    NFL Thread

The sheer money grubbing audacity of it made me laugh, honestly. Of course, the NFL would try to find another way to get their cut. Such greedy bastards. One of the local DJs here made a good point, that they're only trying this "pay to play" tactic because they've gone in a more youthful direction with the halftime show, and they'd never dare ask Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, stars of that stature to pony up. Whatever direction the halftime show takes, someone's going to end up displeased, and it's not like there's this exhaustive roster of music superstars that everyone across several generations knows and likes, who hasn't done it already and isn't in the doghouse with the NFL (Justin Timberlake, though maybe they'll relent when he hits 50 or so). The other reports I saw this week were about Carrie Underwood. I would think if someone with country ties got picked it would be Taylor Swift since she's more mainstream with more recognizable songs, but her vibe might be a bit too teenage girl for what the NFL is going for at halftime.
  2. Even with a honeymoon baby, they got married in June. What happened to keeping hush-hush about the blessed event in the first trimester? Even those "heathen" celebrity moms-to-be who are {gasp} unmarried and pregnant tend to keep quiet about it until they're at least 3-4 months along.
  3. Another John Green book, Paper Towns, is going to be made into a movie due in 2015, with a lot of the same team who worked on The Fault in Our Stars and a supporting actor from the movie as a star this time. I guess that's as close as you can get to a series feeling with books that aren't actually related to each other. I wonder if Boyhood will end up not being on DVD in three months like most movies these days, but get re-released/expanded in the fall/winter first, to ride possible awards momentum.

I wonder how long we'll have to hear about how much the McIlroy/Wozniacki breakup ("After the invitations had gone out!") has done for their games. It's relatively fresh and not an uninteresting development, but it seems like the sort of thing that commentators like to beat into the ground. Also, Wozniacki's shorts at the Western & Southern Open are hideous.
  7. Vale. Different, but I like it.

Tony Stewart hits, kills driver in sprint car race:
  11. During an interview with Mark-Paul Gosselaar promoting his current show (Franklin & Bash), he was asked about the Unauthorized SBTB movie and his TV co-star Breckin Meyer went off about Dustin Diamond. MPG says he remembers the years at Bayside a lot differently than Dustin. For his part, Dustin is now trying to distance himself from the tell-all book that was a big source of the upcoming movie's material (and also admits to faking his sex tape).
  12. I don't have a copy of Outlander in front of me, but I seem to remember that upon Claire's arrival to Castle Leoch, proper eighteenth century clothes were found for her. The woman who brought them saw the bra and definitely found it odd. I can't recall if she just looked at it curiously or said something.
  13. The Rising covered in this book takes place in 1745. One of my favorite DiA scenes is Jamie's horror at seeing Claire's newly-waxed armpits and the idea of body hair removal in general. Hilarious how that was what convinced him that Claire could be getting up to worse things than volunteering at a Parisian hospital. Makes me wish we could somehow witness his reaction to modern day manscaping!
  14. The TV show leads got shout-outs in the book: a character named Heughan briefly appears and one of Ellen Fraser's middle names is revealed to be Caitriona.
  15. Other musicals have done that in recent years, at least at first (Sweeney Todd and Frozen are two examples). The studio wants to make the movie seem appealing to those ambivalent about the genre. Then, by the time the later ads/trailers reveal the truth, the hope is that the hype has sufficiently won people over to the point where they'd be willing to sit through a musical after all.

  17. Hmmm, what's the unexpected turn for Ben and Jessa?
  18. I thought that was her! I recognized the voice. Wubba wubba wubba! Overnight ratings news:
  19. Since you enjoyed Guilty at 17, you might want to try others in the "series" if you can find them (if one isn't streaming on Lifetime's site, it might be on popular video-sharing sites): Fugitive at 17, Betrayed at 17, Accused at 17, Dead at 17, Missing at 17, Stalked at 17. If you're into true crime movies, there are Rob Lowe's contribution to the Lifetime genre: Drew Peterson: Untouchable and Prosecuting Casey Anthony. He wasn't in Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret but the acting was better and it was more salacious than expected for a basic cable movie. In lighter real-person fare, William & Kate had bad acting, weak storytelling and was so obviously filmed in California. Total rush job made in time for the wedding a few years ago; Kate hardly seemed to sound British. They even cheaped out with the graphics, with the title card looking a good 15 years out of date.
  20. Is water wet? Lifetime's website has quite a few movies available to watch in full.
  21. There was already a Hercules movie this year (The Legend of Hercules). The new one has already made more but perhaps there's not a huge market for Hercules movies at the moment. Hercules and Lucy aren't that far apart on Rotten Tomatoes (both hovering around the rotten/fresh line).
