was appropriate, but I do think a faster pace in many of the sketches would be beneficial. Who was Mikey supposed to be? The only thing I liked in the church sketch was Ego. She's so much fun. Rock Bottom Kings was pretty good. I also liked the Trump shoes one and was surprised at how good Shane's impression was. Too bad they had to tack on an "old Biden" joke, though if they'd just stopped with the Biden shoe, it would have been good. I liked the HR meeting sketch and thought Shane was good here. I got a big laugh out of one of the women (Chloe?) saying to Kenan, "Eric! Cut your nails!" and him replying, "NO!" I can't say this ep was a disappointment because I wasn't expecting much. I also thought Michael did a pretty good Rob Lowe impression. There wasn't much in WU that I liked. There are countless jokes you can make about that embryos-are-children court decision, and I did like the one about Alabama now trying black embryos as adults. I liked Bowen's Capote bit, too. Yes, he often seems to be doing the same basic character, but since I find his persona funny, I liked this, esp his repeated comments about the women's hats. The Forrest Gump sketch was ok. Did not like the Fugliana sex doll sketch. I assume Sarah wrote this. I watched the ep on Peacock this morning, and the very beginning of the last sketch seemed to be cut off. No idea what this was about, though I admit I was playing a game on my phone while this was on.
  9. I know! If the show just HAD to kill her, then they could have done a slow motion shot where she's running, even looking at Will, but then she gets blown up. It was stupid for her to stop. I almost always have CC on for every show. I probably got into the habit when watching British shows, but even with American ones, either the actors talk very fast or they mumble.
  10. Yeah, until reading here about Navarro's possible suicide, I didn't think about it. That last scene, I thought they were just chillin' together. Right now, I could go either way. I'd have to rewatch the ending to get to any more definitive impression, and I'm not interested in doing that.
  11. Early 80's. He smoked regular weed. 🤷‍♀️
  12. That was good. I've never watched the show before. The TSA comedy that Quinta and ... was it Larry Wilmore? ... are working on? Anyway, that is a great idea.
  13. Would one joint still be in your system the next day? Long ago I dated a math teacher who smoked weed every night. I don't think it affected his teaching. He seemed fine in the morning.
  14. I believe she said she smoked every night.
  15. Mike O'Malley! Love him. Seems pretty clear he'll be back. Yeah, I immediately thought of Gina. Ugh. I didn't find Jessca funny. I actually think a different actress could have made her funnier. Anyway, hope it's a one and done. What did it mean when Jessca said, "This week has been exceptionably mid." What is mid? Midling? I loved when Ava sarcastically said, "Gee willikers! I have nothing helpful to say, so I guess I'll just restate the problem that we're all aware of." That was so true. Ava: Attention, Abbott Elementarians… Barbara: Spill the peas.
  16. Review: True Detective Ruined Its Entire Season in One Last Scene. I thought this was a pretty good review. It put into words some problems I had with the finale. BTW, if you have trouble accessing the review, try opening it in a Private Window.
  17. What? WHAT? Why? That's not even funny. An epic takedown. Loved it. I don't think there was really anything new that I didn't read about, but it was good to have my memory refreshed and to see video that I hadn't seen. The SC Justices (or at least some of them) seem to think that they are impervious to influence. Even if they're given $1 million a month from the billionaires, their impartiality is a given. Yes, it's also the appearance of impropriety that's at issue, but I think some of the justices believe their minds are so great, their souls so pure, that they cannot be influenced by any nefarious means. But as John said, "... 15 years of marinating in right-wing money and vacationing with businessmen who could massively profit from [court decisions]" can affect one's opinion and actions. There's no way that these exclusive trips Thomas and Alito take never include discussions about business or culture or laws. What, they only talk about the food, how the fishing was, and woodworking? Policing yourself doesn't work. Checks and balances. Who checks the SC? Harlan Crow's collection of Nazi memorabilia is abhorrent. Loved John saying, "That is a bit of a red flag. Specifically, THIS red flag!" An easy joke, but one I liked, was about the painting signature, that it was "A Hitler, and not THE Hitler." No way will Thomas accept John's offer, but I bet it will be tempting.
  18. I didn't get that impression at all. I think she just knows, from life experience, that traumatic events stay with you for the rest of your life. You have to deal with it even after you, e.g., put the body in the icy sea. Uhhhh. Good point. I don't think there's any way to completely dismiss all of the supernatural occurrences in the season, but I'm not sure this particular part was necessarily supernatural. Clark was kind of loosing it. Or DID lose it. Playing a part in killing Annie, the woman he deeply loved, just destroyed him, broke him. When he said she was awake, that could have been his guilty mind speaking. I do wonder about the apparent seizure he had. I'm not sure if such a thing can be caused by psychological events or trauma. One thing I liked in this ep was when Navarro was seeing him during that moment but from a different angle than what we had seen. It didn't give us any more insight, but I thought it was interesting.
  19. Quoting myself to say that I read an interview (posted in the Media thread) with Issa Lopez where she offers one possible explanation: The scientists killed Annie and called the mine to clean it up. Hank was sent. He dumps Annie's body where protests have been in order to make it look like it was connected. He abuses the body, kicking it and cutting out the tongue, to continue with that ruse. The women of the village find the tongue and keep it as an act of reverence, keeping it in a freezer. When they come to Tsalal to get the scientists, "they leave the tongue as a sign that now is the time of the truth of storytelling." I accept this answer.
  20. Girl power! Can't say I'm all that satisfied with this season. There were some things I really liked. Jodie Foster for one. I wouldn't begrudge her an Emmy. I did appreciate that the murder mysteries were answered. That's something. I was getting worried that Rose was going to end up being responsible for someone's death. Whew! I did read that he said Hank had cut out Annie's tongue, but not that he put it under the table at the research center. Maybe I missed that part of the interview. Anyway, as others said, when would he have put it there? Also, after cutting out her tongue, what did he do with it for all that time? He must have frozen it, but why would he even keep it? I don't know if these questions can be adequately answered. Yeah, I really hated when he said that. That was very nice symmetry. Didn't the video on Annie's phone show her in the ice caves and then being attacked? But we saw her being attacked and killed in the lab. What don't I get? In the FB of Navarro shooting Wheeler, we hear a baby cry. Is it possible that Danvers adopted the baby, and this is Holden? Doesn't seem like it, and yet what was the point of hearing the baby cry? Also, what kind of rinky-dink police department does Ennis have when they don't do ballistics tests on the gun that Wheeler died by? In FBs, did we see Holden playing peek-a-boo with Danvers? If so, is that why Navarro covered one of Danvers' eyes when she said Holden said he sees her? I know we saw the stuffed polar bear and the 'real' one missing an eye, but I don't get the meaning of this all. When Danvers is laying down, she pulls a cross necklace out of her hair and tosses it away. (I assume it got caught up in her hair when she fell thru the ice in the cave.) In an earlier ep we see Navarro find a cross necklace in her car and throw it out the window. What does this mean to you all? That, at least in those moments, neither Navarro nor Danvers believes in God? They are not spiritual until the end of the show? Stupid character decisions: - Not taking a rope with you when you go into an ice cave. - Navarro forcing Clark to listen to the sounds of Annie screaming as she was being killed. Granted, I know Navarro was in a bad place, blah blah blah. But I disliked this quite a lot.
  21. I wouldn't be surprised if Roy had fingerprinted her when they were married.
  22. I was never a Gina Linetti fan, but I do like Ava. IRL, I would not, but as a character who does selfish and self-serving things, I find her funny. Great lines, great performance. I'll add that I got into the show a bit late. It had already been on for a bit before I turned on S1 E1 on Hulu. I was into the second ep when I decided I didn't want to watch the struggles and problems of public schools. Then I decided to focus on the positive and funny parts of the show. Worked for me!
  23. Da'Vine Joy Randolph just won a BAFTA for her performance in The Holdovers. Her acceptance speech made me cry. Very happy for her.
  24. I can't remember... Had Sazz just gotten back from LA? Maybe that's one reason they'd be going there. (I know that Loretta has a new job there.)
