  1. She wanted to kick her out of the house on her 18th birthday like her and Dan had planned lol.
  2. In the cousin Ronnie ep (I think), Roseanne finds a money order to the board of education. Darlene explains it is so she can take a high school equivalency test. I guess that would be like a GED? Darlene was 16 when she wanted to go to college. Roseanne says she can't until she was 18. The reason for her wanting to go early is just that "she will have had all the creativity sucked out of her" by then. Would have been nice to have a better reason but Sara Gilbert wanted to leave to go to college and that was all they could think of I guess.
  3. The reason I say mend fences and move on is because (for anyone who doesn't know), from what I know of the premiere, Jackie and Roseanne haven't spoken since the election. In one of the publicity pics you can see a picture of Jackie as a cop up on a shelf above a the phone in the kitchen with a black ribbon over it. Like they are mourning the loss of conservative Jackie. Apparently the first episode will revolve around them getting back together. If they want to make the odd Trump joke fine. Just not an entire storyline please lol.
  4. I agree. A lot of working class Democrats switched and voted Trump.
  5. They were good about not making it seem like Ed was a total bigot. Roseanne just cites the example of "he always says he has no issues with the coloureds". I think we all know people from a certain age range who say that lol. People who went to tapings said his wife IS named Gina and she is overseas in the military.
  6. I'm with you on politics not being at the forefront. I'm hoping it's like the Will and Grace revival. The first ep might be political but then that's it. When DJs daughter was first revealed I got worried because I don't want the show to be overtly political. If DJ has a black/mixed daughter great, I have no issue with that. What I will have an issue with is if there's constant reference to how difficult it is for her to grow up in Lanford or how difficult it was for her mother and DJ to have a relationship and they overcame the bigotry against all odds. More recently, we found out that Mark will be "gender bending". Again, no issues with that but I don't want to lose an entire episode or more on how he has to deal with it in small town Lanford; or have to listen to a slew of Kaitlyn Jenner jokes. We only get 9 episodes and I just want them to be light hearted and FUNNY. The thing people forget is that Roseanne was a political show but politics were different then. Politics now is left vs right and us against them. Back in the 80s, it was political to have a show where mother knew best and father knows squat. It was political to show a "dysfunctional" family on TV. Remember George Bush saying there should be more families like The Waltons and less of The Simpsons? Now politics on a tv show means bashing the "other side". It means taking a position on one of the extreme ends of the political spectrum. You have to pick a side. Either you are a chicken shirt wearing Trump supporter, or a pussyhat wearing Hillary voter. -------------
  7. I really believe the election thing is just to explain that Jackie and Roseanne haven't spoken in a year. It's a hook for the premiere. Once that first episode is under their belts, I don't think Trump and the election are going to be a recurring theme.
  8. I am about as bleeding heart as they come but it doesn't bother me that Roseanne supports Trump or that her character does. What I AM concerned about is whether the show will be as witty and compelling as the original was. All of the revivals have been garbage. I had the highest of hopes with Fuller House but found that to be really stupidly written. The problem with the revivals is they write them as a modern sitcom. Us hardcore fans don't want a modern sitcom. We want an 80s style sitcom and I think the producers are too scared to give us that in fear of alienating new audiences.
  9. So you don't think her being dressed like that on a sitcom is just going for a cheap laugh? I'm not making a comment on the real world meaning of those items, but rather how they are being used in the revival. I believe that Laurie is responsible for kooky Jackie. Others think it was the writers. Yes, some characterization comes from the writers, but most comes from the actors themselves. That is their primary contribution to the creative process. A writer can give them lines to say, but how they deliver them comes from the actor. Laurie's playing of the role is unique to Laurie. Any other actress would have done it differently. I give her all the credit when it comes to how she gave life to Jackie Harris. But I also give her blame when it comes to the decline of the character. Roseanne was a runaway hit and she was a big part of that. I can't imagine Roseanne/the producers coming to her around season 6 and being like "let's start slowly turning Jackie into a goofball" and she just went along with it against her better judgement. At the very least, Laurie was complicit with the change. At worst, it was at Laurie's direction, possibly having something to do with having her first chiĺd. She took her lines and used the Jim Carrey approach to deliver them instead. Others here have speculated on the pregnancy thing causing the change, it's not just me. Just saying lol...
  10. John can't do anything but be great. ❤❤❤
  11. I don't think it's going to be Roseanne on a soapbox. Apparently as the show begins, her and Jackie haven't spoken since the election. Obviously they mend fences. Hopefully that is the end of the politics. I am more worried they are screwing up Jackie. Roseanne Barr is BSC and so is Roseanne Conner. So whatever. As long as the other characters around her melo her out, fine. Seasons 1-5.5 were like this but then her character really darkens and Jackie becomes Barney Fife. I always associate the slow downfall of the show and that purple quilted coat she started wearing in season 5. As soon as that coat makes an appearance, she becomes really rude and nasty. I still like the later seasons but her behaviour goes from crass to cringeworthy. Whoa, total tangent there. Back on topic lol. Seeing the picture of Jackie in the P**** hat and pink shirt leads me to believe this is going to be kooky Jackie and not the insecure, neurotic Jackie we all love. Take Roseanne's persona (whether fake or profound) with a grain of salt. Jackie is the north star on whether this will be any good.
  12. Why even reference a real politician? The original show never did. Make a show too topical and it has no replay value. Look at Murphy Brown. So many references to real world events from 30 years ago that I can't get into it.
  13. Maybe it's a slap in the face to Lecy. She left the show to college and didn't exactly go onto bigger and better things after the show. Make her character a washout after being a high achiever.
  14. I hope not. Seemed really disrespectful to actual troops when Roseanne joked about it.
  15. I don't think any of the characters will be exactly as they were on the original show. It's been 20 years since they played any of them. I am also not expecting Natalie West to have a big role. Her and Anne Marie/Chuckie will likely be used to fill in the background of a birthday party scene or some such event.
  16. I think it is more "jump the shark" that 4 owners were able to make a living off a small diner in Lanford lol. 1 owner ya... 2 MAYBE... But 4?
  17. I was kind of hoping the show would focus on economic issues.
  18. I like how they reference the relationship a couple times in season 4. A lot of shows would have just forgotten all about it almost 2 seasons later.
  19. That's a good catch. I get the impression Roseanne was really into poetry. Dan finds her poem in the garage and turns it into a play. She mentions all those female poets when trying to get Darlene into writing. I'm sure there's other examples out there. Just to continue on this, I watched the two "back" episodes in season 4 recently. In the one where she throws her back out, Jackie says she found exercise always helped her. In the one when Roseanne has the surgery, she tells the doctor that her back issue sometimes "flares up" or something but then Roseanne says "since when?" and Jackie says "Shut up..." Still weird she would have been put on desk duty for the rest of her career for such a minor injury.
  20. Lol, you don't have to say you respectfully disagree every time you post... You're right, she does start to come out of the funk but as I said, they back tracked on it. Instead of following the Karen bookstore storyline, they switched it up to the comic book and David. If you erased the Santa Clause episode from the season, you wouldn't have missed anything important. There is a documentary on Youtube done by a New Zealand (I think) group when they were making this episode. The producers, writers and Tom and Rosey talk about how crap the episode is lol. It does have its moments though and I like it far better than the season 5 ep that's for sure. I still maintain the Season 5 ep is garbage. I said this in a previous post, but when I was watching the show in syndication in the late 90s/early 00s on TBS, they never aired this episode for some reason. It was always skpped. I hadn't seen it until much later and I never felt like I was missing much! Home Improvement also always had a Halloween ep.
  21. The Santa Clause episode was pretty weak as far as Christmas episodes go. It takes place before Christmas and there's no Christmas dinner or gift exchanging. The house isn't even decorated and no tree. It also really isn't connected to the other episodes that season in any meaningful way. Most of it is about Darlene and Karen. They set it up as a possibly storyline for Darlene at the bookstore and having an interest in writing. That fizzled out in favour of giving Darlene a boyfriend and working on the comic book instead. The Season 5 ep also suffers from a similiar issue. While it is a true Christmas episode, it is completely isolated from the other episodes that season. Nothing consequental happens. Roseanne and Jackie at the diner decorating Nana Mary. Darlene and David having a tiff and making up. Dan with Marla and Nancy. Complete bottle episode. It's also not that funny. I feel that episode was a Christmas gift to the writers. Gave them a bit of a break. The best Thanksgiving eps were the complete opposite. They were connected to the season's arc. Season 2 ep really fleshes out all the extended family members (including Dan's mom), Jackie reveals she is a cop, and the Crystal and Ed relationship is introduced. Season 4 ep reveals Al's cheating.
  22. Estelle is 90. You really think she is going to sound the same or even be integral to the episodes she is in?
  23. I love the scene in the first episode with the comic book when Darlene shows it to Jackie. Jackie is reading it and makee that motherly "so proud" look lol. Great acting!
