  1. Not yet anyway, but I think it has the lowest ratings of the remaining 4 network soap operas. The only problem with this is, if they get renewed for another season (this is sort of what the hiatus is connected to, as I understand it—negotiations for another season renewal are starting; as of now, they apparently are far enough ahead in filming that they have eps they can run either until or through March), how many of the current cast members will actually not have a new job on another soap, or another primetime show, & will be able to return if they get another season? Some of those characters won’t be the same played by new actors/actresses.
  2. From Hawaii News Now: Anheuser-Busch Buys Out the Owner of the Kona Brewing Company I’m not sure what this will do, if anything, as far as increasing the availability of the Kona brand beers, like Longboard, across the Mainland.
  3. From CNN: Former Michigan State and Detroit Lions Wide Receiver Charles Rogers Dead at 38 From Packers.com: Zeke Bratkowski, Valuable Lombardi-Era Green Bay Packers Backup Quarterback Dies at 88
  4. To clarify: it’s moving back to its original FRIDAY timeslot, 9PM Eastern/8PM Central. Its ORIGINAL timeslot was Mondays at 9PM Eastern/8PM Central.
  5. It looked like it was their usual Kona Brewing Longboards to me; what I saw of the label looked similar. Longboards work because the series—& that part/scene of the ep—was actually filmed in Hawaii. But they also don’t work if Longboards aren’t sold in DC. Where would Steve have bought it (there were a number of apparently used bottles seen before Danny arrived & they drank their 2)? I don’t think he brought it with; not on the mission. Maybe he had Junior ship him some after he got back to Hawaii & Steve was left behind to wrap up whatever &, I guess/hope, take Doris’ body to Hawaii for internment. Is it bad if I say I kinda hope Catherine was Doris’ partner who got killed (they never did identify the partner)? I just haven’t liked her as much since she started feeling adrift after leaving the Navy & since she started lying to Steve when she apparently joined the CIA, whether Doris got her in or she qualified of her own volition.
  6. This may not be the same thing but, if you remember the Sister Act movies, they both changed hymnal songs so they were set to the music of secular popular songs (a song about “Santa Maria” I don’t know the name of) & they sang secular popular songs, some with words/meanings behind those words changed so they were talking about a relationship with God instead of a secular relationship between 2 people (I Will Follow Him); they also used the Janet Jackson song What Have You Done for Me Lately? to What Has He Done For You Lately? & used that to go into Joyful, Joyful in the finale of the 2nd film. So I don’t think their usage of the music they’ve chosen is too terrible. It also might show the church in question is a more “progressive” church than some others. Besides, like with the Sister Act movies, I think using modern music helps the product appeal to the masses (though maybe not that many masses, unfortunately—NBC didn’t order more than the original 13 episodes, apparently, so the show may not be long for this life). At least moreso, with all due respect, than something that was written perhaps hundreds of years ago & is always performed so it sounds that same way. Personally, I’d prefer to go to a church that uses modern &/or Contemporary Christian Music than ancient songs you can hear the dust on when they’re performed in the same traditional ways. I will agree to disagree on this if necessary.
  7. From USA Today: Rising Broadway Star, Laurel Griggs, 13, Dies After ‘Massive Asthma Attack’
  8. As @illdoc said, the 3rd McGarrett who had a bank account set up for them by Doris is Joanie. That’s Mary’s adopted daughter/Steve’s niece/Doris’ granddaughter (whom she obviously knew about, but I don’t think she ever got a chance to meet her since she was always going off on secret missions for the CIA just when you thought she might stick around awhile. They filmed at least the parts set in Mexico (& maybe South America, but I’m not positive) in LA before they filmed the rest of the episode or the actual 1st episode of the season. I think it was the only way they said they could do it, logistically. Depending on when Alex wrote the episode, Katrina Law (Quinn) might not have been hired yet. And if she had been, it probably would’ve been too hard to have written her in after Alex had already written the script & maybe submitted it to Peter Lenkov & the network for approval & the beginnings of pre-production. I don’t know that it was “stuck in now to try to build up to a potential series ending” either. Alex, at least, may be perfectly happy doing another season after this; especially now that the stem cell & other medical treatments he was doing before Season 10, for all of his accumulated & unrepaired stunt-related injuries from over the series’ length, seem to be working. Plus, Alex is getting to both write & direct episodes now, & he’s been given a Producer credit this season, in the credits that air after the main title sequence & the 1st commercial break. And considering Alex takes his position as #1 in the cast seriously, by agreeing to do interviews, & by appearing at all of the Sunset on the Beach season premiere events, & by appearing at most of the set blessing ceremonies at the start of each season (I think he’s missed a couple because he was still out of town, or hadn’t quite made it back to Honolulu at the end of a hiatus or 2), I doubt that’s just a “no real clout” position, like when many stars of other long-running TV series receive Producer/Executive Producer credits late in their series’ run—they get the title, & probably something of a salary bump to go with it, but they don’t have as much say about what goes on with their show as you might expect if they have a production-related title. I’m pretty sure Alex does have more of a voice in what happens with the show this season. Having those perks now is more incentive for Alex to stick around. The original version lasted 12 seasons. I hope they’re trying to arrange things so they run at least that long, even if, say, Scott bails at the end of this season (JUST SPECULATION... I DON’T KNOW IF SCOTT WOULD STAY, OR NOT, IF THE SHOW CONTINUES PAST THIS SEASON!). I think they might be able to make that happen, as opposed to going for a 13th season, to pass the original’s run.
  9. Regarding the bolded: Small point: In the Navy, this word “Seal” (or this word “seal”) is actually spelled SEAL, in all capital letters. It’s an acronym for where SEAL teams carry their missions out: (on the) SEa (using 2 letters of the acronym here), (in the) Air, (on the) Land. At best, Scott’s hairline’s receding; at worst, he’s losing his hair. He’s had issues with it since the show started, & you could especially tell it when his hair got wet in a scene. That’s why he wore that pompadour type style. It covered the hair issues fairly well. But they must’ve gotten worse over the hiatus between this season & last, because this season it looks like he’s wearing his hair buzz cut on the sides, but full in the section of hair that goes from the top/middle of his hair down to the back of his neck. I’ve seen other people wear that style. Most guys Of his age just give up & buzz the whole head. I suppose that’s a little too drastic for Scott & for Danny.
  10. Now I know why I didn’t see at least the 1st appearance by The Beatles live on The Ed Sullivan Show. In February, 1964 I was only 6 or 7 months old, depending on if they were on before or after the 5th of the month.
  11. You quoted me like you thought you needed to apologize for something. You really didn’t. Just saying.
  12. From USA Today: Robert Freeman, The Beatles’ Album Cover Photographer, Dead at 82
  13. As @Homily said, for those here who are too young to know about this, Topo Gigio was a mouse puppet who was voiced by a puppeteer with an Italian accent (so the mouse was Italian too) who appeared fairly frequently on The Ed Sullivan Show. That was a long-running variety-type show that aired on Sunday nights on CBS, back in at least the 1960’s & early ‘70’s. The Beatles (& I’m pretty sure Elvis, too) appeared on the program & made a huge splash. I think it was on in the hour when they now air 60 Minutes, or whatever comes on immediately after it. I remember watching Topo Gigio on the show, & I think comedy acts like Joan Rivers & Stiller & Meara. I might’ve also seen Shari Lewis & Lamb Chop. But I don’t remember seeing The Beatles. At least not live as it happened. I have seen tapes of that though.
  14. I really liked that Alex was the 1 to write Doris’ demise, if it had to be, instead of 1 of the other, usual staff writers—except maybe for Lenkov—who aren’t as “close” to the characters as Alex is, having been the show’s lead for all 10 seasons. I also like his directing style & think he’s a pretty good writer; if he decides he’s had enough of the acting once the show ends, he’s got either or both of those fields to make a pretty good (I think) living off of, if he wants to pursue either or both & not leave the acting/screenwriting/directing businesses completely behind him (after all, I think he’s said he’s also pretty good at construction, for example—he built a deck off of his bedroom during 1 of the summer hiatuses from filming; there was a pic of it with an interview he did, though I can’t remember where the interview was published—so he could possibly also go into construction work after the show ends, if he likes).
  15. I’ll bet the actress from that show—whose name I can’t remember just now—who wasn’t happy when it got renewed (‘cause she was in Crazy Rich Asians, which was a pretty big hit, & I think she was thinking about transitioning into movies because of that, but then the TV show got renewed & screwed up that plan)—is probably happy now she can go on to movies, even though it’s at least a year later than she intended.

  17. The article from USA Today doesn’t say much at all, but Popeye’s Chicken Sandwiches are/were apparently permanently back on the menu as of November 3, which was National Sandwich Day.

  19. Regarding the bolded: I thought Ginny was still just separated & not officially divorced yet.
  20. Regarding the bolded: He just turned 60 (on either October 3rd or 10th; I forget which now but 1 of those days is his birthday & the other is Janel Moloney’s—Donna on The West Wing). I don’t think that’s too old to still be really flexible. It’s not like he’s 80. I also remember reading he was into yoga back in those days (the TWW days). As I remember, 1 interview with him, or an overall article about the show/cast, mentioned him doing some other “equally impressive for his age” yoga position in front of the writer.
  21. From TV Line: First Photo of Matthew Rhys as Perry Mason in HBO’s Limited Series The photo is, of course, way towards the bottom of the page. The accompanying article includes further casting info. Matthew’s co-stars include such actors as John Lithgow & Tatiana Maslany (who won 1 of the Emmys Keri Russell deserved for playing Elizabeth). There’s still no premiere date for the show beyond a generic “(sometime in) 2020”.
  22. Noelani’s actually been the ME on the show since the beginning of Season 7. Max had breakfast somewhere with Steve at either the end of Season 6 or the beginning of Season 7 where he showed him a letter he was apparently about to submit saying he was taking/requesting a sabbatical because he wanted to volunteer with Doctors Without Borders. That set up Max’s eventual permanent departure at midseason of Season 7. They introduced Noelani at the beginning of Season 7 while Max was still on his sabbatical. Noelani then became a regular, as opposed to recurring, cast member as of the beginning of Season 8 after the other unexpected departures of Daniel Dae Kim & Grace Park (except maybe for Grace Park’s being expected, since they put out a casting call for a new female Five-0 team member at the end of Season 7)—I think you got that confused with when the character of Noelani joined the show. Also, Kimee Balmilero’s credits show she played a totally unrelated character, named Allison, in an earlier episode & season.
  23. Regarding the bolded: So far, it appears Masi’s appearance was just a 1-time thing. Yes, Max’s son is adopted; I’m 99.9% positive he actually said so in the episode, as well (he really couldn’t be anything other than adopted or a foster child, or living with Max under some kind of guardianship arrangement, because Max is Japanese by birth & his [unseen in this episode] wife, Sabrina, is white). Max & Masi Oka (who played/plays him) were written out at midseason of Season 7. But Kimee Balmilero/Dr. Noelani Cunha was first seen at the beginning of Season 7, as Max was on a sabbatical from the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office & volunteering with Doctors Without Borders—which is ultimately how he was written out; he found that work more fulfilling than the Medical Examiner’s job. I didn’t catch what they said about the deformed guy, but I thought—& someone else said upthread—he looked like the real-life young man whose life the 1985 movie Mask was based on. He had a craniofacial deformity. I don’t think having 2 different eye colors gave the guy in the episode any superpowers. As you said, there are people who have 2 different colored eyes in real life & they don’t have any superpowers. I think it’s probably just a genetic mutation or something.
  24. Grover’s wife is listed among the recurring characters who’ll be in the episode following this 1. Chi McBride co-wrote the episode in question; 1 of the plot lines involves Grover being happy that his niece (I think it is), who’s some sorta college athlete, is coming to check out the University of Hawaii to see if she likes it in regards to her athletic & scholastic needs.
  25. Does anyone really believe nobody told William Shatner he had to keep his C-PAP machine clean when he was told he had to start using 1? I believe he has to use 1; sleep apnea’s not just a “kids” thing. I just don’t believe he didn’t know he had to keep his C-PAP clean—& how to do it—until the So Clean device came along, like he says in the commercial.
