  1. Big Shots - aired on ABC in 2007 for one season. It was a breezy, guilty pleasure kinda like Mistresses was, except it was about four guy friends. I thought it was well cast with Dylan McDermott and Michael Vartan being stand outs. And four main male cast characters were all different from each other and had different enough storylines that is was interesting. Of the female characters Nia Long and Paige Turco were my favorites. The show started out a little glib and glitzy, but I thought it hit its stride in the second half of its season. I especially liked the storyline of Michael Vartan and Nia Long's BFFs James & Katie who slowly realized they really liked liked each other. They had great on screen chemistry and snappy banter (although I think the show lit Nia Long criminally bad). I think it was a casualty of the writer's strike. Too bad.
  2. I frickin LOVED that trailer. Those kids look excellent. What is really surprising me, though is all the commentary surrounding this show. If you ever though for a minute (like actually nobody really would think it) that race was not a complex issue, read some commentary around the optics of the show. You have these Hoteps going on and on and on about tv being for the white man and this show is an agenda blah blah blah. You have fans of blackish who dislike the casting of Tika Sumpter as Bow's mother, you have non-biracial folks who think it is being naive about blackness, you have people who don't think it gets communes right, you have people who hate the title, and you randos who don't want another 'retro' ABC family comedy. Good lord, it just looks like a funny family comedy!
  3. Been through this with The Walking Dead. Had no desire to revisit it with GOT. Probably not a coincidence that both are adaptations from work from another medium that allows a lot more space & time to tell a story. The original story isn't done and no matter how involved the original creator is, it is obvious the new creators can't carry over the entire vision, especially as it has to build on what came before.
  4. Yeah, I don't remember if you read the Kate Daniels series, but Mercy & Adam remind me a lot of Kate and Curran. Just these two series always go together in my head, usually because the books always seemed to be released at the same time and the writing, characters, and situations were always uniformly excellent. And each respective writer does their world build so well. In this one, I was a little apprehensive about he main antagonists only because they had already wreaked some havoc in the last Charles & Anna book. So I knew they could be troublesome.
  5. I liked it too. And I understand what you mean by not thinking she is sexy. I mean, she is HOT, but she doesn't exude sexiness. Except once... in Strange Days the Kathryn Bigelow movie starring her and Ralph Fiennes. She was a total bad-ass named Mace (she had long braids in that one too!) and she was super hot and super sexy and you just wanted her and Ralph to shag each other to death. But he was too stupid to see what was in front of his face because he was obsessed by Juliette Lewis' terrible character. I did not recognize her at all! But then again her tv husband was so distracting. I swear he looked like a human version of The Cowardly Lion.
  6. So CBS released some trailers for their new shows coming this fall and one them is a drama called All Rise starring .... GASP... Simone Missick....a black woman. They have a couple of others with POC leads, EVIL starring Mike Colter. And a comedy called Bob Hearts Abishola which seems very Mike and Molly-ish (I never actually saw a single episode of Mike and Molly, but this is what I imagine it was like). But Honestly watching the trailer for All Rise I kept checking to make sure I was actually on CBS' site because the show looks positively ABC-ish. I'll check it out of course because I love her and the show actually is something I'd normally watch... on ABC. Here's the trailer:
  7. Hard pass on Miley but I was so damned pleased to see Nicole Beharie show up I had to rewind to see if it was really her! Yes. I will be all over that episode!
  8. Just finished Storm Cursed by Patricia Briggs. It is the 11th book in the Mercy Thompson series. So far no series fatigue here. I enjoyed it immensely. This one was nice tense with a good formidable foe for our heroes. And made some real interesting character choices for 2 of the series long term characters. And started to fill in some blanks nicely for a fairly recent addition to the recurring cast.
  9. Oh my stars, yes. And when you mentioned it is ok for characters to die from natural causes if done right I immediately thought of Joyce Summers even before I read your next sentence! The season one finale of New Amsterdam did this very thing. They had a horrific accident in the final minute of the finale leading to a stupid cliffhanger. It is a medical show, people! You don't have to do and OMG! ending. And now the showrunner is being interviewed talking about how a 'key' character died but you don't know who it is. Just so pointless. And then I saw on TVline they are giving reactions to the new pilots for the networks for the upcoming season and one of them is about a serial killer and his son. And it is all dark and moody and Michael Sheen has crazy serial killer eyes and is totally trying to channel Hannibal Lecter. And one of the writers on the site gushes about "prestige tv comes to network! ' and how the show is 'refreshingly dark.' Um what? 'Refreshingly dark'? GTFOH with that mess.
  10. Is that what happened? Cuz, yeah it was confusing at the end there. I thought he somehow got away and stole the ambulance and caused the crash because in the quick cut it looked like his was thrown halfway through the window from the inside.
  11. Sigh. This show just can't help itself can it? It is ending on a season 5 cliffhanger in season 1. No sign of Helen and Bloom looks critically injured. So of course all the promos for next season will be who died. Sigh. Don't care about Georgia but I am glad they didn't kill her off so predictably. Floy'ds family dinner. Whew mama! On the one hand I liked the little posturing between Evie and Floyd's sister over their respective colleges (HBCU vs. PWI) that conversation has happened in my household. And then their instant sisterhood upon they were sorors. But the whole conversation with his mother and the family dynamic was too, too much. I kept thinking to myself, if he doesn't want Evie because of some theoretical family structure, then she dodged a big ass bullet. Also, no frickin' way I am spending every Sunday with my in-laws. Oh Hells, no! I mean, I love them an all, but no.
  12. I suspected as much. I suspected they did the heel turn on Shannon after trying to rehab her character because they had already soured her back-story with the fans and could never make up the ground. Also the actress simply, imo, could not convey warmth or remorse so a redemption arc just couldn't work with her.
  13. Really nice season finale. No weird cliffhangers. No gratuitous deaths. Some shows just deliver a good show that leaves you smiling a little. But man, this season seemed to just fly past. - Between the lack of character development with Eddie's ex to really get us invested in her before they killed her off, and now this 11th hour pop up of Buck's new girlfriend (did she even appear in any episodes after the mid-season break?), it feels like the show could have benefited from at least two more episodes or either dialed back on the special eps. - I did like that the bomber storyline was a continuation of Bobby's origin story. - Eddie's promotion party is the sort of montage scene I just dorkily love. - Carla! Hi, Carla! - Buck's new pad is suh-weet! poor Buck tho. Great acting, he looked scared pinned under the truck. And his primal scream when they pulled him was also pretty solid. - I like that the show remembers Maddie was a nurse a lot. - Man this show loves to troll the Buck/Eddie shippers. - Awww, Athena and Bobby got married. Didn't expect that to happen quite so soon, but it is a season finale and weddings tend to happen. Great way to end the season.
  14. OMG. I hate this. The worst I ever saw of this trope was a book i read where the serial killer had bottomless resources -- a seemingly endless supply of fake Ids and credit cards to go with those ids, lots of ready cash (his family was wealthy, natch), is an expert at computer hacking, surveillance, changing their appearance, have a 160 IQ so they are so smart about everything. Until they aren't, Because of course they have to deviate from their regular serial killing M.O. to go after the female detective and die in a hail of bullets.
  15. Oh man, I just discovered this show and have binged all one 1/2 seasons of it. It has done for Tracy Morgan what Brooklyn 99 did for Andy Samberg for me, which is it has take a comedian I never had any time for or actively disliked and made me like them. And Tiffany Haddish is as usual excellent. I actually like her performance in this, it is nicely restrained and shows that she isn't just a balls out comedienne but actually a really good comic actress. Season one was good, but Season two has been hands down stellar. I loved the last two episodes the most with this one being my favorite so far. The scene in the beauty shop was fun and I loved how Amira was just sooooo mortified. Also I have such a soft spot for Josh and am enjoying his and Tray's co-parenting antics.
  16. I think he did the physical equivalent of a 'hanging up on you' move that someone would do on a phone call without saying goodbye. Which is rude and dismissive. At the very least she is supposed to be a woman he cares for. If he can just turn heel and dismiss her so easily over a change of heart for a decision that wasn't even made in concrete based on a suggestion made on the fly, then it is a definite red flag. It is typical gas lighting behavior. She was making a case for helping a person with their cancer, her renewed love for practicing medicine and not just being a medical talking head on chat shows, and giving back to the person that made her realize that. In addition she had agreed with Panthaki that his position in their medical debate was the stronger one and that hers was the one that was flawed. She was making her case on both the medical merits and wanting to be on hand to save the life of a person who was important to her, and by gathering his toys and leaving he made it about his hurt feelings.
  17. Yeah, I hated The Bold and the Beautiful. I was all about As The World Turns and Guiding Light though. My roommate at the time loved B&B and once in awhile I'd watch just to ruthlessly mock. For isntance, Brooke always whisper-talked. And when she said Ridge's name she always pronounced it Ridge-uh. And I wondered aloud if the Bells came up with the cast names while out on a nature hike because you had Thorne, Ridge and Brooke.
  18. Well it looks like I just dumped the Fox and O'Hare series. It was a series co-written by Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg. It is Oceans 11 meets To Catch a Thief with a little smidge of James Bond thrown in. The first five books are funny and clever and sophisticated. I gave up on Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series a long time ago because really I just didn't like her writing or plotting very much anymore. But this series was an exception and I had a suspicion that it was Lee Goldberg's influence that made it as good as it was. When the 6th book, The Big Kahuna, was announced, Goldberg's name was gone and her son was credited as her co-writer. I became very wary and took a wait and see approach. Well it seems my fears were well founded. The book came out this week and judging from the reviews in so far it is just what I thought. Apparently the characters are not recognizeable and there isn't even a long con in the book (which was the conceit of the the entire series yp to this point). Sigh. I still have the first five and they'll sustain me. But unless Goldberg returns, this series is dead to me.
  19. Aww come on. How can you not be moved by the sight of Max -- his withered (not really) form and his sunken eyes -- struggling mightily to push that box across an endless lobby! Ha! I think I actually burst out with a 'Oh come on!' with that that scene. Damn, Panthaki just abruptly left Sharpe's office without a word. It isn't that I exactly blame him since he believes she has feelings for Max. But she wasn't saying anything unreasonable in that moment. And she is the acting Medical Director now that Max has seemingly been sent home so it isn't like she can jet off to Europe and hang for weeks at a time. It feels like she dodged a bullet there. He came off looking a bit petulant. I don't miss Bloom but I have to admit that Janet Montgomery is one beautiful woman. Pregnancy really looks good on some women and she is one of them. I do think they went a little overboard with the family thing with Floyd, but darnit, I really like him and Evie together.
  20. That is a good point and I suspect you are correct. I am one of those who thought the scene was cringey but hadn't thought of it in that light. In the end I think the intention was good, but maybe the execution of it not so much. I did get a kick out of recognizing some of them right off the bat. I recognized Brandon the guy who got shrink wrapped in the Christmas present. His story just made my skin crawl because being closed up like that is my nightmare. I rolled my eyes at billboard lady though because she was one person who I felt no sympathy for inconveniencing and endangering people with a loaded gun because of her damned marriage problems!
  21. I had no emotional investment in Eddie's wife. So her demise just left me cold. She had already abandoned Eddie and Christopher once and was so spooked by the idea of another one that she was all ready to abandon them again. I did like everyone going to Bobby for counsel no matter the subject. From dating to pregnancy scares to complaining about Chim he listened and gave them all sound advice as he calmly perused wedding magazines. LOL. I also liked Chim' storyline in this one. I liked his quick evolution from hard ass captain to just finally settling into the role. I definitely see Athena and Bobby as a backyard barbecue wedding. I had one complete with a pool party reception in our backyard and it was a blast.
  22. There were two things I did like about the otherwise ridic M&M plot: - Evie taking Reynolds aside and warning him that it was all bullshit and seemed like he was going to be thrown under the bus and she had his back. Everyone else was kinda walking on eggshells around Max (although I loved Cadelario's massive side eye). Yeah, it turns out Max was only having a hissy fit and it wasn't some nefarious plan to feed Reynolds to sharks, but I really appreciated Evie's lawyer instincts and protective instincts coming out on Reynolds' behalf. - The scene confrontation scene between Reynolds and Max. It was well done and well acted and is one of the reasons I still enjoy the show. The writing and situations can be over the top and not realistic, but the cast is genuinely good and really rise above.
  23. From the article is sounds like Aaronvitch is going to heavily involved, so... excited?
  24. Actually, there was a mound of blankets in the bed next to Max when he awoke. I saw that mound of blankets and flash of blonde hair and thought to myself 'Hey wait... are we really going to see Gerogia?' I was sure she'd turn over over something. And then as the scene went on and she didn't even twitch, I began to make a bet with myself that she wouldn't make her presence felt and it wasn't her at all but a stand in actress who just made her day rate by being a mound of blankets. LOL. I weirdly found myself liking the Kapoor storyline even though it was ridic. And I applaud the show for finding a completely different way to Max insufferable.
  25. Y'know, I was ok with the Nate/Amaya romance not because I thought they were particularly great together or anything, but they sorta happened on the side and made occasional appearances. Basically it stayed where I think romance should stay in a show like this. The Nate/Zari romance is playing out rather juvenile and makes this feel like a CW teen show and not the DC Legends show I love. Say what you will about the Nata/Amaya doomed romance, it wasn't used as plot vehicle for the cast to prop it to an intrusive degree. I mean the idea that they'd make Nate/Zari believe Sara would send them on fake a mission just to hook them up and Sara being so determined to hook them up is just ...disappointing and not really worthy of what this show is. This was better than last week but not by a whole lot. I loved the Ray stuff. It used Ray, Gary's history, Nora, and Constantine really well. Also evil Ray can soooo get it! Even though I love dorky Ray! I also liked the Mick/Charlie stuff. Not necessarily because I liked that storyline particularly but because it gave Mick and Charlie something to do. They've both been wasted since the show has come back from the break. The 30s egg mission got good when Nick left and Sara, Ava and Zari were kicking ass. That is the Legends I love. Mona's hissy fit and almost wolfing out in public just because of a romance novelist's identity was just fucking ridiculous. I've gone from thinking she was just rather annoying to outright disliking her.
