    Fantasy literature

Who are your other favourites? I've spent time in Australia and found they really have a good indie book store and publishing market. I know thrillers and mysteries are big, but interested to hear your recs for fantasy. TIA.

    Barbie (2023)

It's been two days and I still have the Ken song stuck in my head. Fun, great time. Glad I saw it in theater as there was so much pink and laughter. My friend wanted to do Barbienheimer and we did it with a dinner break between ending with Barbie. I'll rewatch Barbie for sure.
  3. Yeah, he seemed more of a Senate aide and not for Strauss directly like Strauss had brought him in or he had been assigned to help him through the nomination. To me, the character became an audience stand in because we also came to realize Strauss's true nature as vindictive and petty.

  6. Please remember this is the No Book Talk thread. Please go back in your posts and edit out mentions of reading the book too much here. I understand posters go between now, but please be careful and only discuss your experience with the show here and not the books or how well it has been adapted. Thank you.
  7. How Australia Perfected the Food Competition Show - The author makes good points on why the show is so successful. I do feel more cynical especially about how the winners are generally chosen.

  10. Mohawks and a few Iroquois tribes were aligned with the British during the Revolutionary War. The Mohawks had a long established relationship with the British in North America so and they were frequent visitors in towns and forts. Ian being a Mohawk and European by birth is less common, but Mohawks had an adoption culture. The Métis indigenous people are descended from mixed Europeans and Indigenous people and they were becoming more a known group in the era of the show. It wouldn't be unusual to see mixed indigenous folk in BNA.

  16. The actors are playing older. Claire would not really look old though. Claire was brought up in the twentieth century. Even though she had an unconventional upbringing, she was not shown to be poor. Other than being in World War Two and going back in time, she's never had to struggle so there wouldn't be a lot of things that could age her in the same way. She was educated about health and doesn't smoke. She had access to health care more than the average woman of her time. A lot of looking older is a mix of poor health care, diet, stress, and genetics.
  17. Brianna did graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering but I don't remember if she actually had a lot of work experience in it before going back to the past. I agree that it strained credibility that she became such a big shot engineer so quickly especially considering how male dominated and misogynist engineering can be.
  18. This character "development" for Roger makes him insufferable in the last couple books because he basically refuses to be anything but answer his calling as a spiritual leader. He can sing and he's not a Fraser in terms of hunting, physical labour, or expertise (Bree as an engineer, Claire as a healer). I think Diana giving him this role would set him apart from the rest of the family except it made him more inconsequential since he doesn't seem to be that good of a minister.

  21. I don't know about the other older people around here, but back when we used landlines, I memorized the phone numbers of my close friends and family. As technology has evolved, people don't need to do it anymore so they tend to forget that info since technology takes care of it easily. Also, people did answer the phone after a couple rings or they had a service or office to pick up the message. Joe is a doctor who works at a hospital. The operator or an assistant will be able to get their message to him and Bree knows to make sure they can be available if at a store. Landline phones had to be everywhere in urban areas.
