Good Eats Reloaded - General Discussion
Yeah No replied to Meredith Quill's topic in Good Eats Reloaded
I know, especially since the actress, Merrilyn Crouch, is 56. I thought she was older than me and I'm 60! I cringe for her, because I would be embarrassed to look like that on TV. -

@humbleopinion, I agree with you 100%, especially about being incapable of watching MAFS Honeymoon Island. I think the question mark at the end of "Happily Ever After" is a clear hint of that not really being the case. If they have to give us any doubt about it going in, that can't be good. -

He's her brother, but I agree with you 100%. And I don't have any worries that he'll become a fixture either. He was a plot device to show that Rebecca is resolving some of her past. -
Yeah, but girls mature faster than boys. Plus I think she is a more well rounded genius. Sheldon is more of an "idiot savant", pardon the expression. His genius is more limited to certain areas and he is actually pretty deficient in others. Paige seems to understand human emotions and be less "literal" in her intellect, as in more intuitive.

I honestly don't understand all these "oops" babies. Today there are very effective forms of birth control. I would not have pictured Danielle as someone that would be lax about that. I realize no form of birth control is 100% effective, but it seems to happen a lot more now than when I was young and we didn't even have as many effective choices. -
Not to nitpick, but having been an executive assistant for a long time in large organizations, there should be a separate budget for office supplies such as standing desks. It shouldn't be coming out of the same budget as scientific projects. Plus, if the person produces a doctor's note, they're kind of under pressure to give it to them. But yeah, I know this is only TV.

I had the Sears version of the Easy Bake called the "Junior Chef" oven back in the late '60s and it worked much better than the Easy Bake my friends had even with the light bulb. I was amazed at how well it worked, and damn a 100 watt light bulb could get HOT!

Yes, I do remember her parents, but I forgot that they were never married. I think Ashley is a major pain in the ass and it has started to get to Anthony. I think a lot of us saw that coming during their season. -
My Generation: Period Set, Style, Slang, etc.

My mom's hair was short in the early '70s and she used those electric rollers every morning before leaving for work. I used to watch her do it and think it was such a chore. I don't remember any moms with hair as long as the mom on this show. I, however, had long hair parted in the middle like most teenage girls at that time. Think "Brady Bunch". Yeah, I was just thinking about this after this last episode. Too bad they're all boys, because my life revolved around Donny Osmond in 1972 and I would love to see that featured on the show. My bedroom was plastered with posters of him from Sixteen Magazine and Tiger Beat! I actually still have a lot of them stored away in my basement. They meant that much to me. Too bad I didn't save all those Mickey Mantle gum cards I had! Haha, my mom was always cool and way ahead of her time! In the '60s book bags or briefcases were big in New York, but as soon as we got into Jr. High in 1970 that became "out" and we just carried our books either loose or with those rubber band-style book holders that were big around that time. We never heard of backpacks or knapsacks. I remember when I started to see kids with them in the '80s I thought it was a great idea and wished we had them when I was their age! My parents were always early with electronic stuff, so they got a Betamax when they first came out, then quickly got a VHS recorder in about 1980. I vividly remember this because my mom recorded the Royal Wedding of Princess Diana and Charles on it. Plus she used to record "General Hospital" for us to watch after work. My whole family was addicted to GH. We got hooked because I started watching it with my roommates in college. We saw the whole "Luke and Laura" thing - Even my Dad and husband watched it with us, LOL! Hubbie and I used to go over their house once a week for dinner and a marathon viewing of that week's GH. Oh, those memories! Sorry, tearing up now! -

Ashley seemed like she was pissed that she and Anthony are clearly not the "darling couple" of the series anymore and have been outdone on that score by Bobby and Danielle. Isn't she the one that's a little competitive? I got the impression that her intensity and "dagger eyes" had something to do with hormones. Bobby and Danielle even acknowledged that they were still basically in "the honeymoon phase" and that they knew it probably wouldn't stay that way forever. If my husband and I were on this show when we were engaged or newly married and still in that phase we probably would have gagged everyone too. P.S. I never thought Ashley and Anthony were all that in love with each other. I think they like each other a whole lot but it never went over into the "head over heels" category of Bobby and Danielle. Ashley was so intent on having a baby that she was really trying to make it happen but it didn't. That's another reason for her obvious jealousy of B and D. -
My high school boyfriend's family had a microwave in 1975. They were always ahead of the curve that way. I remember he made hideous "scrambled eggs" for me in it. I was afraid of it and afraid to eat anything that came out of it especially after he told me how it actually "cooks" things. Most stuff came out awful, but we didn't know how to use one yet and thought you could actually cook things from scratch. I remember microwave cookbooks with recipes for CHICKEN of all things. GROSS! I didn't get a microwave until 1986 either, but at least by that time everyone had warned me that it was basically only for heating things up. I think the prices started to go way down around that time. Mine was very futuristic looking smooth black Toshiba with flat buttons and an LED readout. I had that thing for 15 years until I gave it to a friend, who had it for another several years! No one knew it was that old because its design was ahead of its time. I REALLY liked this episode - I split my sides several times and watched it twice. I'm glad I stuck with the show. I made my husband watch this episode and he kept freezing the frame to point out things in their house that his family had or remembered from that time. And of course we shared Fotomat stories. I loved that they had a replica or real kiosk in the show.

I realize that kind of discussion is not for everyone, but it's something I do and have been doing my whole life - to find symbolism in things. Of course it's not provable or quantifiable, but that's the realm of Theology for you. This show does involve a bit of "artistic license" for me in that a consistent God would friend everyone the same as Miles, but that doesn't mean I can't find some universal truth in the story. Like the way I can find universal meaning in the Book of Job even though it's a very personal story between Job and God. What I think is my opinion and I certainly don't expect everyone to think my way. I agree with you, and perhaps that's one reason why I feel I can relate to it so well as I am an Episcopalian. Whether or not one believes in God, helping people is always the right thing to do and is its own reward.
-
You know, I don't really think God removed himself completely. He took a step back to allow Miles to discover him on his own, which he did for Miles' benefit, not as a consequence, which I think is symbolic of what God does for creation in general. I realize I'm getting into the theological here, but it's hard for me not to as this show puts me squarely in that zone.

Hah, my husband said the first time they have a real fight it's going to be such a blowout that the cops will show up, LOL. I loved the look on Ashley's face when Bobby and Danielle both rated each other a 10. It was like "I smell BS", LOL. I agree with you about the strange body language between them. -
I hear you about the steamed stuff with the sauce on the side. I made that mistake once, LOL. Fortunately they're easy to talk to at my Chinese takeout and a few days ago they made me shrimp with lobster sauce with very little fat in it and it tasted quite good over white rice. They even used all egg whites in the sauce for me, so no yolks, which have fat. It was like the best thing I ever ate after feeling so food deprived!

Could be, as her real first name is Elizabeth, hence "Lizzy", hence "Gizzy". So true, and the "secret ingredient" when not duck fat is often salt. Chefs notoriously over-salt. I recently had gallbladder surgery and haven't been able to eat out unless it's sushi because I'm still on a low fat diet and can't trust what's in the food in restaurants even when I specifically ask for low fat food. Which sucks for me as a foodie, but it's made me super-conscious about how much fat is in everything. I have been relying on my cooking skills to make low fat versions of my favorite foods. When I say "low", I mean no more than 3-5 grams of fat per meal and small meals. My doctor says it's only temporary and that in time I should be able to go back to at least a semi-normal if not normal diet. I only hope, because this is misery. On the up side, I've lost a significant amount of weight and am back into my "skinny pants".

Long Island Medium - General Discussion
Yeah No replied to Tara Ariano's topic in Long Island Medium
Victoria's high testosterone level could be a sign of PCOS, which would account for sudden weight gain. It especially happens to women in her age bracket. I don't condone bullying anyone for their weight and I am not skinny either, but I am glad Theresa talked her into looking into the possible medical reasons for it. If it's caused by a condition, she should take steps to treat it as it could be unhealthy for her to ignore it. I know people today have a "take me as I am" attitude, but excess weight can be and often is a health issue, and to ignore it is not good for you in the long run. Witness the threads on this site for "My Big Fat Fabulous Life" to see why. -
That's interesting as I thought this episode ran very deep. The God account disappeared when Miles seemed to lose his commitment to his mission with it and reappeared when it knew Miles was ready to return and voluntarily recommit. The message here is that God wants us to seek him out, not just dutifully follow what we think his mission for us is. The discussion between Miles and his father tied into that. God chooses us but we in turn have to choose God. And maybe it was me, but I also saw a parallel between that greater plot and Rakesh and Jaya. Her leaving forced them to examine their feelings for each other and choose each other rather than just go along not defining that or even thinking about that stuff. When faced with losing someone you might have to face how you would feel if they were truly gone from your life. Same held true for Miles and the God account.

S12.E06: Behind the Scenes

Wow, I would have thought there would be more comments on this episode. I have often thought about the team Tony left behind and what their next step might be. I think it would be a shame if they couldn't stay together on another project, but seeing here how Tony was the force that tied them all together, it wouldn't be the same. He was their life force. The ending was specifically designed to bring on tears, and it was successful in my case. -
I didn't realize until just before he searched for it again that the purpose of the God account unfriending Miles was so that he would seek it out himself and voluntarily make the commitment to its mission for him on his own. Instead of just following along, Miles had to realize that he wanted to accept the mission it was calling him to make. Miles was not totally unaware of this, which is why he had that conversation with his father about callings. I did feel it was strange that after all that he didn't come to at least suspect that the account was really God, but I suppose that it wouldn't be the first time as a believer that I have been similarly frustrated with an atheist. I'm like, "Dude, it's right there in front of your face!" I think it's still going to be some time before Miles puts all of this together. I loved the scene between Rakesh, Jaya and their families. I don't think we've seen the last of her. Can't he go visit her? She'll have to come home from time to time too. Hah, as a New Yorker, this was the FIRST thing I thought! I also found myself freezing the frame on some of the aerial scenes and figuring out what I was looking at. One of them started at Central Park South looking south near 6th Avenue. I was able to pick out my old orthodontist's building. I'm long overdue for a trip to Manhattan. When I go to NY I visit my Dad but he doesn't live in Manhattan.

I agree with you. I think she will do the pretzel thing for a while as a transition until one day she realizes her "true calling", which might just be as a legal aid attorney representing poor women like she met in jail. Of course it would have to be after she is well enough for it not to be all about her.

To quote one of my all time favorite movies ("When Harry Met Sally"): "When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible".
