  1. I’ve decided Night Dentist specializes in vampires, and I would watch that show. I think civility is important when people disagree. The thing is when some people call for civility what they really mean is that they just want you to shut up and go away.
  2. I was talking to a friend about Teen Witch the other day. It’s so lame but I will always watch it if I see it on tv. “Top That” is just cringeworthy and unintentionally hilarious.

  4. The idea is that sometimes a movie is made with a hero or heroine who is supposed to be admirable but something about the writing, the context, or portrayal isn’t working. So a character who is supposed to be admirable comes off as horrible to the audience inspite of the filmakers intention. I think Duane Johnson’s character in San Andreas perfectly captures the concept. His pilot character is a first responder. When a crisis happens, it is his duty to rescue everyone he can. When the earthquake happens, not only does Duane Johnson’s character abandon his duty to rescue as many people as possible, but he steals government equipment (rescue helicopter) to focus all his efforts on rescuing his family. So not only are emergency services short a qualified person but also now don’t have a critical tool to rescue people. We’re supposed to think he’s a hero when he abandons his duty but in real life imagine of first responders had an attitude of “Screw you strangers. I’m only going to rescue people I love.” They would be horrible people. He doesn’t even seem torn or feel guilty about his choice.
  5. Deadpool 2 Man - “Is this your first time being robbed?” Woman nods Man - “You’re doing great.”
  6. The actor who plays Deadpool is from Canada.
  7. I really loved it. Wade can be too much at times but that's who he is as a character. It was a fun watch and that's all I was looking for. Deadpool is basically a dark, raunchy, live action cartoon, and it makes me laugh so much. I was so sad about Vanessa and so I loved that he fixed it. The fate of X-Force was just shocking and hilarious. I liked the running joke of Wade and Negasonic's girlfriend always saying hello to each other with enthusiasm no matter the circumstances and hope that continues in the next movie. Domino is such a wonderful addition. I think the Cable/Deadpool dynamic will be interesting. Vanessa telling Wade not to fuck Colossus cracked me up cause I think Wade would totally climb Colossus like a tree if Colossus were willing.
  8. I do think Peter Quill lacked some nuance. He can be an immature douche at times but he’s also a good man underneath it all and the writing leaned too much towards the immature. Tony was right and the focus should have been getting the guantlet off. I was really frustrated with Thor at the end. When it was revealed his new weapon had an axe, I immediately thought Thor’s going to cut off Thanos arm at the key moment and save everyone. I hate that Thor actually had the shot and went for the heart when getting the gaunlet off of Thanos should have been the priority. I feel like Starlord and Thor made the same error putting a personal desire for vengence above what should have been the ultimate goal of seperating Thanos from the gauntlet. Get the gauntlet first then kill Thanos. I enjoyed it for the most part. The ending really annoyed me because it required Thor to be stupid. If they had to lose I just wish it had been because he didn’t get there in time not that he made it but acted like an idiot. I’m not a fan of plot required stupidity. Dr. Strange clearly believed that losing the battle was key to utimately winning the war. I’m curious how it will play out but a reset has to happen. Thanos was a fascinating written villian. He speaks of the most horrible things in this calm reasonable tone and really believes that he is saving life in the universe by eliminating half the population. He’s a villian who sees himself as the savior. I hated him while at the same time found the character compelling. He really lives up to the concept of the villian who sees himself as the hero.
  9. There is one crime I’d like to see featured, but I don’t remember the names. A man had serious debt problems and decided to murder his wife and children. Then he fled, changed his name, and lived a good quiet life for several years until finally getting caught. When he was arrested, he claimed he murdered his family to protect them from the shame of his debt. He even said he considered suicide but that would be sinful and somehow thought killing the family was the more right thing to do. The twist was that he was unaware that their house had an original Tiffany window that he could have sold for tons of money and gotten rid of the debt and been well off. I remember thinking his rationale was just ridiclous in his claim that suicide was more sinful than murder. Does anyone remember the case?
  10. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much I like this show. I have one concern and that’s on the issue of consent. Ryn has the ability to compel people and her sister has the same skill. That is the trademark of a siren. So if someone were to have sex with a siren would it be rape? Ben nearly kissed Ryn in front of his girlfriend because of her power to draw people to her. He was able to shake off Ryn’s control and stop the kiss, but what if he had not been able to do that? Maddie clearly didn’t blame him for being drawn to Ryn. She didn’t seem to blame Ryn either and Maddie is approaching the situation in a more scientific way. She clearly sees it as an extension of Ryn’s power and Maddie herself has experienced Ryn’s pull. I won’t be able to get on board with any romance for the character if the issue of consent is not clearly dealt with. It’s like on Torchwood when Owen used the alien spray to seduce people into bed and the writers on the show disturbingly didn’t seem to comprehend that was rape because the spray made the victims enjoy the experience. Frankly, I think sex against your will that your rapist made you enjoy is pretty psychologically damaging. This show should not ignore that issue. If it’s clear that Ben and/or Maddie are truly consenting and not just being compelled than some sort of polyamorous situation would be an original take instead of some sort of triangle. I really like this cast and look forward to where this show goes.
  11. That product placement made me laugh. It was so jarring but still doesn’t top the characters on Days of Our Lives Midol product placement. I don’t mind product placement if it’s smoothly done. I get that these movies are a business and that advertisers are trying to find ways to get products seen when people are fast forwarding through commercials or using commercial free streaming. They just need to find a way to organically show the product like I remember in Nine Lives of Christmas the characters were drinking a certain brand of coffee. The scene was shot so viewers could clearly see the brand name but the characters weren’t clusmily trying to sell it. I started Home by Spring but got bored. I haven’t finished it yet. It’s just sitting on the dvr right now.
  12. I’d love for the show to tell the true story of the Amittyville/High Hopes murders. The fake horror story that the couple who moved in after the murders made up is famous, but I don’t think most people are familar with the real events.
  13. Or what if a Fairy attacks someone who is only hurts the fairy in self defense. Basically if Fairies decided to attack others they wouldn’t be able to defend themselves. Evil Elliot is going to be fascinating to watch. I appreciate Elliots love for Q but his actions have lead to himself and others being seriously screwed. I really don’t get why Fogg didn’t just let them revive magic and leave the library out of it. In general I love books and libraries but when I think of The Magicians library I turn into Leslie Knope from Parks and Rec
  14. Paige doesn’t seem ready for this kind of work and is surprisingly naive for someone whose supposed to have been training for three years. A big problem is that Elizabeth is the wrong person to be training Paige. She’s too protective and by trying to shield Paige from the worst aspects of the job Elizabeth is not properly preparing Paige to handle the work. One reason Paige is struggling is that Elizabeth is treating her as a daughter to be sheltered instead of a trainee who needs to understand how the job really works. Elizabeth is simultaneously getting Paige deeper into danger while at the same time not really giving Paige all the tools she needs to handle the danger under the guise of protecting her. The thing is Elizabeth is a necessary part of training Paige because her influence over Paige helps keep Paige in line with the cause but someone else should be taking over Paige’s training at this point. I think Elizabeth’s protectiveness of Paige is going to lead to Paige either getting caught or killed. It is also possible that Paige simply isn’t suited to field work regardless of who trains her. She might be better at being in a Martha type position in working in an office and quietly gathering intel which is what Elizabeth wanted for Paige. It really doesn’t make sense for Paige to be in the field. She should instead be building an impeccable record and trying to meet the right people so she can get a well placed job in the government. Using Paige in the field seems like an uneccessary risk to an asset that would be better used elsewhere. Also, Elizabeth is someone who tends to see what she wants to see to confirm what she already believes instead of adjusting her view when confronted with evidence that contradicts it. That means she may be too close to Paige to be capable of seeing what Paige’s skills actually are. Elizabeth wants to believe that Paiige will be her legacy and be a great spy and so that is what Elizabeth is going to see even when there are signs Paige may not be cut out for spy work.
  15. Here’s the thing, the victims don’t have the luxury of picking a criminal who will do believable things. It’s not their fault that the crime didn’t fit what the police thought it should. The criminal was an arrogant amateur who only succeeded because the police he was dealing with didn’t do their due diligence. It’s the job of the police to thoroughly investigate the crime even if they think it’s a hoax. It’s not the job of the victims to act in some perfect way to suit what the police want. The victims were traumatized and relying on the police who in this situation screwed up majorly. Doing things like refusing to take the kidnappers call so they can trace it is just crap police work. The victims are the only ones who didn’t do anything wrong. They were attacked by the criminal, then by the police, and then the public when they were innocent.
  16. I’m going to just give the answer and open up the thread to whoever wants to put a quote. Oscar
  17. I have read the book Gone With the Wind but have never been able to make myself actually sit down and watch the film. The book was enthralling and Scarlet is a fascinating character who can be awful but is compelling. But the problems you mentioned about the protrayal of white and black characters is a major flaw and as a result I have trouble watching the film. The book really upset me and so I can’t get motivated to watch the film even though I understand the technical achievements. One of these days I need to read The Wind Done Gone which tells the story of Gone With The Wind from the slaves perspective. I’d love a remake of Gone with the Wind told from the slaves point of view. Gone with the Wind and Birth of a Nation are movies that are important for technical reasons in film history but whose content is incredibly problematic.
  18. It’s horrifying that they mishandled the investigation so badly to the detriment of the victims. I can’t believe they put the boyfriend’s phone on airplane mode blocking calls the kidnapper said he would make so they were unable to answer and trace phone calls from the kidnapper. That shows that from the very beginning the police had tunnel vision and were convinced the kidnapping story was a lie. Even if you think the boyfriend’s lying you still keep the phone on just in case there is a phone call to trace. She could have been killed because the police refused to take the kidnapper’s calls. It’s like they wanted to avoid any evidence that contridicted with the hoax theory rather than objectively wanting to follow the evidence to the truth. The police rushed to tell the media it was a hoax ruininig an innocent couple’s reputation but once the truth comes out they refuse to publicly clear the couple. Sending a private note to apoligize while publicly refusing to admit to the horrific errors in the investigation was so cowardly. The criminal was free to repeat his crime because the first investigation was so terribly done. So much incompetence.
  19. My Monster Boyfriend - an interesting anaylsis of Shape Of Water as well as the whole beauty and beast trope. I appreciated the historical perspective.
