S08.E02: Whitney's Long-Distance Relationship
mamadrama replied to a topic in My Big Fat Fabulous Life
Chase IS part owner of the bar. He also manages it. It's not really even a bar, it's a pretty good-sized live music venue, bar, and grill. It's one of the biggest in Wilmington. They keep calling it a "college bar", but it's a lot more than that. It was very successful before COVID. He owns his home and has worked in the finance world in Wilmington for almost 8 years. Despite his stint on MBFFL as a hipster looking "bro", IRL he seems to have a lot of shit together and is fairly successful. Both of his jobs are legit. It would make no sense for Chase to give that up to move to Charlotte where he has nothing, especially when all Whit has is an online exercise class that could literally be filmed from anywhere. -
So they were together for 6 years and are only NOW, with tv cameras around and international fame, actually talking about a future and trying to make it happen...?

Yes, I've said the same on here. I don't think think that's anything I've seen people disagree with on this board. I must not have been clear in my post because what I was saying is that they had the opportunity to make her look even less like an asshole and they didn't take it. -

I think the original idea was to have them break up over distance. Considering how all this went down, though, I'm surprised they didn't reframe all these episodes to make it look like Whit was going to move to Wilmington over the summer. They could've had a "she was getting ready to move in with him and EVERYTHING and then he CHEATED." It would've created even more drama and sympathy. As is, Whitney is looking like she's a lot at fault. Which, obviously, that's usually the way it goes with her. -
I'm glad someone else brought this up! I think she's getting less attractive with each step, too, and she wasn't working with much to begin with.

I vote for the wine. Then you can forget that you just watched any of this. In fact, I started about 2 hours ago and I've already forgotten most of it. -

I had a root canal last week. I can confirm it's better. At least I got good drugs then. -

Me too. Ha! Babs just said that she wished Chase and Whitney could go ahead and give her a grandbaby. Well, if she's not picky on the mother... -

I was going with the "late July" and counting to the end of the month. But yes, it could be the end of March. Either way, Chase was an expectant father by then and most likely knew it. -

When they're on the bed, Whitney tells Chase that late July is "four months away." So this would make it April? We were already in quarantine then. And his GF had been pregnant for months. -

She'll never lose weight because that would be admitting that she's not already "fabulous." Also, if she lost weight she'd have to face the fact that people don't like her because of her personality. IMO there was going to be a breakup right before the wedding. Just a couple of days or a week or something before. It would leave Whitney devastated and allow her to wallow more. I hate it when people say "No X music" and just generalize it all like that. I like country music and there are many different subtypes in it. It's not all Bro Country and drinking songs. Allison Moorer, for one, is an amazing vocalist regardless of genre. -

I'm torn between feeling a little sad, embarassed, and elated. I'm very conflicted. The part of me that pretends it's real feels bad for her. The part of me that knows it's not is all, "Heck yeah, THIS is what I'm here for!" -

Yup. Isn't it ironic that the whole drama in Paris was over whether or not he wanted kids, and the new drama was over him getting another chick pregnant? That feels...odd. -

She literally has no reason to live in Charlotte. "The bar would be fine without you"? THAT'S the real asshole move-making him move from his real jobs to placate you in your non-location dependent one. -
I doubt there was one in the apartment. Washers and dryers are probably twice as much there as here. I was shocked in Kenya at the cost of dishwashers-$1500+ for 20yo models and people said that was everywhere. They do have washers/dryers in the youth hostels and most hotels, though, and laundromats in many of the communities. I bet Ari takes her stuff there or she pays a "laundry service"-ie, a woman comes and pucks them up and washes them. Deavan and Jihoon were living in an Air BnB at first. I wouldn't be shocked if their second one is also a short term rental.

Yeah, I assumed their relationship was fake, but the baby mama came from out of left field for me. I know it's wrong, but part of me loves this shit. -

Also...his ex? The one at the dance club? She's Ari's best friend. Don't let the show fool you into thinking she's jealous and they don't get along. There are literally more pictures of his ex on Ari's IG than there are of Bini... -

We didn't have to sign a lease in Kenya. No contracts and no deposit. I suspect it's a similar situation there. Contracts and leases may be required in the expat neighborhoods, in the pricier areas, but probably not where they are. Renting an apartment abroad doesn't always follow the same protocols are renting one here: contracts, deposits, first and last month's rent, credit check...Oftentimes it's done on a handshake. If what Bini is earning is enough to rent a place and pay the bills, is it really a "red flag"? The parents are upset that he can't provide a life based on American standards. If he can provide a life based on Ethiopian standards, however, then the only thing he's doing wrong is in the eyes of the Americans. If Ari and her family want her and Avi to live by their standards then either she's going to have to get a job or they're going to have to financially support them.

I'm trying to figure out Sumit's game. I'm starting to think that, since he seems to have trouble with life in general, that he enjoyed the fantasy of long-distance Jenny. Flirting, IM sex (God help us), a 2-dimensional person who he could imagine to be whatever he wanted. Her age didn't matter from afar. It may have even been an advantage because, again, Sumit doesn't feel like a go-getter. Someone older who can take care of everything might have felt good. Her one visit to India in 6 years was probably alright: he got to hang out and have sex. Again, her age may not have mattered because A) he was having sex and B) sneaking around was fun (Sumit DOES come across as juvenile). But now that she's there for good, reality has hit. He's learning that she's not the solid, mature person who can take control of life that he thought. He's on the outs with family and friends. She's...old. IMO the best thing she could do is take her ass home. The Indian parents aren't just going to get over it and change their minds overnight. She doesn't even like living there. She won't let him work. She's afraid. In the words of Dr Now, tis is bad sishuashun.
