  1. Awww man...can I come Giselle? Not only do I like your menu, I also like your weather! I can't handle outdoor concerts on this side of the country (metro DC) and don't know how people do it cause it's so hot, sticky and muggy. Right now it's nice outside so I'm going to take advantage and go sit at my new umbrella table and enjoy this rarity. Tonight's supper was Sweet Chili Chicken (from Grilling), Cowboy Caviar, and what I call Mexican Macaroni Salad. That chicken is so good I like to take it right out of the fridge and eat the leftovers cold (and I rarely do that w/ anything else). I love garnishing it with mint, cilantro and scallions--so pretty, so good. I stopped at Roy Roger's and got me some fried chicken. So damn good... Me too, ebk57! One of these days I need to try that Korean chain Bon Chon. Their fried chicken is supposed to be really crunchy crispy which I love. And I do the same thing when Mr P914 is out of town (one time I called Chinese delivery and had several different meals delivered cause I couldn't make up my mind what I wanted--had lots of yum leftovers).
  2. I'm sure this product has already been mentioned but I just replaced my 5 yr old Oxo veg/fruit peeler and wow! the blade is verrrrry sharp and can peel nectarines easily. They had two kinds of Oxo peelers at BB&B but I bought the original style and love it. Mr. P914 doesn't (he was peeling potatoes with the new one and did a job on his thumb--not enough for the ER like my incident years ago, but he needed a tight bandage!) So now I can peel fruit so easily (as opposed to doing the boiling water trick).
  3. Poaching eggs in water worked the first time for me but ever since? It gets so messy even though I twirl the water before dropping each egg in (and I think I put vinegar in the water too). Cups are easiest.
  4. Just had some fried green tomatoes (bought 2 green tomatoes at Wegmans the other day). They were good but I'm sure if I were a southerner I'd make them better! Dinner tonight will be grilled brats and burgers, corn on the cob and good ol' potato salad ;>)
  5. I found the recipe! And thanks, Bastet, for the info' on piquillo peppers. The recipe is for Piquillo Romesco Sauce. Never made it before but I had it at Jose Andres' restaurant, Jaleo, last year and loved it.
  6. I didn't know where to post this but...what are piquillo peppers? Are they hot? or mild? I bought a jar of grilled piquillo peppers in water (it sez) because there's a recipe (somewhere!!) that called for them and if I can find that recipe I now have those required peppers ;>)
  7. I've never tried cream cheese and olive sandwiches but remember when they were all the rage. Maybe I'd like them because I love the Philadelphia brand Garden Vegetable cream cheese spread on crackers. No idea what to make for supper--maybe just leftovers to clean out the refrigerator! A little bit of this & a little bit of that.
  8. Oh fer cryin' out loud...I missed it again. I guess I'll have some episodes to watch for the first time when they re-run them. ~sigh~
  9. I made a frittata and threw in stuff that was in the fridge (cut up ham cold cut, sauted mushrooms, some minced bell pepper, etc) and a new salad that I found in Parade Magazine this morning that called for grilled peaches (I had nectarines).
  10. I always thought of them as balloons--still do. When I was in grade school, we went on a tour of a local commercial bakery where they made Wonder Bread. As we were leaving they handed out teeny tiny loaves of Wonder Bread in the same wrapping. We kids were thrilled and I know I've never forgotten that cute miniature loaf of bread. My mother disliked WB and never bought it, much to my despair (kids love that kind of bread, don't they?).
  11. Potato salad is good (but takes much longer than macaroni salad to make!). I remember, as a kid, having potato salad with a vinaigrette like dressing. My aunt and uncle would buy it in Mt. Vernon at a German deli, bringing it upstate to us (along with fabulous cold cuts and rolls). I've never made it but I remember Ina making it and also reading somewhere that it's a French style potato salad. I also love the German warm potato salad but would never try to make it. Back to regular, cold potato salad with mayo dressing: sometimes I put some horseradish in the mayo which is quite good. There's also a Dilled Potato and Pickled Cucumber Salad that has a little of both styles. The cucumber slices and fresh dill soak up the vinegar, are drained and then you add the potatoes, radishes & mayo. Quite good! Back on topic: Supper/dinner last night was Asian style salmon and sesame noodles. Tonight will be leftovers from Monday's grilling of brats and burgers, and some macaroni salad :>)
  12. That macaroni salad I made for supper was very good. Mayo + picante sauce, some leftover cooked shrimp, bell peppers, a bit of seasoning, and a little Vidalia onion minced.
  13. I'm surprised so see several of you here don't have Smartphones. So, Mr. P914 ain't the only rebel. I have probably the cheapest, smallest Smartphone sold (got it in Sears). It's a Motorola. I hate using the phone for calls, but love being online with it, checking emails, Facebook stuff, reading the Washington Post, and playing Solitaire when I'm bored and there's nothing to do (if I wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep is a great time for Solitaire). And I adore taking photos and posting immediately on Facebook or emailing them. Heck, it keeps me out of trouble ;>)
  14. We're grilling tonight instead of tomorrow (at Mr. P914's request): burgers and brats and maybe some macaroni salad (JTMacc99 gave me the idea, thanks!). Happy Birthday America!
  15. Oh noooooo...I forgot to watch. Sheesh. I hate this Sunday morning time slot for Ina. So she brought Jose back? Maybe that trick with the bottle and egg separation is good for folks who aren't comfortable holding the cracked egg and letting the eggwhite slide out (but I doubt Jose has issues with that!!)
  16. I cooked some Parmesan Chicken that I'd defrosted (they were extras from P. Chicken I made a month ago). Gosh, they're good when they get crispy and golden. I think they're an Ina recipe. Also made whipped potatoes--love that stuff! And some cooked zucchini & summer squash. AND, I ate the remaining 3 Good Humor bars sitting in the freezer (they're little and one just isn't enough).
  17. I found them in Safeway. I know what you mean--the other supermarkets in our area only carry the choc eclair and strawberry shortcake bars which do not interest me at all. I remember when Good Humor trucks would park outside my high school (yeah...back in the day, waaaay back) and I'd get the white coconute covered vanilla bar. My all time favorite!
  18. I really don't like anything in my ice cream (preferably vanilla) but I put stuff on top of the ice cream sometimes. Altho' I do like Rocky Road with the bits of marshmallow. Right now I have a box of Good Humor toasted almonds in the freezer and trying very hard to eat one a day (this is very difficult, and I didn't succeed today).
  19. Greenwood brand pickled beets. We ate them growing up and then I moved away from NYS and had a hard time finding them. Heard they went out of business. Don't like other brands. Sniff.
  20. I've found knee-length cotton skirts at Talbots. With a nice cotton t-shirt and some type of cardigan I'd think that would pass as decent attire for a tourist. I prefer cropped pants, t-shirts and the LL Bean fitness jackets when on vacation, here or in Europe (complete with my dark gray New Balance sneakers for walking!) We're quiet people but "they" always know we're from the US (except for some Swedes and Norwegians, once, who thought I was one of them :>)
  21. I agree with you re: the shooting of the state trooper. Re: a season 4? I'm not so sure any more how I feel about that. Maybe if they got back to a story similar to the movie I'd be interested (e.g., some murders, some decent police action, some good ol' Minnesota indignation with a few "characters" thrown in).
  22. That's the interesting thing about food in Europe (esp France and Italy). People expect it to be wonderful and yet there are some mediocre restaurants (just like we have here) which is always a surprise. Don't envy your trip home. When I'm heading home I want to be there now (if I were Samantha Stevens I'd wiggle my nose, that's how impatient I am to get home). Hope you've been able to find a really excellent pizza pie :>)
  23. I put them in the fridge for 30 minutes. Maybe I should leave them in there longer? I don't like a lot of binder in crab cakes either.
  24. I made Avocado Caprese Skillet Chicken using two thin chicken breasts (the last from Trader Joe's bag of froz chicken breasts). Mr. P914 told me it was good--twice! And it was. The only thing I didn't do was drizzle a balsamic glaze over it - doesn't need it. I use canned lump crabmeat when I make crab salad or crab cakes and I usually wait until they're on sale and make them right away. Crab cakes are hard to make though (keeping them together - they fall apart on me as I'm getting them in the skillet or flipping them over).
