  1. Is that the guy who does scripts for films and John Boy gets a chance to replace him but stands on his moral high ground?
  2. “Mama, Grams, I’m off to the Charlie’s Angels audition, wish me luck!” ”Well I don’t know what you’re talking about Erin but Angels is Biblical so it can’t be half bad. Have fun, but not too much fun!”
  3. Even though it's the older version of Henry that she's obsessed and fell in love with. I'm not too sure if this story does a lot of service to promote women as rational thinkers...
  4. I only lasted 4 eps of this reboot, I was keen to begin with but it was just so poorly done. Nothing really made much sense and it lacked that "Twilight Zone" irony. In particular I think they really sacrificed the opportunity for irony in Ep3 "Replay". I thought the cop became suspicious by her behavior, trying to buy him a slice of pie etc. Everything she was doing just made her look more guilty to the cop. Instead they went the SJW route, ho hum..
  5. Been re-watching the series and still enjoying it. There was a topic on Jo Martinez on the former show thread here. I do like that they haven't made her a cop by day and bimbo by night character. She doesn't have any quirky interests or active dating/love life. She is obviously interested in the main character but doesn't go all gooey eyed either.
  6. John Snr really did just want to be left alone. I loved it when John Boy would get all pretentious (which was often) with his talk about European wars and Hitler and other lofty issues and concerns and John Snr would just sit and nod. Not that he didn't understand what John Boy was on about, he just didn't care for it and figured JB would shut up sooner if he didn't encourage him too much. I felt for John Snr he is trying to run the family mill and one son wants to be a writer and the other wants to play music. I'd be laying down the law "Under my roof, you work my mill!"
  7. He is seriously cheesy. I don't understand why anyone likes him and he doesn't come off as a lawyer either. Although if he has money that might be the only reason Charisse is with him. I was really keen to watch this show as well but I am finding it meanders too much. I think it should be a little tighter story wise. Rose seems to be polarizing as Claire. I'm not a fan myself. I feel like they can't decide if this is meant to be funny or serious, dark or romantic etc. Yeah I was starting to wonder too as I thought it was a mini series but them it seemed to not really be headed anywhere. They spent a lot of time replaying events and showing how many Henry's they could throw in a time period. I just wonder how many seasons they really hope to squeeze out of this concept. I don't think it is suited to a long run.
  8. I think the movie worked well. It suits a contained and focused plot/execution. To try and make it an ongoing series it will end up becoming increasingly silly. I am finding Rose Leslie to be a bit harsh in regards to being a romantic lead. Theo is doing fine with his role. I feel the comedic moments they throw in at times to be jarring, Gomez turning up to save the day for example. Even if he did that, I think the Bikers at the least would follow them home. The scene where the two Theo's engage in oral sex. The stupid amount of Henry's running around in time and yet at other times there appears to only be one or two. Yet he can't control what he does but it seems he has some control etc. If it gets a second season it will be interesting to see what they can do with it.
  9. I can't see it being a satisfying ending. They have wasted so much time thus far and will rush to the end no doubt.
  10. I'm thinking Taylor Richardson who played the sister Alicia would have been a better Claire. She is more feminine, and soft, looks more vulnerable than the harsher looking and acting Rose Leslie. I guess they wanted a "name" for the role but I don't think Rose was the right choice. This ep was more fun although I still feel like their wasting time, I had the impression it was a mini series so expected it to be more focused but it is looking like what they hope will become a regular series. I could be wrong but I am still not seeing much meaningful progression. I'm not so sure the bikers would have cared about CCTV coverage and cameras tend not be as far away as what Gomez was suggesting. I think Bikers would know that as well. It seemed like a comical and somewhat naive rescue. It was funny watching Henry suffer foot in mouth disease around Claire's parents, her brother seems like a complete arsehole but he was funny.
  11. Whether it is or Rose or the way she is being told to play Claire comes across as very serious and I have trouble believing as some kind of doe eyed hopeless romantic. She is more sexually aggressive.
  12. They put a lot of shit on people from the past and education but they learned college level math and other subjects before the age of 12 most of the time! I know in Australia there is more focus on teaching Political Agenda's then actually educating.
  13. This is Eric playing one his characters "Poida" (Peter) the joke might be lost in translation but "Poida" is what we call a Bogan in Australia, or a Redneck to use American terminology, an uncultured person. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nl_6jABTmS0
  14. I was told it was a mini series but if so it does not seem near at all to a logical ending. The series doesn't seem to have focused story line as per a mini series, it seems to meander more so they probably hoping for a second and perhaps longer season.
  15. Aimee reminded me of Nellie from Little House. I remember she had the hots for one of the Walton boys but by the time the boy realized it she had moved on lol. Corabeth was quite attractive when she let her hair out, I recall the ep she did that and she had classic movie star looks. I think she could have found someone easily enough. Ike could have as well but perhaps not as attractive as Corabeth. I often felt Cora was putting on an act anyway. I think there was an ep with Aimee where she more or less admits to it, something about her conditioning when she was younger. I think she liked being a fancy fish in a small town. She may not have stood out somewhere more sophisticated.
  16. True she does act and look quite rough. I think back then it would have been worse. They may have had some experience with violence against Indians and Bandits but there was a lot of new technology in the Civil War. I recall watching the Ken Burns doco The Civil War and was surprised to see how articulate the soldiers were in their letters home. They seemed far more sensitive than we probably give them credit for.
  17. Not having read the book I quite enjoyed the film. I thought Rachel was a good choice, kind of innocent looking. I find Rose Leslie to be harsh looking for the role and I agree she does play Claire as smug. Someone like Tori Amos would have been great for the role, kind of old school, whimsical looking, Sarah Goldberg and Sarah Polley also would have been good. Zooey Deschanel would have worked too. In Australia Eric Bana was known for playing comedy characters on skit shows so it was surprising to see him get roles in big budget Hollywood films. Same with Rebel Wilson who was not very well known in Australia and also did skits on comedy shows. Eric seems to have shunned the limelight though whereas Rebel looks for it lol.
  18. Didn't they show that last ep? I feel like they are going to rush the ending in this show.
  19. Selling all her zipper dresses and high heels?
  20. When I watched the first ep I thought it was going to be a spoof on the concept as the interviews they do come across as comedic to me. I am not sure who, if anyone they are talking to either. They might just be doing a private video blog for the ages. I would imagine the stressful nature of time travel would have a huge impact on Henry's body and appearance. Hitting the ground naked and then having to run or fight your way to safety would not be pleasant. I didn't pick up Henry 41 looking at Gretchen nostalgically either. She was trashy, reminded me of Courtney Love but better looking than Claire. I think they are missing some real comic relief, Henry appearing in or just before an art class as the model or on stage as a male stripper for example. Give the guy a break and allow him the odd time where his nakedness is acceptable! I was surprised young Henry backed off when challenged by Gomez. Henry could have whipped him easily, really bad casting choice in Gomez in my opinion. He doesn't look the type to stand up to someone or able to land Charisse. 2 eps to go if I am correct and I am feeling like they might rush it to the finish line.
  21. It's a common thing in TV shows and movies where characters have far more than their means should allow. I also figure though that the Walton's have been there a long time so it is accumulated wealth over many generations. They are probably using goods that were bought or made by previous generations so they would be saving a lot. We struggling through the eyes of others. The family who were pushed off their land who made an armed resistance against the authorities. The odd drifters who passed by, the book salesman who conned the gullible mother and John Boy into buying the book series that would never arrive. Books would be an unnecessary luxury! The look on John Snr's face! They aren't a typical struggling depression era family that is for sure. It was a very weird ep. And after that you just allow the guy to stay free? I would be thinking he could snap again at any moment! LOL Burning down the house due to smoking a pretentious pipe, letting Grandpa take the blame, selling the family plot of land to buy an old printing press which he barely used before running off and leaving it to Jim Bob or Whatever Bob to maintain so it didn't rust. What a guy! It was a cliche simple ending too. He gives up on it when John Boy goes missing. Hmmmm Maybe he cooled down or realized the Walton family outgunned his? It could have become a real Hatfield McCoy thing! I recall it did get to the point of John Snr getting his rifle out and confronting him unless I am getting stories mixed up. The guy did take a shot at one of the Walton boys too. I did some quick Googling on Hamner and I didn't find anything about him having gone missing in WW2 so I think that was just added for the sake of storyline. Watching the show growing up I had no idea it was the "real" John Boy narrating the show!
  22. The romantic idea of someone being the first and the last is powerful. Of course it is all by chance and choice. Claire could have just waited till meeting 22 yo Henry, it was after all only 2 years away*. Then again it is painful waiting and she figured 18 was like a benchmark age where older Henry should no longer feel any guilt about having sex with her. She was ready to go at 16! There is also the very strange time travel thing which would be enough to send anyone around the bend. I think being with someone like that would have to come with an "open marriage" factor. Even if the extra (and I am thinking this is more for the non time traveler) is more an emotional affair than physical. I get the impression Claire uses sex as a coping mechanism which is why she sleeps with G&C, it's a form of distraction. Which is also fair enough. *I'm not on either extreme of the topic. I can see how in your example having to wait 20 years to meet your match is too long to wait around without experiencing anyone else.
  23. Perhaps it's a matter of perspective. It may seem ethical or morally correct to want that person to experience others and then settle down with yourself. But at the same time, experiencing others brings about pain and possible actual harm whether it be directly or otherwise. It can also lead to causing harm to others as we see with the confused Claire sleeping with attached Gomez and Charisse. Although the fact that G & C cheat on each other speaks volumes. And yes, she was raped so she knows who she wants. She doesn't feel a need to go out and be with others. That is a strength in my book rather than a weakness that needs to be corrected. Even before being raped she knew who she wanted to be with. Not many people get that gift. I don't think Henry has to be encouraging one way or the other. He just has to reassure her it will happen. He has the benefit of time travel so she knows she can believe him.
  24. Thanks for that. It does make sense. It's a glimpse into a very different life and culture. The Walton's, despite always crying poor were very well off for their time and social group. For a start they live on a mountain named after them but also have a business which always seems to be working even though they don't maintain that saw! I would imagine during the depression things like a wireless set if they had one at all would have been sold when things got tough. So the fact they are listening to it on their own in their double story house says a lot. Same here. I was expecting more battle scenes and just more of their experiences overall but there was little of it. And what we did see was badly done. Same here. I think having to choose the boys who went to war was a huge weight on John Snr but I also wonder how the other townsfolk saw the Waltons afterward. They lost sons and all the Walton boys came back. People are in despair and they get angry at things like that. Start feeling resentment etc. Way too heavy by that point of the show to get into. They could have done a spin off series just on John Boy, I think it would have been interesting but perhaps it wouldn't have lasted too long. I would have liked to see more of John Boy developing his career and experiencing the big smoke etc I think Richard Thomas thought he was going to be a big star and wanted something different, which I understand but it never really happened for him. By the last couple of seasons all the big guns of the show are gone and you just have the supporting cast left and they aren't very interesting or as yourself and others have said, good actors. Thanks for that. I guess it was all a view into another life and world. So much different to their own. I never even considered what time of the year it was! The Walton's did some things well and some things not so well. As the seasons went on their track record was more "Not so well". I didn't like him either but Mary Ellen was also rather harsh looking at times and walked like a Wharfie. In real life the original actor who played Curt was 20 years older than Judy Norton but I think within the show he was supposed to be more age appropriate by our definitions. For the period I don't think anyone would have thought anything of a 40 year old man, especially a Dr marrying a 19 year old woman.
  25. And when the boys come back from war there isn't any PTSD or changes in them. I don't think they really mention it which probably would have been normal. They did slightly explore the theme of PTSD through the other vet who beats his wife and the Walton boys are like white knights. Sometimes the emotion or background was missing though. There was the ep where King George V of England is abdicating and the family sit around listening on the radio looking very shocked. I would have liked to know if that was really how it was back then. I wanted to know how a King in England affects some Hillbillies in America or anyone in America. That would have been interesting to see more of. John Boy watching the Hindenburg go down was the classic though, so obviously standing in front of the original footage and having some burning paper thrown at him afterwards!
