  1. I watched that too. I think it was done by an Australian or New Zealand group though. Funny how that producer guy (I think it was Jay Daniel) said he was on thin ice and felt he could be fired at any time. Sure enough he was not long after lol. I felt that the drama was amped up a bit for that documentary. They make it like it was all last minute rewrites. In that episode they had the Santas Village set and the book store set. You don't just build those in a day lol. The core of the episode had to have been in place long before. I also can't believe how much she wanted the show to mimic her life. Tom and her open a loose meat sandwich shop in Iowa so guess what, her character on the show opens one too! Jackie even says they stole the idea from a place in Iowa. I always had a suspicion that the only reason the Bike Shop failed was so Roseanne could open the Lunchbox. All through season 4 it struggles but Dan would sell a couple bikes here and there and gets the snowmobile contract etc. Then the first episode of season 5 they close the shop and Becky leaves town etc. It's like they took their post season 4 hiatus and Roseanne decided to take the show in another direction yet again. It corresponded nicely with Lecy Goranson leaving for college and Mark losing his job at the shop so they leave. Makes you wonder how they would have written Becky off the show if the shop didn't close. Probably would have been like Darlene where she gets into some college program early and leaves for school.
  2. Just realized Ed Bagley Jr in the Fisher beat up episode was Roseanne's husband in She Devil.
  3. I think you might be applying 2017 values on characters who grew up in the 50s and 60s. Dan and Roseanne not going to college wasn't due to a lack of funds or motivation. The only people who went to college back then were doctors and lawyers and engineers and academics etc. Everyone else either went to a vocational school to be a nurse or a teacher or they went into a trade which would have been on the job apprenticeship training. Everyone else went to work in a factory right out high school. In the time period they grew up it would have been UNCOMMON for them to have gone to college. What's more interesting to me is how both Al and Ed were travelling salesmen. With Ed it was clear he was still working and always on the road as it was mentioned when he wasn't in an episode. With Al though, the fact he was a patio furniture salesman wasn't even mentioned until season 4 when they drive to Kansas City. In the couple episodes Al is in I always got the impression he was retired. They just show up on Roseannes doorstep because they "felt like going for a ride". A travelling salesman doesn't just do that lol. Also, there's that episode Bev comes for a visit but Al doesn't. There's no mention that he wasn't there because he was on the road. If that were Ed, there would have been a line of dialogue about him being on the road and that's why he wasn't there that week.
  4. First appearance of Nana Mary and Chuck. Did the title of this thread change?
  5. "Hey it's veal boy" "When he runs away the picture on the milk carton is going to be really confusing"
  6. She only took a puff or two so there wouldn't have been a plume of smoke in there. Plus Jackie stood by the door.
  7. Thanks. Haven't gotten that far in the season lol.
  8. Chuckie was one of the last to be fired because he had seniority though.
  9. One thing they got right about Ziggy was his last name though. In the first episode he's in he says his last name to Becky. Then when they are getting a loan in the next season Dan introduces him to the banker. I forgot what exactly the last name was though lol. There's the season 9 episode where Roseanne and Jackie work with James Brolin to save Wellman. It is twice established in season 4 that Wellman closed. In "The Commercial" Jerry Bowman loses his job at Wellman because they are in trouble. Then in "Secrets" Anne Marie tells them Chuckie lost his job and 'Wellman is history".
  10. This isn't like Star Trek. There's no Roseanne "canon". If they choose to pick some things but ignore the rest of season 9 I don't think anyone will care.
  11. I'd argue John was slightly better. Laurie had normal Jackie and then freak out Jackie. John had angry Dan, normal Dan, loveable skamp Dan, protector Dan PLUS he was also great at physical comedy. Laurie couldn't take a frying pan to the head like he could. John was more versatile is what I'm trying to say (I think).
  12. Personally, Bill Clinton is my favourite Rhodes Scholar!
  13. The one thing I do enjoy is that no one laughs at Brian Williams' lame jokes lol.
  14. By season 8 they only worked when the plot required it lol.
  15. Anyone else get annoyed with that one female producer that always laughs off camera? I don't need a laugh track on my news shows. If someone can send this message to the guy that has been doing that on Today Show for the past 20 years, that would be great too.
  16. During the interview with Marsha she says she can't work weekends lol. Also in the first Beauty shop episode Marsha says "we drip brew our coffee here" as she pours Roseanne a cup of coffee out of a percolator lol.
  17. The episode that really gives me chills is the one where Meg hits Roseanne with her car. It foreshadows what "could have been" in my eyes. Imagine the series for the next 7 years with Roseanne working at the beauty shop. We get to know the other employees there. Marsha who runs the shop and is a little kooky when it comes to her deceased husband Art. Iris is the loveable ethnic stereotype who is presumably a bit shellshocked from the Vietnam War but still maintains a sense of humour about it. The ditzy blonde Debbie is, well, a ditzy blonde. Meg continues to pester Roxanne as her former employer. Jackie the cop visits regularily in her police garb and talking like Joe Friday. She eventually weds Gary and we get all the storylines of Jackie still being a doormat and letting Gary control things. Crystal stays on the scene since she is a client at the beauty shop. Getting her "do done" gives the writers an excuse to put her in scenes without having to constantly write explanations of why Ed and the kid aren't there with her that week. Becky helps guide Darelene into adolescense and the world of dating. She continues to date Mark whenever the writers need some extra conflict. When the time comes and she ages out of high school, she decides to go to community college (or a heretofore unmentioned Lanford University) so she can remain a regular on the show. DJ continues being either the butt of jokes or the cute little deliverer of one liners. "Uh oh, someone's in trouble!" Dan continues to find success with his contracting business. He is the bread winner of the family, just like Ward Cleaver, but still finds time to be a loveable skamp. Disgusting isn't it?
  18. Have to disagree with you there. Season 1 was more "bottle episodes". There wasn't really a through line plot wise between the first episode and the last. It was a new series and no one knew if it would last. Despite this, all the episodes work pretty good. The only exception I can think of is the one where Sonny is in the bridge. Season 2 however was a bit of a mess in my eyes. I think the studio still had a lot of control over the show and they tried to pigeonhole the series into numerous sitcom tropes. Jackie becomes a cop and finds a man. Roseanne experiments with jobs at the beginning but then gets a job at a hair salon with a bunch of broadly drawn characters including her ex boss! Knee slapping comedy was bound to ensue! Dan's contracting company was doing great and the family was financially stable. More character driven stories about Becky and Darlene dating and Jackie falling in love but feeling insecure and Roseanne going through all the dumb jobs. Season 3 is when Roseanne Barr really got in control of the show and you can tell. Right at the beginning Jackie quits her job, dumps Gary and Roseanne quits the hair salon and starts at the Luncheonette. All that cliched garbage from season 2 was gone. Still character driven stories. Season 4 is the height of the series for me. Still character driven but they started with the theme episodes too like the birth control one right at the start. Then the infidelity of Roseanne's father. Also the overarching theme of blue collar becomes more apparant in the stories. The bike shop isn't a great success and they start to struggle. Season 5 is just after peak as the themes and issues start to take over the character stories. Seasons 6-9 are a freefall from there lol. Crystal was phased out because they were starting the Diner and they picked Sandra Bernhardt to be one of the partners. Crystal had 3 kids and an absent husband so she couldn't do it. Plus Roseanne and Berhardt were friends off screen. I also feel the Crystal and Ed relationship was one of the main reasons they kept her around. Theres hints going back to season 1 that there is something between them so you feel like it was planned from the start. Once they married her off and have her 2 infant babies I think they just ran out of storylines.
  19. The level of cereal and milk on DJs jeans changes when Becky spills it on him in S2 Am officer and a gentleman.
  20. Season 1 is better than 6-9 put together. Most shows are weird in season 1. Not Roseanne.
  21. The season 2 episode with Arnie's first appearance has Roseanne tell Jackie that Arnie works for the water and power company. Also he is practically married to a woman named Sharon. Then in like the second episode of the third season, Dan loans Arnie money to buy an engagement ring for NANCY. Also, Dan says Arnie throws a lot of work his way as a fellow contractor... Weird he would ditch Sharon then be close to engaged to Nancy in such a short period. Also he quickly changed careers. The saving grace though is when Nancy and Arnie get married in season 4, Nancy explains they met when Arnie was peeping on her while he worked for the water and power company.
  22. Sara Gilbert is unrecognizable to me. She doesn't even sound the same. Were there drugs involved?
  23. I mentioned this in another thread. In season 2 "Birthday" episode Roseanne is given Saturday's off for her birthday. Earlier in the season she quit Chicken Divine over working Saturdays.
