Back to my original point... because Seth M is in charge of this show, this is exactly what will happen. The Krill will want to talk peace because of Ed’s highly questionable choice. And I will groan. And none of that made sense, unless the Krill woman is vital to their people. It was far more logical that the Krill would show up in numbers and blow the Orville out of space. We had not been shown that there was any reason for them to do anything else. The reason they didn’t is because the show has to demonstrate how smart Ed is. That’s all. It’s becoming like Cliff Huxtable in space. But without the roofies.

Hated almost everything about this episode, starting with Ed and his relationship. Cliched that Kelly knew. New girlfriend never seemed emotional about anything. First hint she was someone else. Is this why Alara is gone? Yuck. I continue to believe that casting Seth M as the lead was a mistake. He just can’t resist making Ed the smartest person on the screen. Krill just buzz around the Union? The Krill torture was very cartoony. And as soon as they did it I guessed Janelle was Krill. BTW, so fake Janelle creates a new persona in the union how long ago? And fooled everyone to get to Ed? How long did that take? And no one was concerned with what secrets she could have learned? The “action” was really more Lost in Space than TNG. And he really should have given her movies, not Billy Joel. What a barf inducing ending. Overall a disappointing low for Orville. Frustrating because this show usually aims higher. And the timing of the commercial breaks was just bizarre. Only Commander Grayson held her own.

Is LIndsay getting bigger? All the wedding stuff is starting to feel like Friends. I love the therapist.

MT zone is weird. I believe The Connors come on at 8 here. I just know that we lost 10-12 minutes. Weirdly, they started the show from the beginning. They just didn't finish it (or my DVR didn't figure it out). I just wondered if it was just us.

So I guess we were the only people who didn't see the last 10ish minutes of this episode because if Trump's speech and the Dem response? We record the show (and just watched it last night) and only made it to the point where they finished the baby shower and the lawyer for Dan came in and sat on their couch. Then it cut off. We're in the MTZ.

I get that. There are a lot of ways they could go that would be better. I liked season one in comparison to season two ... at least there was some urgency and you cared whether the cops solved it. In season two, we had a bunch of loser cops running around in circles. I didn't care about any of them. Season three returned to the "kids in danger," but unfortunately added a time jump element where we already know what is done is done. So I'm not sure what I care about yet. maybe older, dementia detective solving a cold case?
-
Actually, I know I said earlier that they copied the season one formula, but this is worse. In season one, lives were on the line. In this season, we jump to the future, where we know the crimes have already happened, and all that can change is closing a cold case. Not nearly as interesting. So far it’s mostly a standalone character study about some oddballs.

I guess I am one of the few who find the clandestine spy stuff uninteresting. I am way more interested in the two worlds and what their existence enables (how do people react when they meet their other, the dude in bed with himself, differences between the two worlds, etc.) Given all the spy stuff is based on an assumption that hasn’t been proven, it’s just not that Interesting. Also, I am bummed that management is just normal people. Was hoping for something more exotic.

Wait, what? I did skip some of this season, but Emily in the hospital is conscious? Did she just come out of it? Was she faking the whole time (seems impossible)? I know she realized which Howard it was so she responded, but what has she been doing all this time there?
-
That was a dumb ass plan to spend decades raising and training people and then inserting them into the other world. I suppose it was only part of it but I will be surprised if the rest of the plan is particularly sensible.

Agree, that it was. Which doesn't really fit the show's niche. I'm pretty much over the fact that Orville is a modern version of TNG, for the most part, and not a series of fart jokes as I first expected. But it still dips into Family Guy waters every episode, and usually it is good for a few laughs. Except this one. What the hell was that? I thought it was a commercial, then I thought it was going to end comically, and then ... it was over. Does the actress like horses? This may have been my biggest disappointment. Why go to all the trouble of showing how Alara can't move much for 45 minutes, then when the captain is in danger - poof! She's healed! It would have made much more sense for her to outsmart the bad guys. Out reason them. Out logic them. Show her training and her intelligence. THAT is something her dad could have been proud of. And really, if she is into the captain THAT much, why then bail on Orville? This is the sloppiness of the writing that crops up most episodes.

The first 40 minutes were very slow and mostly uninteresting. One of those side stories about a character that Trek did that were fine I suppose but whatever. Picardo really did look like an alien. Nice job, make up people. It was nice to see an attempt to create a world. The reason Alara went back was pretty weak. She always had family. They didn’t hate her. They didn’t understand her but they were there. Now they respect her choice and that’s a reason to give up all she has? No.

S05.E01: The Intransigence of Love
Ottis replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in You're The Worst [V]
That was ... not interesting. It reminded me of some theatre majors I knew years ago in college. They were forever going in and out of character, to the point you were never sure what was part of your conversation and what was them acting from some movie you had never seen. Eventually, you would lose interest and wander away. I really just want to laugh. -
As they have revealed more of the overarching plot of this show, I have become less and less interested. If this is about a power struggle on one side between two groups, one that for some reason thinks the other world tried to kill everyone in their world (and yet they only killed 7 percent, so ... they failed horribly?), I don't care. If this is about the fact that a copy of a world exists and the differences between the two worlds and why they matter, I'm in. With each episode, it feels more like the former than the latter, and I am losing interest.

Yeah, usually I'm all about lesbian sex scenes, but even I found myself wondering what these have to do with anything. I FF'd as well, which ... I didn't think was possible. But when you are watching and all you are thinking is, "now is this lesbian sex scene supposed to mean something, and what is it in relation to the other world," then it isn't working. Also, I am late to the party on this show. Sorry!

Semantics. If the Union is aware, then the captain should be aware. It's not like he has a huge staff, and again, stabby = bad. Also, Bortus seems to be one of the few (only?) senior staff members who are married/paired. It seems like a no brainer that if you have Moclan senior officer who is married, the Union should automatically flag a few things that are now relevant. Then again, maybe this is just a shoddy outfit. In any case, my reaction was to Seth's complete surprise over this, vs. his not paying attention enough. So clearly there was ignorance somewhere, and IMO there shouldn't have been. They seem to know plenty of other things about Moclan, including their diets and ability to withstand radiation. You *could* try to argue that Seth isn't a good captain, because that was the premise the show started with, and he doesn't know because of personal failings. But his actions haven't shown that. He doesn't screw up regularly, in fact, most of the time he acts as a more human Federation captain.

Yeah, me too. I’ve been posting here for years that this show is best with little to no Liz. Instead, they doubled down on her AND added a sister. And had the audacity to have Harold praise Liz for her “sacrifice.” I didn’t realize self-righteousness and cluelessness represented sacrifice. I just don’t care about her odyssey or who her dad is. And this time, I also didn’t care about seeing all the secondary characters again, either. So after watching since the beginning, I’m out.

This is the only thing I *didn't* like. As soon as the stabbing thing happened, and Seth seemed so surprised, I thought surely "the Union" has some passing understanding of the main cultural aspects of its crew members. A divorce may or may not be considered a main cultural aspect on its own, but *anything* that says "stabbing is OK" should be. Sometimes I think people who aren't married are the best relationship counselors! LOVED this. And I said the same thing to Mrs. Ottis when the show said only 30 could leave. I still half expected a miracle solution at the end. My only quibble is that they might have added a final scene interacting with the survivors on Orville to really nail the ending (since we just saw a bunch of people quietly sacrifice themselves), and that may have been what Bortus saw and used to return to his mate. But the short cut worked as well.
-
Much better than last week. Both an external planetary exploration plot and a very unusual internal plot that hasn’t been done like this unless you count Wesley being addicted to that VR game thingy. I liked pretty much all of it, even the end, where the two threads were brought together by Bortus gaining perspective from the sacrifice of the people left behind. Not as much on the humor front, though I LOL’d at the “went to town on myself” line. I also thought Isaac’s perspective on porn was very interesting, zeroing in on the fact society manufactures and places shame for it.

Whoa. You are thinking way too hard for Orville! You and your rational observations! Stop that, you! Exactly why I think it was a poor choice for a "welcome back" episode. Not a single plot interested me, or made me wonder what might happen next. Story telling 101: Hook your audience. Give us a season-setting incident/situation, and plots B and C can be about relationships. Like I said, this would have been a great VD episode, given it was ALL about relationships except for the peeing thing. Then again, for some ... ITA. I suppose you could wank that, off screen, Marcus realized what sort of trouble he was in due to Little Shit, and decided it wasn't so cool to be bad. But you have to do that on your own, because the show didn't help any.
-
Never have I cared less about any of the plots and yet enjoyed seeing a show back on the air. They should have held this episode for Valentine’s Day. At least then it would have made sense why we were seeing 4-5 plots about personal relationships on a show about exploring the universe. I’ll give them a pass for copying a real ST plot because the fact they made it about urinating was authentic Orville.

I see Saban and Knight as entirely different examples. Saban can freeze you out or be brusque. This 30 on 30 showed Knight aggressively approaching reporters during press conferences, shouting at them and questioning their ability. When I lived in Indiana, I saw more examples of this behavior from Knight on local broadcasts, and wondered why reporters didn't push back. I guess Knight was so big there that to push back might mean being frozen out, but still. It was collective Hoosier Hysteria I guess.

S44.E09: Matt Damon / Mark Ronson & Miley Cyrus
Ottis replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Saturday Night Live
Who the hell is Mark Ronson? The guitar player? is he in-house? Probably. But Michael's jokes were all one-note - all trying to get Colin to say something embarrassing for a white guy to say. Colin's jokes for Michael varied more. Also, I think it's interesting that a white guy can say certain things if a black guy writes them for him and that's acknowledged. Aren't some things considered "unacceptable" no matter who says them? It's so confusing. I laughed, though, which makes me bad I guess.
