  1. Is there supposed to be 2 threads for this episode? I'm a bit unsure what the unaired in us thing means.
  2. Holy Crap, that's Mark McKinney! I did not recognize him as Glenn at all, but now that I know, I can't stop seeing him as his kids in the hall characters.
  3. When they were talking to Adam, they definitely said that she was from Namibia. They said at the time that it was a hard name to say, and I thought "Whaaaat?" Na- Mi-Bi-A. How the hell is that hard to say. They didn't say she was from Africa, as far as I remember. And Africa still isn't a country, which they specifically asked for.
  4. Ok, if they only get one guess, how come when the woman today was asked what country Adam Levine's wife was from and she said "Africa", they let her try again? She said "Africa" 3 times. They told her Africa wasn't a country, say the name of a country. And then she took about 35 tries to say Namibia (Which really, they think its hard to say?) and they gave her the prize. Africa was wrong! One guess they keep saying, and they let her try again when she was wrong. I really don't know why it's bothering me so much, but it is.
  5. I just have to ask, "pain in the ass" and "dammit" are considered cursing? I never even noticed. Now if she ever drops the f-bomb on live TV I'm sure I'll perk up a bit, but the first 2 seem pretty tame to me.
  6. From what I remember of the area, there are a few town up there, off the top of my head, Winter Harbour, Holberg, Quatsino, Port Alice, Mahatta River, and one or two others. Yes there are a lot of clearings, or what look like clearings from a satellite. You have to remember that there has been logging going on for most of the last century there. Large portions of the island are on their second or third growth in some places. There are places near where I grew up that have 40 year old trees that have already been clear cut twice. They may have been an hour or so from a logging road or campsite, but what is considered a campsite on the North Island is pretty basic. There aren't many of what most people would consider a campsite. If you have a cleared flat space near the water, you have a campsite. Also being near a logging road is no guarantee that you are near people. They spiderweb through the area, and some of them are very old and don't really go anywhere. Just because it shows up on a satellite image doesn't mean it's used. Back to the towns as well, if they have 1000 people I'd be very surprised. I was in Mahatta River once, and it was slightly larger than my logging camp. Port McNeill is one of the larger towns, and it has about 2500 people, ( I had to look it up, there was about 1500 when I live there in '85) I don't have a problem with production stepping for certain stuff, as I was more interested in the "Alone" aspect of it.
  7. I don't see it as him "putting it out in public on social media" He is responding to a post by Josh's sister that basically says "forgive Josh, he's repented and god wants you to." He didn't call Anna names, say she was stupid or attack her in anyway. He did all that to Josh. He just put it out there that she and her children have a place to go if they need it, and he is willing to cover all the costs, or even come get them. He is putting it out there that she has choices on what to do. He also said she has chosen not to take him up on this. At no point did I get the feeling from him that he is calling her out over anything. The only reason it is showing up publicly is that Josh's sisters' page is public, not him.
  8. It took me a few days to post because I'm sad. I'm more bummed than I thought I would be about not seeing this on a weekly basis for the next while. Alan was the one I was hoping would win, so I'm glad for that, but that one shot when it had stopped raining and everything was so green made me incredibly homesick. I did love the extra stuff from the beginning though, especially the " I cannot work in zees conditions! I am an artiste!" or some such.
  9. Ana Gastayer is awesome and should have her own talk show! The only other thing I have to say is that usually Howie Mandel really bothers me, but he wasn't so bad today. All in all a pretty entertaining show.
  10. I was always told that the bears hibernate in the winter, as do most of the small animals. Cougars are cats, and as such spend a lot of their time in the winter holed up in their dens. When it is cold and damp it takes a lot of energy to hunt stuff to eat, and they are better served to just stay home and sleep. If they've managed to eat enough during the fall, they can live for quite a while between meals. Much like the 4 guys that were left, stay in bed, don't do anything, preserve your energy. There aren't really a lot of squirrels on the north end of the island, just some small chipmunky types, that aren't chipmunks. It amazed me how noisy the woods up in Quesnel are, with the squirrels and all chirping and squeaking at you constantly. The Island woods are relatively quiet. There are weasels, martens, otters, rats, muskrats and racoons though. I have never seen a rabbit on the north end, just down south around Victoria. And they are from escaped or abandoned pets, not native to the island. There are a lot of mallards, grouse and birdlife around as well that are quite tasty. I can't really say how true this is, its just what my parents told me growing up, and as I never got eaten out in the bush, I tend to believe it.
  11. Nope, I get huge blisters and toe cramps from trying to keep them on my feet.
  12. Unforunately, it doesn't really get cold enough to freeze constantly. A couple of days here, a couple of days there, but generally it fluctuates enough that you don't get a frost line at all. You could dig a larder pit and keep stuff cool and out of the way, but it won't really freeze. Black bears do hibernate, but the cougars and the wolves don't. Also racoons are everywhere as well, and they are crafty little things, and will probably get into it.
  13. Generally, the temperature is relatively mild in winter. The problem is the dampness. 20 F is about -7 C, which shouldn't be much of a problem, but it eats into your entire body when everything is damp. I can go out in -20 C for a bit in a sweater up in Quesnel, because the air is dryer and nothing is damp, but wrap up in layers and layers down here at home when it gets close to freezing because it just eats through you. It's so hard to dress for the weather in winter because, like on the show, it can start out really cold, and by midday, everything has melted and it's fairly warm when the sun is up. I've mowed my lawn in February some years, even though the days start off really cold.
  14. I loved Lucas' yurt, but I don't understand why no one is insulating their shelters with branches. They have entire days with nothing to do, go out, gather cedar branches (They're everywhere) and pile them around your shelter. They would also provide noise dampening on that tarp roof of Lucas'. I don't mind the patter of rain through branches, or on a tin roof, but the constant slushy rain hitting a tarp would make me batty. This show is really making me miss the rain. My husband is from the Cariboo, where it is generally sunny for the most part, and he thinks the constant rain would make him crazy, but I love me some thunder storms. Even though I'm still on the west coast, it doesn't rain as much in the lower mainland. Oh, forgot to say, I noticed that one of them, don't remember which, was making spruce tea. Finally.
  15. Damn it, I'm in Quesnel visiting my husband's family and forgot that my brother in law doesn't have any sort of cable TV (I Know!!!) Just Netflix. And his internet is so bad I won't even try to watch it online. Thank God for PVRs. I guess I'll watch it Monday night when I get home. Something to look forward to!
  16. One thing I haven't seen any of the guys do is make spruce tea. You can boil up the needles and the green inner bark for tea. It's a good source of vitamin c, and smells nice. Tastes like tree of course, but it is a nice change of pace from just plain water. Also, it warms you up from the inside.
  17. I just started watching last nights show and have a question. Was that Simon Pegg playing Ron Weasley? That was a fairly funny bit. ETA: He just said Simon Pegg is on tonight's show, so I guess it was.
  18. I've just started watching the 3rd one, and I have to say, Jordan looks mighty sexy with a white beard and hair. It really suits him. When he gets old for real, Silver Fox will really apply.
  19. The only routine I watched all the way through was the robot dance. I no longer watch the intros or the critiques, so these 2 hour shows just whizz by. Most of the dances this week were boring or bad, so I don't really know how to feel about this season. as for the guys up for elimination, I tended to like Edson more than Moises, so I was happy he stayed, and I didn't understand why Asaf stayed over Burim. At least Burim actually looked like he was dancing in his routine. Asaf looked like Joey Tribiani hanging out at a club. He got to stay because he's cuter than Burim? That's what it seems like to me.
  20. I really think that these guys' moods would improve if they had an outdoor area to move around in. When we went camping we always had a large tarp that we strung up between the trees. Then you get a tall post to put in the middle to slope it so the rain runs off. You put your drying room with a fire at one side, and your shelter with a smaller fire at the other. That way you have warmth on both sides. It can be time consuming looking after both fires, but do they really have so much else to do? Generally though, you just go out in it. You reach a point where you can't get any wetter sometimes. Also, much like with cold weather, LAYERING! A nice thick sweater with a couple of t shirts underneath works really well. Especially if the sweater is wool. I don't think I would last out there by myself though, so more power to them for being out there for 3 weeks.
  21. I know Mitch is worried about mold, but really he's just hanging his stuff to dry. he needs a canopy, a larger fire and a drying pole across the fire. When things only get semi-dry, they get moldy. He needs to thoroughly dry everything out. He has a pretty good shelter, there is a ton of alder that is fast growing and springy all over the place, and more time than they know what to do with. Build three walls with a roof, cover them with branches to break the wind, and make a drying room. Sure everything will smell like wood smoke, but its better than mold.
  22. "I shall endeavour to persevere" Yes my dear, you will. The rain stops in May. I'm serious. The constant rain sound (for me) was very soothing. My bedroom was the back porch of the house, and It had sliding wooden 9 pane windows the on 3 sides. I used to open them all during rainstorms and fall asleep listening to the rain. Puts me right out. If Alan hadn't been talking, I probably would've been out like a light.
  23. I want to know why Katie Holmes was wearing a large shiny garbage bag. Spectacularly unattractive.
  24. Yeah, I got sidetracked this morning, as I wanted to comment on the young guy they had singing today. Then I waded through a bunch of posts, and my other post happened. (Sorry) What I had wanted to say was, what the heck was that. They guys voice was nice, but really, is this a hit song now? "Watch me (insert dance move), watch me (insert another thing)" over and over til the end of the song. I don't really know what to say about that. Adam Sandler was funny too, and I usually find him irritating. It's backwards day today. And Amy Shumer was hilarious the other day. I usually find her hard to take, but all the interviews I've seen of her promoting Trainwreck have been really good. Either she's toning it down, or I'm getting used to her.
  25. I have to ask this, as I have really noticed an escalation lately. Has Kelly Ripa stolen your Retirement funds, dissed your mom and kicked your dog? Because the vitriol aimed at her lately is very noticeable. It had calmed down in here some, but the last few weeks are making it almost unbearable to read. I'm starting to wonder if I should just abandon this thread altogether. I don't have strong feelings one way or the other about Kelly or Michael, but this thread is supposed to be about the show. Kelly does have her own thread, and most of the stuff here could quite easily go in there. Really, I just want to come here and read and/or talk about the guests, funny things that have been said...... The constant "Kelly is horrible/disgusting/not Regis/too old blah blah blah," could all go in her thread and I wouldn't even notice. I like to check and see what has been written about the show, but it always seems to be about how horrible Kelly is, or how Michael is just putting up with her until she is put out to pasture. I realize that this has turned into a long complaint, sorry about that, I just am having a hard time with the amount of vitriol here.
