  1. It's the current interpretation of the rule. When I was an official, it wasn't like that. It can swing back. Technically, iirc, 'even' is onsides. It's the interpretation of what 'even' means. You could say half the body or less is onside. Nowadays when offsides is flagged, they play on to see what happens before calling it back or letting it play. That's not technically the rule either. I used to wave the flag off if the ball played too long to the keeper or just went into some dead space where a defender retrieved it. You have time to make the decision. It's the same in calling advantage on a foul. Sometimes you call it, but the player stumbles and loses possession so you whistle the foul. The Dutch were better than the US, but if you have mental lapses on defense, world class players are going to make you pay. Those were fundamental soccer 101 blunders. I don't think they played scared. The US doesn't play great from behind, and that's really what happened. I tend to think the 4-3-3 doesn't work well because there's no real forwards, and I think getting a real 9 and a solid 6 in some type of 442, 4231 would be better. They possess the ball better than they used to. You're not going to beat any traditional powers, without building out.
  2. The Generation Gap wasa great gag. "The Price is Right Yodeler" is exactly the joke for this show. I liked the Nextdoor joke too. I didn't know Charles in Charge didn't have a last name! I *need* to work 'whore bath' into a conversation. I liked how Brian liked all the 'dog things'. Different pee smells; crushed Fruit Loops that Stewie knows about.
  3. Maggie talking in emojis is brilliant. Wow Skinner put the screws on Martin. I have no idea why the Montessori girl was carrying a chicken, but I laughed. Also brilliant Wire send up.
  4. I was pleased to see this movie pop up on Netflix last night. I also enjoyed the movie. It kind of reminded me of a Guy Ritchie film. I was going to call no way on the train being empty and the 1 minute stop, but they did explain it. Otherwise, a fun Saturday night. I've been on bullet trains (shinkansen) too! Those stops were the actual stops on the route from Tokyo to Kyoto. The trains are super long.
  5. Are we going to get any competitive games in this round?
  6. I still think Klinsmann was correct in that US players should be playing in the major European leagues.
  7. But that always seems to be the problem when they get to this stage. Early concede, play catchup, get put away late. They kept hammering about how they have a set piece coach. For what? That said, 2026 should be interesting.
  8. I was hoping for an actual competitive match for more than ten minutes. It wasn't really the missed chances than the complete lapse of defense 101. You can leave world class players wide open for a shot.
  9. I see we're back to the usual give up a goal early. US aren't known as a come from behind team. I was hoping this would be a game.
  10. Cavani isn't doing anyone any favors either. He flops way too much for someone with his strength. He could have powered through for a shot near the end and he threw himself on the floor.
  11. Drama! South Korea gets brilliant work from Son to go up 2-1 and advance. But wait! Uruguay could just score a 3rd goal and pull ahead on +/-!
  12. To be fair, that opens up a lot of risk to injury. I even use a count up clock when I chair conference talks. I give 2 minutes of stoppage over the time limit so they can wrapup.
  13. That's why if Spain got the second goal to tie, Japan would have been out on goal differential v Germany. I do back and forth on goal differential as a tiebreaker because on one hand, you do want to see an open game, but on the other, winning should be enough. Technically it is enough. I just don't like a situation where you advance because you have +4, but I go home even though I beat you. Basically everyone needed to win except Spain, and Germany needed all 4 of those goals plus some help. Spain, on the other hand, isn't particularly helpful. I mean, I would have fielded at least half a B team and subbed out the others in the second half. Soccer is unique because you don't stop the clock. Get out there and get at it! The decision on the stoppage time, iirc, is actually the head referee who communicates to the booth, or the fourth official. That's why you may see 6 minutes, but it's 6:10 or something. Stoppage time is very exciting and chaotic because sometimes one team is screaming for the whistle while the other is screaming to finish the play. Like, you won't see a game called on a corner kick. The defending side has to clear it. In tight games, there's also more fouls in the second half too. This World Cup has way higher stoppage times than anything I've ever seen. But, like you said, there's more injury, now VAR, and the increase to five substitutes.
  14. Germany up now. I think Spain was through regardless of any results. Japan needs the W.
  15. I do wonder how active Ham is with Crispin. Judy doesn't have a problem talking about third base in front of the entire family or whatever is on the mezzanine, so I don't really see them as up tight.
  16. Offsides is too much on a hair trigger and is holding up play too much. The whole body has to be over. Anything even with the attacker and defender should be played though.
  17. Terrible management by Belgium though. They should have pushed more in the first half. If you're too worried you're going to give up a goal to Croatia and play shy, then you've lost already.
  18. I think the point of the show is couching the cynicism of humanity through this absurdist concept of being on a space luxury liner. It's B level at best, but I still will watch a 3rd season.
  19. Reagan is voiced by Lizzy Caplan. So, actually kind of close. I keep thinking Richard Kind might have been better for Myc. The entire cast is a who's who of comedians though. I can't help but think the casting of Adam Scott v Caplan was deliberate. Don't forget to watch season 1 though.
  20. They at least tried to take something relevant. I'm aware of energy issues irl. This isn't a show I'm watching for Galactica levels of scifi, which wasn't too high as it was. I wish we were recycling at the level we should be.
  21. Yeah, Croatia was offside. The booth was scrambling for a way to reverse that weak sauce penalty. It looked like someone was jawing into his earpiece.
