  1. There is no actual reason the two stars of the show needed to be white.  I'm asking why the advertising for the show only shows white faces, you're needlessly explaining that the stars of the show are white.  Yep. I can see that.

Quantico has no problem selling its show with a non-white face, same with Scandal, etc.  Anyone would look at the ads for The Good Place and assume only white people star in it because that's the case with so many shows on American television.

    Quote

but the new wave of stars created by that more equitable casting have been getting those starring roles long enough to be the MAIN stars on the marquee. That's the part which can't be rushed.

The "stars" of The Office were all white, too - take a look at any DVD cases for that show.  Jenna, John, B.J., Rainn were ALL unknown actors at the time, they didn't carry any so-called weight like Kristen or Ted.  And I thought it was weird then that you would rarely see a non-white face on The Office DVD covers even though the show is populated by non-whites as well.  Seasons 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 - all white faces on the covers.  Another case of a multiracial show that hesitated to put non-white faces front and centre.  And it wasn't about fame or clout, at all, except in the case of Steve and MAYBE B.J. who was also a writer.  Somebody had ZERO issue giving those 4 unknown white actors a chance on a television show and zero issue putting them front and centre of its advertising.

LOST always had multiracial advertising and the show did well for itself.

I thought this was the Race and Ethnicity on TV thread....

I thought Rebecca finding William was a bit contrived (how is she going to explain the book of poetry?) but I was glad that there was more to the relationship between William and Randall's mother, and Randall getting his own name.  Speaking of which, Randall and Beth are so wonderful together.  More than them just loving each other, you can tell they know each other.  I hope it always stays that way.

Randall will surely figure out how he got his name after talking to his father more!  Then, won't Mandy and William's secret be revealed?

Edited: Since other posters have pointed out that Randall had Dudley Randall's poetry in his house, it makes me think that Rebecca came up with a lie to cover this all up way back when, to explain the origin of his name to him.

I wish they had given him another K name (Keith, Kenneth...there are plenty of them).  He was going to grow up feeling like an outsider in that family no matter what, and having the name of Randall just throws another log on the fire.

I personally really liked it!  The two Ks are related by blood, like twins, or they are considered twins right?  And the reality is that Randall just isn't.  It highlights his uniqueness.  Naming them all Ks almost seems to me like colour blindness or something.   I think it's better to celebrate and recognize differences than to pretend they don't exist.  Sorry if I'm being really clunky explaining myself.  Randall is part of the family but his own unique person too.  Plus it gives him a connection to his biological roots, his father.

I'm really really enjoying the show.  So glad I found it.  Episode 2 got me scared that I'd be anxious the whole time waiting for each episode's twist, but that whole issue was thrown out of the window Episode 3!

Also, maybe I'm seeing an inside joke where there wasn't one, but I noticed that the first name on the rankings list was David Arias. That is the birth name of Red Sox slugger and Boston sports hero David Ortiz, whose retirement ceremony occurred last week. I suspect there's a Sox fan among the writers.

    Mike Schur the creator

  4. Can someone do me a favour and go over that method again?  Counting numbers out of order?  How do you decide what order?  LOL.  Sorry I missed that.

  5. I hadn't been to this thread in awhile before today so I apologize if this was brought up.  NBC ordered a comedy ("comedy") about a Filipino mail order bride, then a lot of people protested and I think it's been cancelled.

So impressed with #AsianTwitter, they got Disney to back down on Mulan having a white interest, and this.  This is all in like the past few weeks.

(I see now that this was discussed.  This is exactly parallel to me appreciating the Filipino male character on The Good Place.  It's like him, and the characters on The Crazy Ex-Girlfriend that I've seen that aren't stereotypical, lately.  They're real, actual people and characters, and they just happen to be Filipino also.)

  6. I had no hopes for The Good Place because Kristen Bell and Ted Danson are the ONLY faces I saw in the pre-season advertisements, but I gave it a chance because it was created by Michael Schur of Parks and Recreation.  It is actually so multiracial, surprisingly.  Again, I don't know why they had to make the promotion for the show so white, front and centre.  (I guess Parks was like that at first, with Amy Poehler being the star.  It's like how Shonda Rhimes got so famous with Grey's Anatomy.)

I've commented in the show's thread about the Filipino male character, who I appreciate a lot.  If you get to the fourth episode, he's fully fleshed out, and I find him so non-stereotypical for an Asian character on American TV.  Kristen's "soulmate" is Nigerian and her closest neighbour is Pakistani. Every couple I've seen so far on the show is interracial.  And I'm not talking white with another race necessarily - just lots of interracial couples of different races. If any of you watched The Neighbors, the main family in that show was multiracial and it used supernatural/sci fi elements as this show does as well.

  7. It feels like this television season is way better than other recent ones.  I tend to watch a LOT of pilots.

I'm going to rate these new shows or pilots out of 5 if anyone's interested to read.

    Finding Prince Charming - 5.  I'm obsessed.
This is Us - 4.5.  Very likeable and fresh.
Pitch - 4.  Very likeable.  Zach Morris is an angry catcher.  I'm hooked.  I also really like Ali Larter and basically everyone in the cast.
The Good Place - 4.5.  When the show introduced the Filipino dude, THEN I became hooked.  At first I was really on the fence.  I'm excited to see where this show goes, now.  It's quirky and weird and original. I can only compare it possibly to "Pushing Daisies".
Atlanta - 4.  I always forget about this one.  I think because it's so dreamy and subtle.  There is nothing on television like this show.  The plot doesn't "Urge" me to see what's next, kind of how I felt about Stranger Things (no offense intended.)

The ones I'm not as Hype about

Crisis in 6 Scenes - 3.5  Saw the pilot. It's Woody Allen.  It's all dialogue.  Nothing happened so far, but I did like the dialogue.

Insecure - 3.  It was good, but so slow paced.  I found it relatable and compelling enough, I just felt no urgency.  I'll probably stick with it.
Notorious  - 2.5.  This is an average show, but I want to keep watching.  haha!!  I like Piper Perabo in it and Daniel Sunjata and I think I want them to succeed.  There's something kind of juicy and fun about it.  I'll SWI.
Bull - 3.  I really liked this one!  It reminded me of Lie to Me.  The first episode I was hooked, but the second was kind of just ok.
Luke Cage - 2.5.  No idea what to think here.  I love every actor so I went in wanting to like this.  I love Mike Colter and I loved Jessica Jones which preceded it.  Most of it didn't hook me, and then it was just way too violent for me at parts.  I have to look away from the screen.

Divorce - 2.  Blah.  It's miserable and kind of gross.  I love SJP so I feel like I'll have to try ep 2, but i'm not looking forward to it.
Conviction - 1.  I feel badly for the actress, because I assume she is talented.  Stupid show.  I felt insulted.  I dropped this one.
Kevin Can Wait - I couldn't get through it.  No thanks.  0

I still need to try Westworld and Timeless.  I just started The Night Of.
Somebody mentioned Secrets and Lies -- last season with Ryan Phillippe and Juliette Lewis was SOOO addictive I thought.  I'll definitely watch this year.  Juliette stays and Michael Ealy joins instead.  First 2 episodes were okay.
I think I'm going to try Marcella.  It looks like a female Luther.

Returning?  oh boy.  Survivor, Project Runway, HTGAWM, Younger, New Girl, Brooklyn 99.  I recommend "Younger" if you haven't tried it yet.  Light fluffy cute show for women who like clothes.

doesn't look like anybody mentioned this but did the detective show the bodie the driver's license first before showing the picture of 6 people asking him to identify nas?  i mean that's clearly leading the witness, no?

It was the fact that Bodie saw Nas in the police station and identified him there as the culprit FIRST before seeing the photos that was off.....  That's obviously not protocol.  I don't know the rules though, LOL.

I had instant sympathy and affection for Naz, especially because I teach college ESL students and have know a fair number of young Muslim men like him--shy, sweet, and sheltered. My heart breaks for him whether he's innocent or not. But I am not 100% sure he didn't do it. And at this point I don't think Naz is 100% sure either.

Nas isn't ESL is he?  He's American born and I went ahead and assumed English was one of his first languages, but perhaps I am wrong.

"Shy, sweet, sheltered".  I couldn't help it, that phrase stuck out at me.  Somebody I know who appeared like that AT FIRST ended up harassing me for months.  Just saying appearances of "shyness" or "awkwardness" can be deceiving.

I meant to say I would rather face the Red Sox. Because they're more familiar, we've beaten them before. I think our pitchers are better.

I watched Sox and Indians into the 5th or so, they don't seem to have any fire. Sorry to the Sox fans.

Thanks.  That was MY error -- sorry, that's what I meant.  yes, I was wondering why you'd face Boston.  I don't know CLE as well but I guess I'll learn the team soon.

  10. 5 hours ago, cleo said:

Yeah it’s a shame, I think they could really use Travis. I like Goins a lot (he is one of my many crushes across multiple teams) and will always remember him having the guts to get up and pitch in that 19 inning game against the Indians, but he doesn’t hit very well. I’m very thankful Carrera has done so well.

Hoping Boston gets a win tonight because a) I would rather play them than the Indians and b) want the series to go long so we have more rest than they do :)

Ross Atkins says things are looking optimistic for Travis to play ALCS.  They are not calling up Goins.

Why would you rather face Red Sox?  I'm much more scared of Red Sox's lineup, but I know them a lot better.  I think I have this idea that Jays and Indians are quite an even team because we played that 19 inning game -- although Edwin was kicked out of the game at its beginning and I don't think there's anyway the game would last that long with him playing.  Facing Boston these last few weeks I was convinced that they were better than the Jays - well in September.  Who knows what October brings.

(Corrected bolded.  Sorry - my error.)

  11. I just hate how so many pilots I watch are out of the Cliche 101 book. (I watch a LOT of pilots.  I've seen some good ones this season.  This one, however, hit a lot of cliche marks.)

    1.  Open up the pilot with a shocking scene.  (THC talking about shitting in the coffee grounds tin.)

    2.  Vomit scene.  (THC vomits more than once, too! Wow, how shocking and so cool....... No.  Been done so many times before.)

    3.  I knew that Molly's character was looking for a gun.

I hope the subsequent episodes are less cheap.  By this I mean going for low-brow gratuitous shock moments instead of earned, organic action or dialogue. I'm not too hopeful.  I love SJP so I'll see what happens in the next few episodes.

Liriano was taken to the hospital by ambulance. I really hope he's okay. The batter looked upset too, like no one really wants to see another player get hurt, or not most anyway.

That was the second most alarming hit I've seen, the first being the pitch that hit Josh Donaldson in the side of the face earlier this year.

Gomez on Rangers (the batter) says he's BFs with Liriano and they went out to dinner together after that.  Liriano is expected back for Game 2 of ALCS.  Seems okay with mild concussion.  Devon Travis is the questionable player with a new knee issue.

Was Texas the one seed in the AL?

At the end of the season, it was obvious how well Toronto was playing.  And that's all I will say about that to keep the jinx meter low.

September was a bad month.  I came in and posted about the horror show that was the first two weeks of September.  End of September got a bit better.  Last few games of September and every single game in October has been rocking.  Don't know what's going on.  Won't question it.

We have a lot of horrifying injuries after that stupid, stupid brawl with Yankees which a lot of Toronto fans blame our own team for.  Benoit, and Travis seems to be made of paper and glass and keeps having more injuries.  Just horrifying for us.  But after having been through it last year, I guess this does happen at the end of every season.  TBS tried to play up Donaldon's hip injury which is the last thing he wants.  He had a HELL of a game.  So did Martin.  So did Encarnacion and Osuna who have a hell of a game every game.

Bautista went 0 for 5.  LOL.  You could tell he really wanted to show Rangers up in his last at bat in the 10th.  In his interview he said "But I don't care, we won!"  LOL.  (Sorry, I adore the man obviously, and I've met a few of them in person.)

Thanks guys.  Just had to take a moment there.

Good job to Toronto sweeping Texas and both teams making it though without any brawls or suspensions. The Jays played it smart and didn't give them any time for fighting.

    Love this!

Boston to me obviously looked like the scariest team in the AL east.  I haven't been watching their games so not sure what's going on.  Kind of the mirror reflection to the Jays.  I should tape today's... Going to Canadian Thanksgiving dinner.

How is it possible to have a whole thread full of non stranger things watchers? It has to be a age thing. It's fine if you didn't. At this point, it's just weird to read about someone having not watched it or actively ignoring it.

The reaction to the show is very intense.  The people that like the show kind of in my opinion "go crazy" about it.  I watched one episode.  It was fine.  A few weeks later, I watched another.  I haven't continued (yet).  I have no urgency to binge and tell everyone about it.  Yet there seem to be a lot of fans that do.  My point is the range of reactions to the show is extremely varied.  Some, like me, are neutral.  And, according to your screen name, I'll assume we are the same age.

It's THE pop culture phenomenon this year.

Maybe, but as has already pointed out, you'd have to first have Netflix to enjoy it, and then secondly, actually think it's great.  I am wondering if there are other people like me, who saw it and simply didn't go nuts for it.  I even wonder if it's more a race thing, than an age thing.  For example, a lot of writers have pointed out how Baz Luhrmann's "The Get Down" is ALSO very nostalgic about a particular era (70s) and is ALSO on Netflix, yet hasn't received the same warm reaction.

Anyways, I REALLY liked the sketch.

Kate only had a few lines here or there in some sketches but to me everything she says is hysterical.

I expected a lot with Lin-Manuel.  People treat him like some sort of God.  The show was fine and so was he.  I expected a bit more.  I liked Jimmy and Tina.

Having the Hispanic cast member play an Asian woman and play it off like it's cute was incredibly moronic. Season after season, complaint after complaint, this show straight up refuses to improve on this matter.

  15. I must agree with Sai.  I had no problem with Lucky, probably because he was so attractive and spoke in such a sweet and gentle tone.  The one thing I didn't like was when he was so dismissive of the idea of Tasha's outfit possibly reminding someone of Jamaica.  He laughed as if he was some sort of expert on Jamaica.  But, the rest, I liked.

I DID like Alex's coverup and I knew Nina would like it too.  Why?  Because she likes anything that seems fragile.  She goes nuts for it.  Anything that seems light, wispy, fragile.  I'm not saying it's a good thing, I'm saying that it's her sweet spot.  His suit, however, I agree with some here that I hated the blue lines down the front.  Bothered me.  The rest, good, and it would have been my winner.  (Well, aside from Dexter's green monster suit, which I really liked.)

I'm glad Tasha was saved because I like her too much.

That's true for almost every ball park.

Yeah but are parks are full or near full for every SINGLE game since the Tulo/Price trade in 2015.  So that's a very big difference from many other ball parks.  Would you stereotype a town of 50,000 based on the actions of 1 person from it?

I think people's ignorance of Canada leads them to stereotype.  Would people stereotype all of America based on 1 American?  Would people stereotype all of New York City based on DONALD TRUMP?   No!  And NYC is 8 million compared to Canada's 35 million.

You're never going to convince me it's okay to stereotype thousands or millions based on the actions of a few.

Her comments were over the top and unnecessarily nasty.  Sometimes these judges go way too hard for the soundbite.  It used to be MK who would do it.  I was surprised Heidi had to go that far with it.  I don't know.  As a woman I didn't see any of that at all, but I guess I was really swayed by the editing.  Because her reaction was a shock.  It honestly seemed sexist too.  Like you need to calm down, it's just clothing.  If you see that in an outfit, maybe the problem is with you.
