  1. Watched the first episode last night and very definitely did not fall asleep - in fact, I thought it was quite brilliant and engrossing and especially appreciated that it is "dense". I recommend this very highly if you have a reasonable attention span and don't need to have everything spelled out for you in giant bold letters like the usual TV show or movie.

    The NBA

First of all, from my experience (starting at age eight - lo, these many decades ago - at Candlestick Park where my parents initiated me into the joys of the San Francisco Giants, my team no matter what from then on, despite actually growing up in Los Angeles) is that SF fans and in fact, all Bay Area fans, are the best period in terms of loyalty, stick it out no matter the weather, and make some noise! In L.A. everyone comes in at the bottom of the second and leaves at the bottom of the seventh because of "traffic" - people say they are Dodger fans or Lakers fans but they are so quick to turn on the team when they aren't winning unlike Bay Area teams that know how long it can be between play off appearances, let along championship runs. I've never heard a crowd get behind a team the way the Roaracle does (and yes, I've been to a number of games over the last few years well before they were winning everything). I am personally not behind the move to SF even though the new Warriors stadium sounds lovely and can be a multi-purpose use for the city - all good - because it will make the games even more unaffordable to us regular folk and there is this super cheap comfortable hotel right across an undeveloped frontage zone from the current stadium so you can come in from out of town, not worry about parking at the stadium and just take a bit of a walk to and from the game to get back to your room if you want a fun overnight at the best of the NBA. No way this will be possible to do in SF :P So as to the series so far...appalled at the blatant referee bias towards LeBron (as great as he is, the calls make him look even better porque?) Love that Kerr has such a great command of the Warriors squad and when to call up who. I was so nervous about the first game and the first quarter justified all my nerves but I'm hoping that now the Splash Brothers and their posse will loosen up and show us what they are made of: Fun! Big Fun!
  3. Just saw this yesterday afternoon (yes, I saw all the previous Mad Max movies as they came out back in the day - still think Road Warrior is the best of the original three) and thought it was very, very good. Excellent casting and outstanding acting. And as many here have said previously, incredible art direction and camera work. Definitely will be seeing this again and I now hope for more Mad Max movies as long as George Miller will stay at the helm.
  4. Oh so sorry for your loss - I'm sure your Jack felt your love for him all the way...
  5. Which is why, in both cases (car repairs and medical procedures) it is often a good thing to get a second opinion. My son drives the car he came home from the hospital in (he is turning 24 at the end of the month and the car was already 3 years old when he was born) - its a Honda CRV wagon - and he has had three different quotes on a tune up: $400., $200. and $75 (the latter from some shady character off Craig's List). Last time he took the car in for a problem he was told he needed a new alternator so he took it for a second opinion to another mechanic, left the car with a note to do *nothing* before telling him what was wrong and how much it would cost (he did not volunteer any information as to what could be wrong to the second mechanic), came back at the end of the day and the second mechanic had gone ahead and replaced the alternator without asking! So my son was able to negotiate a charge just for the alternator itself (not the labor) as the mechanic had clearly overstepped...now he doesn't trust any mechanics and the car really needs a tune up! Anyways...
  6. Thank you all for the useful info - I am a total newbie to all of this as my parents have up until now (and my dad is 94 next month) been insanely healthy for the most part. It turns out that, as you said TV Goddess, the radiation oncologist was doubtful about the treatment prescribed for my mom as it was coming from her pulmonogist (that did the biopsy and collapsed one of her lungs in the process), and said something to the effect that the cancer is so slow growing that they may want to recommend no treatment at all, but that is the job of the medical oncologist to decide. I did not know this when I initially posted as my mom is not absorbing information very well so I had to wait to hear all this from my dad - it actually sounds like pretty good news and smart medicine on the part of the radiation oncologist (whom my mom just thought was blowing her off). okay, now back to the shew :)
  7. Thanks so much, TV Goddess! Of course this is now further confusing me as my mom was told specifically that she was only having radiation therapy, not chemotherapy. I will find out more...but as she is 89 years old, she is getting the definite impression that the healthcare juggernaut just wants her to go away and die...:(
  8. I watch Outlander! Felt like an eternity between the two halves of the season and now its going to go away again...sob! Although I have read the first six books, it was long enough ago that a lot of the time I forget what will happen next so my advanced age and dwindling memory is serving me well, entertainment-wise. A question for those of you who have had recent medical travails that involve cancer: What is the difference between an oncologist and a "medical oncologist"? My mom (age 89) was just diagnosed with lung cancer (apparently a very, very slow growing kind) - had a biopsy and has now been referred for radiation treatment. She went to an appointment this morning with an "oncologist" thinking that this was the visit (after 3 months of tests) that would set her up for the radiation (she is a feisty old bird who is ready to get cured and get on with life) but this doctor told her she has to see a "medical oncologist" first. Any idea of what/why?
  9. not to worry - being gluten free is "a piece of cake" these days (oh, I have been waiting years to use that, so sorry...) tons of wonderful brown rice based products now so you can have all the pasta and baking products you want and it seems like the grocery stores are getting a clue and have whole sections full of gluten free crackers, cookies, etc. Trader Joe's makes an awesome chocolate cake with no flour that is begging to be topped by vanilla ice cream. anyways I have been eating gluten free for many years and if it is true that you should be doing so, you will notice a significant improvement in whatever condition is being aggravated by gluten within two weeks if you really cut the gluten 100% - requires vigilance. Good luck and good health. and to get back to TFGH, I wish I was Anna and could eat all the french fries she is continually scarfing off other people's plates (and her own). No gluten but totally fattening!
  10. I know this is now well after the fact (as we have long ago moved on from the red carpet and into the inebriated awards period), but I have to say that I think Dakota Johnson had the dress for the win at this year's awards....most likely you may not have seen it but it is worth finding a picture of as it were and there you are :) Anyways its been a very fun episode of this yearly entertainment-folk-on-parade-while-drinking party (always more fun than the Oscars by far). But that the LEGO movie did not win ruins everything...no, not really but whaaaaaat? Do you know anyone who did not think that movie was the best?
  11. So glad to find this thread - another Arsenal devotee here...although this season is torture. I should be used to this as I am also a San Francisco Giants baseball fan (from age 8 - long predating my Arsenal love) and we pride ourselves on enduring misfortune. (yeah, yeah, not so much lately :) Anyways the game against the Saints today was a true trial and we were found so wanting - what has happened to Szezzzccy? and this was a crucial game - put some people on to score early and often, Arsene, not wait until its looking dire! Yet photos of Arsene and Dennis continue to grace my office walls. What can I say - Gunner forever.
  12. Oh so sorry for your losses, Box305 - I've had to say goodbye to a number of precious "furs" over the years and it is always so wrenching - nothing you get over easily so do be kind to yourself in every way.
  13. YAY! Can't get enough of that damn fine coffee! Looking forward to this very much!
  14. Great season premier and I so missed Bear's tweets over the summer. Good dog!
  15. So, Ian Hart was the guy with the vendetta against Marco (the whole death of the son arc) in the first season, was killed in jail a few weeks ago, and now he is a CIA agent (an entirely different person, obviously)? Someone in charge of casting loves this guy (well he is a great actor). He is also on Boardwalk Empire right now being evul. And I just saw him as Beethoven in a 2003 BBC film of the first performance of the Eroica Symphony (absolutely excellent for all you classical music fans out there). When he appeared next to Adam Arkin it was such a strange confluence of stuff I watch (including Sons of Anarchy, of course). And more on topic, I did love this episode although like many here I'm not quite sure what Marco is intending to do with Fausto ultimately - they have such a familial bond going...
  16. and a replay of old school (but not modern) OLTL Vicki....although there is no real parallel to Vicki on GH as Monica is invisible, Tracy without gravitas and Alexis, while a wonderful, adorable real woman and apparently a very professional lawyer to boot seems to be written without any momentum....she reacts as opposed to motivating any plot development. Since I have only watched GH since OLTL's demise, I am certainly open to correction on this point.. in other words, on OLTL Vicki and Dorian were plot instigators...here I don't see anything of the sort. Ava reacts, Monica reacts. Tracy reacts, etc. etc. Luke, etc. instigate. Whats up with that and any idea of if it will change anytime soon?
  17. where is Carrrrrrrrrrrlossss? Can we go on strike? No Sabrina without Carlos, right? On another note, does anyone have any spoilers as to Victor's next appearance?
  18. Very excited to see this show! I made it through the first 5 of the books (well, I read really quickly so that is a big advantage - they are very long) and the historical setting is the best! The casting looks really good too. Yay for Starz!
  19. Do we know when Sabrina returns? Not that I am looking forward to that...but if as someone else here posted that means Carrrrrrrrlos is coming back too, bring her on! I miss Johnny Z the most of any character that has exited stage left for plot purposes, but at least let us have some more Carlos!
  20. I loved Pacific Rim and was ready for The Strain when I heard it involved vampires...but the pilot for this series killed any interest I might have in seeing more. So, so dumb. It takes me a day or so to get to some programs so everyone has already posted quite usefully all the criticisms I have. One more: a day after seeing the program I can barely remember it (no, I'm not that old :)...not a single memorable character other than the hobbit and the old crazy guy (what an exhausted trope!). oh wells...
  21. Let me join in the old movie appreciation chorus! Besides the Thin Man series, we adore the Marx Brothers movies in this house. When my son was old enough (I think we decided that about 8 years old was ideal) we started showing him the Marx Brothers - and from the very first one, he literally fell off the couch he was laughing so hard!
  22. This episode was not shown where I am (central coastal California) as far as I can tell - anyone know if there was a pre-emption or if it will be repeated? I traveled to Lyon some years ago and was really looking forward to this one....
  23. Greetings! Another TWOPer who was entirely in lurk mode there and so glad to join you all here. GH without snark is not for me! As to this purported wedding of Ava and Sonny (ugh) - where is Olivia in all this? She would have to be told explicitly that Sonny shot AJ and only by marrying Ava would he be protected from prosecution and she is going to buy into all this? The level of shrieking we could expect would be breathtaking. Nah - I don't think its going to happen... I watch the show these days mostly for Brik (no Niz please!) as it were and Juliexis. So glad not to see Sabrina, Patrick or Felix recently - I don't like any of those characters much. Preferred the previous Lulu and enjoy tremendously Dr. O in all her nefarious machinations.
