  1. The reason is that the women were willing to work for $9 and the men weren't. Businesses only offer what they think they can get away with based on past experience, and will notice patterns.
  2. How is what Trump did an indicator of what Arnold will do? I'm not sure how many people familiar with Captain Stubing would like seeing an 85 y.o. Gavin McLeod. Since this is on NBC, they could probably get Captain Lee from Below Deck.
  3. What George did is about as businesslike as you can be. Essentially, the producers were a temp agency who had provided someone who wasn't doing the job he was supposed to be doing, and George asked them for a replacement. Certainly they knew of the time constraints and should have been prepared to respond immediately, even if they had hoped for something else from the guy with the funny hats.
  4. If it was BS, it went horribly wrong. Not only does the keyboardist look bad for not following instructions, which is what all of the hired pros are there for, but so does the producer for giving George a hard time about replacing the guy.
  5. An unbiased, comprehensive, study during the Clinton administration put the true gap at 5%, a figure still quoted although a more recent study says that it's too small to measure now. It's not just a matter of hours; it's choice of job. Something that allows you to be home for your kids after school or when they're sick isn't going to pay as well as something with a long rigorous schedule. But that's not unequal pay for equal work. As far as anecdotal evidence, I can point to women getting paid more that their male colleagues. Advertisers should stay out of political issues.
  6. What's disgusting is politicians who try to pretend we don't already have equal pay for equal work and imply there's discrimination, when the difference in annual earnings is due to women, on average, working fewer hours at different jobs. The "gender wage gap" won't disappear until you get rid of the traditional household model where the guy is the breadwinner.
  7. Around here, you generally don't see a line at a pharmacy counter unless you're in Walmart. Most people seem to be opting for a drive-thru.
  8. It does if the sensors in a smartphone wouldn't have enough sensitivity, resolution, or speed, or the real-time data would be too much for the app and something needs to preprocess/condense it.
  9. Prototypes are always bulky, and until they're done they won't know how much can be farmed out to a smartphone. Assuming they're not aiming for something implantable, or for an automated application, in which case building something around a smartphone isn't even an option.
  10. Apparently, Leonard is stubborn about his choices. She complimented Priya for being able to get him out of his hoodie, saying that she couldn't.
  11. Somebody noticed that what the charity's tax filings had been saying about its purpose wasn't what Holly was saying on the show, and the financials looked a lot more like a tax dodge than a legitimate charity.
  12. It was part of the partnership agreement the guys went in on for their invention that Sheldon couldn't be disrespectful of Howard or engineering, so Sheldon is more limited than he used to be. Lately they've been saying he wore her down, but from previous episodes, Penny saw herself as pushing 30 with no real prospects of getting a guy she could be enthusiastic about, so she settled for Leonard. In the episode where Raj went to the wine tasting with her (Claire) she mentioned that they had something casual going on, and Raj spent quite a bit of time in another episode bragging about dating both her and creepy Emily at the same time.
  13. Shortly before the finale, it came out on the net that his opponent's charity was a fraud, so I think the producers would have given Bret the win anyway, rather than risk embarrassment if the media picked it up. The rule in the past was that the team had to ask about their options, and initiate any negotiations on bending the usual payment rules if necessary. It wasn't up to QVC to offer everything.
  14. I'm surprised they didn't take advantage of the "easy pay" option they've mentioned on QVC tasks in prior seasons. Saying "it's only five payments of $22" will work better than saying it's $110. That's why nationally-advertised charities push for donations of "only X a month/day" instead of saying outright that they want $200 or $250.
  15. Then what was up with Wyatt's "Oh my God, that's him", like he didn't expect that? I think Wyatt was too hung up on his wife to go that far, but he could have done something to keep the stewardess tied up (including literally doing that). A shame when you consider how entertaining his confession might have been to a wife who wouldn't have remembered she was dead. So, go back further and get the stewardess to miss the flight. And she had missed beer why? The big-name brewers were already around when she was hiding (even Coors in CO), and the country was covered with local producers.
  16. Is that the one where they brag about it being non-stick and show somebody rinsing off the grill in a sink? As if rinsing grease down a drain is a good idea.
  17. Rittenhouse and the country are entwined and Flynn has been risking the latter to take down the former. The organization wants to meddle in its own interest, so, if anything, they want to better the country. Not that that won't have collateral damage, but things are going to suck for some folks regardless of the timeline. They didn't know dad was the bartender. Apparently, Wyatt's research on him stopped with getting a photo.
  18. You don't. You find an excuse to draw them into whatever's going on, and rely on them stepping up when the time comes At least, that's how it works in the movies.
  19. He really couldn't think of where he could find somebody in the world who would be willing to sacrifice themselves to save the world? Holy man? Somebody at death's door? I didn't hear anyone say the person had to belong to the Library.
  20. What charity ever has enough money? I wouldn't want to see a return to the days of celebrities playing for fake charities, but those that did really cared about winning. Maybe they ought to swing a deal with NBCUniversal to see what kind of gig they could offer to the top-money contestants as an incentive.
  21. As messages go, that's pretty lame. She could say the same thing regardless of whether Honda was near the top or one step above a Yugo.
  22. That's good craftsmanship if the guy's been sawing wood for 114 years.
  23. If they did, it might make sense strategically not to let anyone know. Who knows what they might overhear between Arnold and his son if they don't think any of the contestants will understand them?
  24. Having a guide or somebody else who can translate is usually considered sufficient in that context.
  25. I'm sure there are a bunch of reasons why you're supposed to stick to a language the people around you are likely to understand. People can be nosy, or untrusting, and can take offense at being excluded. Coming to a country without bothering to learn a local lingo first can be considered disrespectful, like you're expecting everyone there to accommodate you.
