  1. Post WW2 boom is what created what we know as the "middle class".
  2. J is for Becky's Wedding Jeans that she was married to Mark in by a Justice of the Peace. That's a twofer lol.
  3. Saw this on Yotube today: Has a lot of footage I've never seen including the opening credits. I have to say the opening credits might be an indication of the rest of the show... I found it very wooden and lacking any chemistry between the actors. I wish they looked at the previous opening credit sequences and just said "do what you did here" again to each of them. Also didn't like how high the camera was. It was always very low and made you feel like you were sitting at the table. The scene with Lecy and Sara is also lacking in chemistry. The comic timing of the scene is WAY off. It's like they are just reciting lines instead of having a conversation. Darlenes line about womb being a historic landmark was actually pretty funny and classic Darlene, but Sara flubbed the delivery a bit. The best part of the old Roseanne was the timing. This seems like nobody has acted in 20 years, with the exception of John Goodman who overacts. Seems like "whacky Jackie" rubbed off on Dan Conner.
  4. I really hope when Sarah Chalke meets Roseanne for the first time, Roseanne says "where the hell have you been?". That would crack me up.
  5. Malice defined as "ill will". He never said anything about how his dad was a jerk for abandoning him. The original point of the conversation was that David's dad wasn't presented as a "bad person" until season 8 in the wedding episode. I think he was more of a sympathetic character in season 5.
  6. He appeared at Darlene's window because he wanted to run away with her and get married (I think that was said), saying "I can't live with my mother, not without my dad there". Sounds like malice to me.
  7. They were blue collar. Hardly of any means. Sometimes that happens. Dad Healy felt he couldn't leave the young daughters (Who from that Xmas episode I'd guess were maybe 7 and 9?) with mom Healey so he left with them. I'm sure it was incredibly hard for dad Healy economically to do this and unfortunately, 17 year old boy David had to go with his mom. Doesn't mean dad Healy didn't want to take David/love him. When David tells Darlene about what's happening, there's no malice about it.
  8. I don't think it's mentioned in the pre season 5 episodes that Mark was kicked out. He could have left on his own. He was a badass "rebel without a cause" type. He might not have wanted to live under the rules his parents set forth. Or, maybe he was kicked out. Clearly he was out of control so he deserved to be. Maybe when the parents got divorced his father could only take care of the much younger daughters. David was 16-17 at the time. It's not like he was left to fend for himself either. The plan was he would live with his mother.
  9. And the mascot didn't roar, it beltched lol.
  10. Possibly but the girl who played Molly was a pretty big "star" in the early 90s. She was the lead in a couple of the Halloween movies and I think she had been on another series too. I look at it as they brought in a "heavy hitter" to replace Becky. They knew she could act and be a proper foil to Darlene. Also, if you compare Becky and Molly they are pretty similar. Both high achievers and typical popular girl in high school. The Becky/Darlene rivalry worked and they wanted to keep it. Charolette was just a bonus character. Maybe they wanted to continue the sisterhood theme. Jackie and Roseanne sisters. Becky and Darlene sisters. Charolette and Molly sisters. David moving in was also another Becky replacement. A main character departs so let's fill the void with several minor characters. I've always said Becky leaving was a turning point in the show. Seasons 1-4 are more about the core family members. 5-9 are more about the "extended family" of characters and issue episodes. When Lecy left I'm sure it was a period of great uncertainty. No one likely knew the direction the show was going take. So they hedged. Molly and Charolette were good for a couple episodes but clearly they decided to focus on the David and Darlene storyline and not Molly and Darlene. Unlike Becky and Mark whose courtship wasn't really seen on screen, David and Darlene's was front and centre. It became a big part of the show. I guess they figured it was new ground and teen sisters fighting thing had been done.
  11. Healy dad was also retconned in season 8. Earlier seasons he was more sympathetic because his wife was cheating on him and he took care of his young daughters after the divorce. Then at Davids wedding he becomes some asshole that never did anything for Mark and David.
  12. It's weird that it was like that since I feel the only reason David didn't get into art school was because Sara Gilbert was leaving for college and they wanted to keep an existing character on the show to give them someone to write stories for. Kind of like how they tried to use the Tilden girls to fill the Becky hole but that never took off either.
  13. I feel like with that Becky one they looped old audio of her saying Becky onto the new clip...
  14. She was probably just a fill in because Bonnie Sheridan/Bramlett wasn't available at the time. It's like in season 4 with Sandra Bernhard. There's a couple episodes where they mention Nancy but she isn't shown (the Halloween ep in particular). She finally appears in the Vegas Vegas episode. They obviously knew they were introducing her at the beginning of the season because Arnie's previous girlfriend's name was Sharon so they created a brand new character for Sandra. I always just figured Sandra wasn't available until a bit later so they didn't introduce her right away.
  15. The way he looks now is probably as a result of health complications he's had due to him being overweight all those years. He was pretty slim during season 6 I think it was. Didn't look that much different. Aging sucks.
  16. Wow a lot has been going on here! Somehow I got signed out on my phone and thought there was no activity for the last two weeks because none of the topics were bolded lol. Anyways, I skimmed through everything and would like to present my opinion on Roseanne and not trying to take career training/refusing to work nights and weekends. Sorry if I say something that's already been brought up. Season 2 is really the main part of the show that deals with Roseanne's "working life" and the choices she made as a working mother. The other seasons she had steady work or was unemployed only for a few episodes. In season 2, Roseanne bounces around from job to job. Roseanne's job insecurity is contrasted with Dan's prosperity (sitcoms love conflict). Numerous episodes Dan talks about all the jobs he has and even turning down jobs because he is too busy. Roseanne is jealous of his success. A few times in season 2 she laments having quit Wellman. Mostly due to the fact she had been there 11 years (I think), had benefits and a pension. Benefits and a pension are even more important to a person married to a contractor with no such benefits. Point is, Wellman was more about her being there so long and the benefits. It was a job; she wasn't trying to climb the corporate ladder and become supervisor or anything like that. All the jobs in season 2 are the same thing, including the salon. Just jobs to make a bit of extra money and buy Becky designer jeans. Getting out of the house is also important to her. Dan is doing well enough that her employment isn't a necessity. In season 3 the idea Roseanne isn't a career woman is reinforced. In the Home Ec episode she gets defensive about Dan being asked to speak at the school and she isn't. She believes the job of wife and mother is undervalued. She doesn't even consider going in to talk about her job as a waitress or any previous job she has held. In the Bird is the Word episode the principal says he understands balancing a career with motherhood is a challenge. Roseanne counters that she doesn't have a career, she has a job. Her kids are her career. It really wasn't until season 5 and the diner that Roseanne wanted to be a business woman and take over as breadwinner. That is why I don't really agree when people say Roseanne should have taken a class in office management or been more flexible with her work schedule. Being a mother was #1 to her at that time. Her jobs were for social interaction and to make the family more comfortable. There are counter feminist movements of woman who are perfectly content to just be a wife and mother. They don't need success in business to feel fulfilled. Not every woman aspires to be a career person. The way I approach the show is that her kids were forefront seasons 1-4 and then once they grew up (and moved out) she wanted to "have something of her own" and open up The Lunchbox season 5 and beyond. Not that she made mistakes by not advancing her career seasons 1-4 and then finally getting her act together by season 5.
  17. I always liked Fisher before he beat up Jackie. Maybe Gary should have been the spousal abuser and Fisher the good guy. I bet Laurie would have approved.
  18. Sitcoms are usually based around conflict/contrast which explaìns why they didn't pair Rosey with "equals" from the beginning. I have gone back and watched season 1 a couple times recently and I don't think Jackie was originally concieved of as flakey and lacking self confidence. I think she was supposed to be an obnoxious, petulant/strong willed younger sister who was going to be a foil to Dan "You know what your problem is??". The mooch that always came over to do laundry and bug Dan. Crystal was supposed to be the flakey one with low self confidence that Roseanne always had to prop up. In season 2 they made Jackie into the indecisive, low self esteem sad sack. She kind of took that mantle over from Crystal and as we all know, Crystal disapeared early into season 5.
  19. Notice how Anne Marie wasn't there Chuck, but instead some other guy. She was mad that Darlene wanted to leave for college at 16. She had just lost Becky the year before.
