  1. Sometimes it's not so much a matter of pronunciation as it is memory. I have a lot of difficulty registering Asian names, for instance, because they are essentially foreign words to me. One of the things I'm really enjoying about the show is the very light touch it uses (IMO) in addressing social and race issues. Its priority is being funny, but against this particular backdrop. When I watch comedies, I want to laugh. This show is up there with B99 in laugh output for me.
  2. A bit OT, but I watched Saving Mr. Banks recently, and was amused that P.L. Travers was so opposed to the casting of Dick Van Dyke as Bert. She had reason to worry, as his cockney "accent" is a strong contender for all-time worst movie accent!
  3. But the version they were watching was apparently on broadcast TV, so I would think it had to be edited down to no more than PG. Still, the dynamic being set up between Hank, Sarah and his ex-wife is pretty obnoxious. And while I think Ray Romano is to be applauded for the job he's doing as Hank, the writing for this character has become pretty awful since he was first introduced.
  4. That Halloween costume sketch highlighted the fact that Kate McKinnon has a very nice body and Jim Carrey.... does not. Was he padded or is that gut real?
  5. Even worse is the way anyone can walk into a partner's office at a major law firm. I've visited many law firms of varying sizes, and the reception area is always very isolated from actual work activity and offices. You don't get past there without the receptionist's approval.
  6. I live in Chicago and have driven to Indiana using highways, which make it very clear when you're crossing the state line. As others have pointed out, the specifics of Cary's Indiana foray were extremely contrived. That said, I did enjoy seeing Linda Lavin again. I think her character actually has some sympathy for Cary, and used this incident to warn him he needs to taking towing the line seriously. She did not report him for drinking, but for a technical infraction, and was able to provide counterbalancing evidence in her report so that his bail wasn't revoked outright. And she's keeping him away from Kalinda, whom she rightly (in my opinion) views as dangerous. She's crafty.
  7. Fixed that for you, in my opinion. Where would this happen? It sounded like the Harvard Law event was in Illinois but Cary had to inadvertently cross the Indiana border to get there, which doesn't make sense to me. Or did he just go an exit too far, then have to backtrack? Even more puzzling, in my opinion, is that a HL event would be held that close to the Indiana border anyway. I'd think it would be occur at some trendy bar in River North...
  8. Hanks and Lovitz had played the losers together several times before, no? I thought taking the characters to a cruise ship for old people -- and having them strike out even there -- was pretty funny.
  9. Whatever possessed them to buy a place with multiple floors? I thought a general rule of retirement living was "no stairs."
  10. It was good, but I like the ones with the Top 10 lists better (like this one about the fall of communism). This wasn't even my favorite sketch of the episode. I enjoyed the Bootblack sketch and the cruise sketch more, mostly because of Jon Lovitz. He can be a little one-note, but my, what he does with that note.
  11. Someone asked in an episode thread if Crosby is the youngest. In the movie, Diane Weist's character was the oldest sibling, followed by Steve Martin, Harley Jane Kozak, and Tom Hulce. Their characters are very roughly the models for Sarah, Adam, Julia and Crosby, but I don't know if the birth order was maintained. Anyone know for sure?
  12. Ooh, coming back in January. I hadn't realized it was so close. Yippee!
  13. Ha-ha, Li'l Sebastian is currently clomping all over AHS.
  14. Let's start with Zeek. (my god, does anyone actually spell it that way?) What exactly has this guy done to earn all the affection his kids and grandkids seem to have for him? He always come across to me as not only curmudgeonly but downright mean and possibly misanthropic. Was he the "bad boy" dad that let them get away with things, and they still warm to those memories? Ugh. Not a fan of Zeek (or, for that matter, of Craig T. Nelson, who famously proclaimed, "I've been on food stamps and welfare. Did anyone help me out? No.")
  15. Alicia graduated from Georgetown Law (purportedly at/near the top of her class, IIRC) and practiced law for a year or two before Grace's birthday. Why she was ever a "naïve housewife" baffles me.
  16. I noticed that, too! I compared before/after photos side-by-side and simply could not pinpoint what specific changes make her look so totally different. Odd.
  17. I think of it as an efficiency issue: when I open the fridge or a cabinet, I want to know where to look for what I want, and not have to hunt all over the darned thing. The willy-nilly/unlabeled approach also tends to result in a lot of food waste in my household. OTOH, I freely admit that I'm totally anal-retentive about this stuff! :D
  18. Spew alert! I'm now wiping tea off my monitor.
  19. SJP apparently shares Carrie's sense of entitlement. Sarah Jessica Parker Busted For Shoe Shoot at Carrie Bradshaw's House On the one hand, I hope they sue her for a share of the profits, but OTOH, I hope the shoe line tanks.
  20. [Dear Mods: apologies if this thread is out of place, but I feel the need to discuss Renee with my PTV homies!] So... What's up with Renee's new face? She actually looks "nice" here, but not at all like herself anymore. Very generic. She seems like a private person, so we may not hear much about this decision, but many of her admirers are finding it odd, to say the least.
  21. In Carrie's and the show's defense, I think she knew the line about seeing all the museums twice was an exaggeration. The point is that Alex had led her to believe they would have a life together in Paris, and she quickly found herself "stranded" as he devoted all his attention to the show -- and expected her to be at his beck and call, but only when he needed her. I liken it to Scarlett's Johansson's character, Charlotte, in Lost in Translation, a movie I loved. Yes, she too could have done more to enjoy herself in Japan, but sometimes you just feel what you feel. I thought LiT did a better job of conveying that than AAGiP did, but I can cut the latter some slack.
  22. Please forge on, FurryFury. Many of us were not keen on the first 10 minutes, but it definitely picked up after that.
