  1. The only women of the period that I know of who married or bred with Indians were captives, usually taken as children and adopted as part of the tribe. I don’t know of any who did so by choice. I agree the show is like a tacky romance novel. They even made a tornado romantic!
  2. I don't watch often are you meaning Marissa? I noticed in one of the last eps she was wearing a dress with a zipper running down the back. She is not as hot as we are meant to believe she is.
  3. True I can't help but wonder if that added to a ratings decline. All the talk about war, brothers going off to it and yet we see very little? Even MASH had the odd bit of combat moments. The 70's wouldn't have been a good time to show war though I agree. All the boys seemed very unaffected by their war experiences as well. It was like nothing happened. JimBob signed up late and lots of men never made it overseas but stationed so close to home? Convenient. They did rush through the war. It didn't seem worth to have so many brothers go off and yet not show more of it. I guess by that stage the show was in it's death throes anyway. Some of those kids weren't great when they were on the show. Judy Norton would have to be one of the worst. I'm surprised Kami Cotler didn't much afterwards. She was cute as she got older and when she styled her hair differently. Mary Beth had an All American girl next door look about her and it's also surprising she didn't go onto be a little more successful.
  4. The Comanche were the most brutal and hated and feared tribe even by other Native Tribes. This continuing ideal that Native American's were the salt of the Earth who wouldn't hurt a fly has gotten old. They were just as violent and aggressive as any other race on the planet. Also that sleeveless number Elsa wears is soo non Native. The colours so bright and fake. Just like her.
  5. I think vocally he sounded pretty similar to Richard Thomas which helped. Acting wise he was more restrained which I think was a good thing. By the time he comes back John Boy would be a different person (pardon pun) he has experienced things and would no longer be the same over enthusiastic kid he once was. Is it just me, despite the way John Boy goes on about his writing, I never really believed he was into it. I know he goes to great lengths to pursue it but I just never "felt it". I finished the seasons, haven't gotten to the reunions yet. It was hard going at times, I could really see the show was losing itself. By the final season it looked very late 70's/early 80's the way the women were dressing in particular and their hairstyles. Watching Grandma after the stroke was difficult, knowing the actress wasn't acting. Feeling a mix of admiration for her courage as well as sadness for what had happened to her. Both actors who played the parents leaving also left a huge gap. And of course Grandpa who left because the actor who played him died. In regards to special effects, I guess that is why we never saw the war the boys went off to. And after the Hidenburg ep they weren't going to show Mary Ellen's husband looking at black and white footage of Pearl Harbor on a huge screen!
  6. Lol that’s part of the reason I won’t watch it! It feels like a desperate tax write off instead of a genuine creative project. 6666 as a ranch has none of the charm of Yellowstone. @blackwing that would explain why Jimmy was chosen to spearhead the 6666 crossover. As an actor he seems capable enough but the character is nothing special. then again maybe Sheridan wants it to fail quickly?!
  7. I might check in for S2 after all (edit: just read no S2), although I have a feeling Elsa will plague us throughout as some kind of Angel that no one will ever live up to. I did some reading on the Oregon trail and by 1883 there should have been some rail so I am confused as to why they are making the trek by wagon. It was still a decent series but Sheridan needs to take his hand off it when writing female characters, they all seem to be hot headed super women with him. Although I haven't watched anything else he has done asides from Yellowstone which has modern Elsa in the form of Beth. And if it were my loved one I would be taken her to the fort doctor. You just let her die, no fight, no trying?!
  8. Yep! Desperate ratings grab. It's like the show was losing it's identity or thought it needed a new one. The ep with the odd artist guy who was stalking Erin was one of the cheesiest, weird camera angles not sure if it wanted to be pyscho or a film noir before realizing it needed a family friendly Walton's ending.
  9. Yeah they have made Bull too perfect and he is just bland. No weird hobbies, no odd collections etc No flaws. He just works and that is it. DiNozzo was a skirt chaser and movie lover as well as having great chemistry with his co stars. He was also an unlikely cop. I believe Bull as a lawyer he just isn't interesting - they've made it too realistic in some ways.
  10. There is a detachment in her tone when she speaks of what she is experiencing or she is trying very hard to sound poetic. Her mother tells her that this is the most freedom she would ever experience. I would imagine in that respect they would not want to rush the journey too much as the adults know what awaits them is responsibility and rules. I feel we are supposed to look to the Dutton's as the main characters but it is odd given Shea steals the show. Perhaps if Sheridan is watching for public opinion he might realize that there are "Break Out" characters in this show that deserve more attention than Elsa in particular and even the Dutton themselves. Maybe not feminist but definitely pulp romance novel aimed at young adults.
  11. Season 7 takes on a very Soapie vibe, the camera angles and style. The way they are acting and some of the really cheesy and silly story lines. Interesting watching these old shows decades later. Obviously ratings are dropping and some of the actors were hoping to be the new star as well as create opportunities elsewhere. Both of the oldest daughters modernize their hairstyles which is also telling. The show doesn't have that old town feel as much anymore. It would seem Mary Beth McDonugh saw herself as a sex symbol or was trying to establish herself as one.
  12. It depends which ep you’re up to. I don’t want to risk spoiling anything for you. Glad you liked my term Rodeo Barbie.
  13. I didn't expect her to die with him but appearances back then we're everything. Go on with your life but perhaps not flirt with the next cowboy who comes along and then sleep with an Indian you just met? They took it to the other extreme. It is slow which I understand but they seem to stop a lot. I would imagine daytime would be a near non stop trek only stopping for meal breaks and night would be to rest. And yes, she did get over Ennis very quickly it cheapens her character even more. I think every man she fancies will be the love of her life.
  14. I know some of the humour comes from Reacher just hitting people but I kept thinking if someone like him would want to maintain a lower profile? Assuming Reacher is going to go place to place fighting bad guys wouldn't the story of "The huge guy who comes in beating people up" be all over the internet in seconds? So although it is part of his character it also seemed out of character to me, if that makes sense?
  15. I know! There was one ep where Jason I think it was went into town and replaced a bunch of old papers with the Chronicle. If what he replaced were old Chronicles than not many were interested! I always got the impression everyone was humoring ol John Boy! Yeah he left them a pile of junk and with 10 acres less land. I am amazed they forgave him as easily and quickly as they did for selling that land. I guess the family could sell the press as scrap metal. His writing always seemed like more of a hobby to me than something serious. Just the way he came across. So it sounds like it looks nothing like the perfect beach we saw in that ep!
  16. 100% agree. Surely people back then weren't all that different to people now. How long can you keep pushing yourself if there is no hope, no light moments? At what cost do you just keep pushing forward? To me the immigrants seem very ill prepared which leads me to think that they just aren't tough enough to keep pushing on the way they do. Any happiness appears to be reserved for Elsa which makes me dislike her even more. She is spoiled brat playing at being whatever she feels like at the moment. I'd like to see the same things you do but yes Elsa does just ruin it. We just know it will be romance after romance and her performing the incredible against great odds. Makes you wonder why she just doesn't lead the wagon train.
  17. He would have been. As soon as John Boy started looking like he had some promise he left home lol. I just always saw that kind of family as all working in the family business which the father seems to have trouble running on his own. Just not my perception of how those families worked but that is just my perception and I realize that The Walton's was created by "John Boy" Earl Hamner, and also it would be a dull show if all the sons just worked at the lumber mill all day.
  18. Jim Bob was the mechanical one. He seemed to fit his father's image more than the other older sons. Jason's goals to become a musician was fine but I wonder how practical that really was in their area. Seems to me if he was really serious about that he would have left for some place like Nashville or a bigger city where he could have really explored that. It was like he was leaving at home not really helping yet still wanting to become a musician. John Boy was that way too. When he was offered the job for the Hollywood guy he turned it down due to his lofty morals. Seemed silly to me given their money issues and the opportunity itself.
  19. I don't understand either, one moment she is this dreamy young woman waxing lyrical about her experiences while sitting in a field and the next she is shooting it out with the bad guys. Then she goes back to wanting to be some kind of prim and proper woman again except she doesn't want to wear a dress. I wonder if Sheridan is actually writing her as a satire of the modern woman who doesn't really know who she is but wants to be everything anyway? Feminist or not to be so open sexually at that time, especially with parents and others fully aware and even in view is a huge thing to do even now. Then to also do the same with an Indian? I don't think so. I am really wondering who the target audience for this show is. Elsa is obviously aimed at the younger woman who thinks she can do anything at all but I feel she is a bit of a joke for most people who are older and know that life just isn't that easy. I feel Faith Hill is doing fine in the role much better than Isabel May who doesn't even sound like her parents. I find Shea and Thomas to be more interesting characters overall. Even some of the immigrants could do with some back story added. The Gypsy woman and the leader of the Immigrant group. It would be good to see some flashback scenes of Europe and how they come to leave.
  20. Thanks I never would have picked up on that. The beach house looked so Californian 50’s/60’s that it made me think Gidget was going to turn up! I started thinking they were in California which of course is where the show was filmed. Speaking of budgets, the Waltons are always crying poor yet seem to have money to do what they want. Both parents are great at giving up jobs that pay well (for the time) and the sons mostly have rather lofty ambitions for work. Asides from the one who is good mechanically. Erin did well out of not giving it up for poor GW, an acre of land isn’t bad. Still can’t believe John Boy sold 10 acres to buy a printing press which is now rusting in his work room. Continuity isn’t great in this show as I am sure later that season he comments that he is still paying it off?!
  21. I had to laugh at Elsa’s speech about the dress squashing her womanhood. That dress showed her curves and bust more than the rather dubious Native American sleeveless top and pants with chaps. For once Elsa actually looked feminine. and the tribe allowed her to live even after she kills two of their warriors? And this tribe speak the same language as the Comanche? Not to mention they readily believe she is married to a Comanche brave? We are seeing a lot of 2022 race relations and attitudes in this show. I couldn’t understand the point of the men going off to kill the group who massacred the village either. They sure do love the full frontal assault too, heavily outnumbered and yet come out of it 9 a scratch. That sure was a good thing to do, wouldn’t want the NA’s thinking your group killed their women and children! As if they would know or care to stop and ask anyway. I think James is writing Elsa off a little too quickly. She probably will die but to write her off before she even shows signs of illness? I think I would still want to take her to a doctor. Understandable an operation back then would be dangerous but some meds wouldn’t be a bad idea. I wonder if Shea and Thomas will end up staying on with James and become the first branded men on the Yellowstone ranch. I agree with @mythoughtis there isn’t anything about Elsa that suggests she should be a pioneer/warrior woman. Margaret seems more capable of that than Elsa. I think Sheridan is just fantasising as per usual.
  22. Up Season 6 now. Although it is refreshing without John Boy, it is showing the first serious signs of Shark Jumping. The Seashore ep where they go to the beach house. That house looked far too modern for the times and the woman they meet there just didn't seem to fit. I thought I would like the WW2 era eps but so far the show is starting to weaken.
  23. Nope not just you. I cannot stand her, she makes what is otherwise a reasonably serious and realistic show into an absolute joke. In fact the only thing that would make me watch Season 2 would be knowing she won't be in it! When she rode out in that Native sleeveless number I swear I got flashbacks of Deanery's from GOT. Is she meant to be some kind of saviour now? Does Taylor Sheridan realize that Deanery's was a terrible leader?! I think it could go either way. He was either building her up so we would really miss her (ha, ha) if she died or she was just supposed to be so important to everyone that she would live a mark on them for all eternity. I will ride out this season but I am not sure about season 2.
  24. Is that she is looking a lot healthier of late? I just googled, yes she would have been pregnant during filming. https://people.com/parents/jessica-pare-welcomes-son-blues-anthony/ I don't pay full attention to the show anymore as it is just a mess. I got a little confused over that as it was ridiculous. Did they fly out to Mexico for this therapy mid mission? No, they actually took some time to find the very dubious therapist and drop acid! Jason, who is skeptical about anything other than American beer and the SEAL's is dropping acid? Sorry, too much for me to believe.
  25. They are moving very slowly. They seem to stop a lot, I figured they would be moving constantly during the day and only stop at night. Asides from allowing Elsa a chance for romance and heroics there seems little reason for their stopping most of the time too. As far as I can tell her marriage to Sam wouldn't even be legal by American standards so she could easily forget him by the time she reaches the next town and meets the next guy. I find it hard to believe they will stop at Sam for her. I don't think I can stomach a Season 2 but will stick it out for this season. There were female cowgirls, Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane to name two and women were tough back then, probably much tougher than they are now. My problem with Elsa is she just doesn't look the part. She is so skinny and weak looking. Then you have the dramatics and over the top emotions. We are talking about a time when women weren't taken seriously and she gives them little reason to take her seriously! I would be back handing her myself on a half hour basis! And yes, the way she acts, the way she dresses especially now in that colourful Indian garment that not even the Indian women are wearing. She would stand out far too much. In reality her parents would probably cover her hair or cut it short, muddy up her face a little! You would not want her riding around like some kind Princess.
