  1. Yeah, he very likely thought only those who were wealthy would get hit like the Tesla investor. The notion that reparations would create privilege, to me, is too simplistic. It won't change whatever biases that other people may have about Black people, it would likely make people double-down on their biases. The fact that Marshall's coworker remarked how lucky their Black coworkers were to not have to worry about reparations, just showed the blind spot she and many have. The reparations were born out of the subjugation of their ancestors; people enslaved, families ripped away from each other, maimed, raped, killed, history lost, but they're supposed to be lucky because they get some money. The money is not the point; not everyone's reparations came with money attached - example: Marshall's coworker who had to wear a shirt that read "I Owned Slaves"). I think the writers just wanted to examine what would be the after-effects if American Descendants of Slaves (ADOS) did get reparations; what would that look like. The problem with inserting the cast in this in any other way beyond them dreaming that this happened would mean that we are to treat this as if it has really happened in their world. But as invisible cars exists in their world, why not reparations? He was very pleased. Then life caught up with him.
  2. The Big Paybeck is a spiritual cousin to The Chappelle Show's reparations skit, but much, much, much darker. The funniest thing to me is that when President Obama was elected there were whingers who really believed he would enact reparations like this. I wish there was more of a connective tissue to the ensemble to this episode (like how we at least see Earn awaken at the end of "Three Slaps"), if they wan to do anthology eps making this TALES OF ATLANTA, they should at least do it penultimate episode of the season. Interesting that E - the ill-fated man in the hotel lobby - was the same man in the boat in "Three Slaps". Maybe he's the specter of race relations. Marshall telling his wife, "She was white the other day" is particularly funny because in her texts to him the day before she used the white thumbs up emoji and the next day a brown hand emoji.
  3. Yes. There is a new interview with Knight that was posted today where he talks about what the film will focus on.
  4. I've watched PEAKY BLINDERS since the beginning and I've always felt - outside of S1 - that each season only really 3 great episodes and the other episodes are filler (albeit well written and well-acted filler) working to the penultimate and final episodes of the season. This season was no different. I guess people who were disappointed felt that the long wait coupled with it being the final season should mean that all eps would fire on all cylinders. To me, it was par for the course. Strong opener and bang-up second to last and final episode.
  5. Van was already in an existential crisis when she came to Amsterdam because she didn't get the job she wanted. I think that and seeing the assisted death and realizing life is fleeting she's relinquishing all social conventions. Of the group she was the responsible one. Now she's just indulging her every whim. Loved the 21 Savage line and the entire Paper Boi v. Fernando saga.
  6. I didn't take the tour manager beating up that guy as he's taking out his aggression on a rando, but playing into the notion that people think all Black people look alike. The guy in blackface was wearing the same jacket as Earn so the manager really thought he caught up to Earn and was beating him up. Which ties into the touches of Zwarte Piet throughout the episode and how people were trying to explain to Earn and Paperboi that it wasn't racist, but meanwhile there was a racist undercurrent like the manager mistaken a man in blackface for Earn and the two women with Paper Boi fighting over Rihanna being referred to a n*gga b*tch (which is real. A Dutch magazine thought they were praising her by calling her the "ultimate n*gga b*tch years ago).
  7. I'm getting the Van/Darius vibe too. Opening with the story of Lake Lanier, using various viral moments and tying it all up with the excruciating tragedy of the Hart kids (because f*ck those women) was inspired. I didn't know if it would be possible to inject humor into that story but they did (Loquareeous' seeking safety with the cop turning into a "free(dom) hugs" caption.). I saw the resolution of Earn and the promoter storyline coming a mile away but it didn't make it any less funny.
  8. Renewed for series two.https://mobile.twitter.com/bbcpress/status/1506059956872781827
  9. Unless the PEAKY BLINDERS film Steven Knight is so gung-ho to make is a prequel, Tommy is safe.....until the film. 3 eps left. How is this all going to come together. Stephen Graham makes everything better.
  10. We get Hizdahr zo Loraq and Hodor. I was hoping to like it more than I do because it stars actors I really enjoy like Con O'Neill, Samson Kayo and Rory Kinnear but it's barely holding my interest.
  11. The BAFTAs have three Best Picture categories- a general one, International and British Film. BELFAST won the latter.
  12. Will Smith beat out Benedict Cumberbatch and Tony Kotspur beat Kodi Smit-McPhee at the BAFTAs. I feel this couls be the end of the road for them. Campion and the film, however, are fine.
  13. Geordie and Will are back solving crimes and catching the eyes of beautiful ladies (Will). Glad to see how they incorporated Leonard in this season as the events of last season signaled that his presence wasn't going to be a sure thing.
  14. It is the Batman: Earth One run. As for whether it's canon I am of the mind if it's written it's canon whether it's an alternate universe tale or part of Earth Prime. There's 80 plus years of Batman lore to pluck from.
  15. This is the only incarnation of Bruce and Selina's relationship/attraction that has made sense to me. It makes sense that this Bruce-who is extremely serious about justice and doing the "right" thing could have a blind spot for Selina who traffics in the very world he despises. He sees a kindred spirit and someone who he can share The Batman with.
  16. Surge pricing doesn't really help theater owners because the split on ticket sales is a sliding scale with the studio getting 90% in the first week and 10% to the theater. It reaches a 50/50 split in week five but how many people still care to see a film 5 weeks into its run? Especially now that the theatrical window has shrunk. People would rather wait for the film to hit streamers. But I am a fan of the movie going experience and paid a normal box office price to see THE BATMAN and loved every minute of it.
  17. Very fun and very twisty. Loved every second.
  18. Gina and Michael are perfect for each other - two twits who think they wield more power than they actually do. I don't mind if Tommy doesn't make it out alive this season (though as they are really adamant about doing a Peaky Blinders film I don't know how that will work out.) I am more worried about Arthur. It'll be too easy to have Tommy be the one to whip him back into shape. I want Ada to fulfill that duty
  19. Fantastic series. Ben is brilliant in it as always. Great supporting cast Ambika Mod, Michelle Austin and Alex Jennings. I wouldn't class it a comedy though -more of a dramedy.
  20. Conrad wanted to be in the trenches. It's why he switched with Archie. He didn't want the protection King George set up to offer him. Conrad didn't need a "heroic" death. So many soldiers die in banal ways. Conrad acted heroically in getting the info needed and helping a fellow soldier. His death was the catalyst Orlando needed to take an active part in stopping the villains plans.

    U.K. TV

A lot of riveting telly lately. A trio of Sheridan Smith mini-series: NO RETURN: About a family who is on holiday in Turkey when their teenage son (Louis Ashbourne-Serkis) is arrested for the sexual assault of another teenaged boy. It follows the family trying to find a way to get him released as they battle a legal system that is quite different than theirs. FOUR LIVES: Based on the true story of the Grindr Killer. It centers on the family/friends of four young men who are found dead in similar fashion and their journey in trying to get the incompetent police to listen to them. Stephen Merchant stars as the killer. THE TEACHER: Sheridan Smith stars as a comely teacher who is prone to over indulgence. After a blackout she's accused of having sex with one of her students. CHEATERS: An eighteen part series in 10-minute chunks which centers on a pair of travelers - one married, another in a long-term relationship (Susan Wokoma and Joshua McGuire) whose flight is delayed. The two have a one-night stand and when they return to London they discover they are neighbors. The show is about how they deal with their growing feelings for each other and their partners(Callie Cooke and Jack Fox). THE TOURIST: An Australian mini that aired on the BBC and will air on HBO Max in March, starring Jamie Dornan as an amnesiac in Australia trying to uncover is identity with Danielle Macdonald as the rookie cop investigating his accident but is compelled to help him solve who he is. It did excellent in the ratings. I loved it. Excellent turn by Dornan. THIS IS GOING TO HURT: Incredible series with Ben Whishaw, based on the true story of doctor Adam Kay. It details his time as a doc in obstectricts/gynecology department. A VERY BRITISH SCANDAL: - The follow-up to A VERY ENGLISH SCANDAL. This time with the focus on the marriage and subsequent scandalous divorce of Margaret and Ian Campbell (Claire Foy and Paul Bettany). Remarkable performance by both. Outstanding script.
  22. In the first or second episode when he was chatting up Harcourt Chris said he hadn't been with anyone in a very long time and clarified it with "with a woman". He didn't spend those four years in Belle Reve celibate. For his father to also bring up Chris having sex with men it means this wasn't Peacemaker just getting off with men because he didn't have female options while locked up; he likes both.
  23. Obviously, but I don't see the twinning that people were seeing. I never confused the two.
  24. My dream nominees happened- Jenny Beavan, Jonny Greenwood, Aunjanue Ellis and Ciarán Hinds. Though I would have loved for Ben Affleck and Jared Leto getting best Supporting nods, not surprised that didn't happen. But either one of them would be more deserving than J.K. Simmons. I thought BEING THE RICARDOS was clunky, but at least Bardem and Kidman had one great scene apiece. Simmons had nothing. First time all 10 Best Picture slots have been filled since 2010.
  25. Not by name but I assume Earl was the dog who took a poop on the field that Nate was kicking about in ep.3 "Trent Crimm, The Independent".
