America's Test Kitchen - General Discussion
Yeah No replied to David T. Cole's topic in America's Test Kitchen
Someone said in the comments on the website that they think the recipe asked for too much water and thought it should be 1/3 of a cup instead of 1/2 but they never posted back to say they tried it. I like Julia Child's easy blender hollandaise sauce, myself. I also thought this one looked interesting but haven't tried it: Sunny's 1-2-3 Hollandaise Sauce I've also tried adding a little dijon mustard and like that a lot for flavor even if it isn't traditional. I have seen a few recipes online calling for it, though. -
All she would have to do is make allegations to the right people. Obviously if the all the merchants say someone called to cancel, it points to some kind of sabotage. Telling the right people at least makes them aware that someone is trying to sabotage the event, even if there's no proof of who did it or that it's intended personally at Katie. And I'm sure they would not dismiss that. All she would need to do is tell them who she suspected. That would be enough. At first she pinned it on the group in general but even if she had the wrong person the others were at least in with her on it in some way if only to support the sentiment. Personally, I would never let that kind of thing go by without telling SOMEONE about it. Otherwise they get away with it completely. She could even tell the mean group that she let TPTB know that someone attempted to sabotage the event. It would be good to get them worried that they'd be found out. And the meanies who are just being generally nasty but not engaging in outright sabotage would think twice about being mean again knowing that she has a backbone and is willing to stand up to them. They're bullies.

Wow, I think this was the best episode yet. My favorite line was a blooper when Dietrich almost got his crotch trod on by the pig and said, "I know I don't use it very much but I've grown rather fond of it"! LOL In spite of what I said above I do agree with you. These are "mean girls" times 10 and why are they even allowed to get away with stuff like cancelling reservations for a community event? Isn't someone overseeing the gala that could get them in trouble for it? It's unrealistic plus just way over the top. I'm just over this type of nasty female character on TV shows. Enough already. It doesn't set a good example for girls, some of whom might actually think they're "cool" and want to be like them! And the assistant, again, not a bad idea but too over the top into stalker/creepy territory.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. But as you acknowledged, time is still existing in a vacuum on this show. The only shows that works on are the animated ones because there is no sense of progression in time, but this show has definitely not been like that. There is a sense that time is moving forward faster than Liza's age is as people's life situations evolve.

Geez, how many seasons is she going to be 26? Aren't we coming up on Season 5 already? SEASON 5, people! Nobody is 26 for that many seasons on any TV show. That's asking too much.
-
Why is the network rushing this season? So many new eps. inside of 2 days! I can't keep up!

Did they just show 3 back-to-back new episodes of this? Because I only had time to watch the first one. I knew that the gay man's mother would be OK with it because they wouldn't show an episode where the parent wasn't! I thought she seemed like a pretty neat person. Regarding the 14 year old mom, I thought she was beautiful, but I admit I'm a stickler for stuff like this - If you know you're going to be on national TV, at least touch up your roots, LOL. I'm her age so I relate to constant root touch ups. I couldn't imagine having a 46 year old daughter. Yikes. This had to have been a child rape situation anyway but the way the mother talked about it, it sounded like she was admitting she was "wild" and might have allowed it to happen. Knowing what a bad childhood she had I have no judgment of her.

Interesting new Q & A with Sutton Foster and Peter Hermann on Season 5:

Sounds like a cheesy romance novel.

I was expecting this to get cancelled and only came here to see if I was right. I didn't last past 4 episodes and even that was painful. I still can't believe it ever got made into a series with a pilot that bad. Sounds to me like someone had connections and was calling in a favor. I don't think I would have changed my mind even if the later episodes got a little better. It probably wouldn't have been enough.

I know this is an old post and I've never even watched this show, but I think the reason Jay was hired was because he and Tim are buds. Tim's been on Jay's car show at least twice and they seem pretty tight. I don't think it was anything more than that. Obviously, from what I'm reading, he wasn't hired because he really fit into the cast. It's nice to hear the show is coming back, though. I never thought it deserved cancellation.

I agree but it looks like the show abandoned the "what happened next" episodes. They left a lot of unfinished business last season that I thought would be the subject of such episodes this season but none have aired yet.

I agree but I also think LaToya is also somewhat of a ringer herself. I've felt that way from the very beginning. Right away I thought she handled food and utensils too comfortably for someone that doesn't know how to cook. Am I the only person that notices how painfully thin she is? The apron hides it but OMG she is almost anorexic if not full-on anorexic. She's veering into Karen Carpenter territory, and she also hid it under clothing. If that's how thin LaToya looks on camera, knowing how it can add 10 lbs., she must look even thinner in person! YIKES. When she went on about what foods she doesn't eat I thought to myself, "What food DOES she eat?" I do feel sorry for her, though. She seems like a sweet person.

Of course David not being a compelling presence was part of the manipulation. They chose him precisely because he wasn't compelling so that when he "lost" no one would really care and it would reinforce them shoving down our throats that Alex G. is really all that and that her insufferable arrogance (my word) over being an Iron Chef is justified. Vomit. We all knew going into this series that it was possible for the winner not to beat the three iron chefs but to see it play out like that was even more disappointing than it originally sounded like it would be. The entire concept of this series blows. Alton is pompous and insufferable plus him judging with the weak BS about being given "permission" from the Chairman feels overly contrived and really insults the audience's intelligence. Do they really think we're not going to think his vote was the deciding one on purpose? And I say both those things as someone that doesn't dislike Alex or Alton, just the way they're being portrayed here. What happened to the funny, quirky, cuddly "mad food scientist" we came to know and love in Alton? And yet I get the feeling the concept of this particular show and his role in it was his idea.

This was one of my favorite episodes so far. I never watched "Firefly" but knew that many scifi fans have never gotten over its cancellation. I never knew Nathan Fillion, but now want to know more. Knowing he'll be coming back to TV in another series is making me curious. I thought this episode was a very creative way to advertise his new show. With episodes like this and "Sliding Sweaters" I'm really starting to like this show. I hope that means it's finding its stride.

I think I find the constant complaining about Maria Bamford more annoying than Maria Bamford herself. I don't know why so many people are so against her. Sure, she's weird and odd but that's this show's specialty and her personal shtick, off which she makes a lot of money. I've suffered through a lot of weird and odd annoying characters on this show over the years, but if it bothered me that much I wouldn't watch it. -

Yes, I think it's precisely because he reminds her of Sheldon that she finds him charming. If not for having been totally won over by Sheldon she would never find Sturgis in the least bit attractive. -

Sounds to me like the fireman-bro bond made him say that. I can't believe that Jason would really love Ryan, despite not being the brightest bulb on the tree. -
He didn't update his profile, but he says he got a job so perhaps it didn't affect him. I'm convinced that young people today see being open about themselves online very differently than my generation. Employers today are willing to overlook some of that stuff. They do it because younger employees are that valuable to them. I think this quote of his nutshells it. It basically echoes what I've been saying about him. Look past the surface stuff to the real person. It's about what they would do, not what they said out of context, or how they can be perceived on the surface.
-
I'm convinced that no one knows how to use the English language properly anymore, especially on TV. I've given up on it. They consistently use "I" when they should use "me" and vice versa. It's such a simple rule, too!

I agree with you. I am actually happy that on BBT Georgie is being redeemed somewhat into a more intelligent, successful person that it looks like he'll become on "Young Sheldon". I am breathing a sigh of relief, actually. I think Jerry O'Connell is very convincing and wisely cast. His character development is very convincing too. This is exactly what I would have wanted him to be like as an adult. I'm sticking with YS, although I am somewhat disappointed because I don't think it correlates enough with BBT. I think it's good on its own, though.

Hah, very good for remembering that! It's just more fodder for my theory that she is looking for surface things but cannot tolerate the inevitable flaws or allow herself to feel vulnerable. Heaven forbid that someone see her looking less than perfect, or with a guy that looks less than perfect to the world. To her Jon would make her have to be too "messy" and that's intolerable for someone whose pants have to be perfectly pressed. She would probably be much happier with what we used to call back in the day "the strong silent type". You know, the he-man that doesn't engage in messy "feelings" or a give-and-take relationship. She wants an action figure that loves her from afar on her perfectly pressed pedestal, not someone with which she can share a close emotional bond. That would feel far too out of control and crazy to her. She only told the experts she was an adventure seeker so they would match her with someone like that. I still think the profile of the person I'm creating in my mind that matches Molly's requirements is someone very specific - Too specific not to be patterned on someone from her past. It could be her father.
-
I'm with you on this. I thing calling what he did "berating" is an exaggeration. I think a more accurate word would be "venting". I also think their arguments escalated because Molly was not going to give ONE inch. I can't blame Jon for being upset to find this out and hand her BS back to her. I admire him for not letting her push him around. I have suffered through how many seasons of this show where the reluctant partner is unpopular because they won't "enter into the process" or "give the person a chance". Well, as much as she tried to lie to the experts that she was giving him a chance, she didn't, and he knew it. I think her reasons for not giving him a chance were surface and exaggerated in her own mind as a cover for some kind of fear she has of allowing herself to be vulnerable. She sized Jon up as someone that was just a regular guy, not the exciting James Bond action figure he seems to be on paper. I think the experts were trying to give Molly her "fantasy man" by choosing Jon because let's face it, on paper he sounds pretty awesome. He checks off all the boxes of what Molly said she wanted. But they wrongly also chose him because he was just a regular guy that related to women in a regular way, not some kind of superhero or he-man type from a movie. Unfortunately Molly wasn't looking for the guy next door. I personally find Jon attractive because he has that interesting background but he's also just a normal everyday person. He isn't full of himself or self absorbed (I don't agree with people that think he is) and seems to want a more intimate give and take relationship with a woman. He has a vulnerable side. I think Molly is only happy with a guy that will put her on a pedestal and worship her from afar. Jon is looking for an equal and would want to get far too emotionally close for her comfort.
