Yeah, the 1980s were 30 years ago, so it's very easy for me to believe that parenting techniques and approaches to health and behavioral issues have changed in that time. Sure, there were parents back then who would have tossed the cereal and organized family rollerskating nights. But there were plenty of doctors who thought heavier kids just needed to lay off the extra helpings and well meaning moms who figured the thinner children didn't deserve to be "punished" by having their normal foods taken away and turning them into carrot kids. Yes, there were parents who never bought sugary cereals, but the push to ban junk food advertising from kids' programming or not to have soda machines in schools or not have candy-based fundraisers for school and to have healthier options on fast food kids' menus...none of that started succeeding on a national level until much later than the 80s. Obviously there were millions of parents who were more relaxed and maybe less thoughtful than what would be the norm now, with regard to children and healthy eating. The idea of the actress playing Kate getting weight loss surgery in real life... How does that come up in the casting process? So awkward to imagine!

Sad to see Kevin's cruelty to Randall, but kids can be so casually vicious and siblings don't always get along, even well into adulthood. The boys being willfully fed sugar-laden cereals was such a striking "things were different then" moment, along with Rebecca's handling of young Kate and her weight. Now, a "good parent" would be more sensitive not to single out the one sibling by making it so obvious that she was on a diet. The family meals would be more balanced overall and there'd be a push to get the kids moving and more active. Nearly thirty years ago, though I think a lot of kids Kate's age had parents who meant well but ultimately exacerbated the issues.

That's the rule for the Pittsburgh Public School system now. It may have been different thirty years ago. I know where I live, the kindergarten cutoff used to go by the calendar years in the 1980s and it's been October 1 probably since sometime in the 1990s. I have older relatives who went to school in the same area and the public schools used to have half years, starting a new class of students sometime in January, in addition to September. Many kids ended up going to summer school to "catch-up" at some point, but some stuck with that schedule throughout high school and speak of graduating in the class of 1959½, for example (finishing in December). Eventually, the half years were phased out. American schooling customs can vary so wildly by region even in the same time frame, to say nothing of another era. I watched the pilot again and it really stood out to me how Randall had already constructed a narrative of what it would be like to meet his biological father, and didn't easily let go of the conversation he'd played out in his head many times before. He kept wanting to zig when the bio father zagged, like when Randall was rejecting any excuse for abandoning him as a baby and the father didn't offer any. I wonder if the confrontation had happened the way Randall imagined it, that he would have left things at, "Screw you!" and never seen the man again.

Jackie was asked about changing her clothes many times that day but refused because she wanted everyone to see JFK's blood splattered on her, to show the world what had been done to him. She still had on the pink suit when Air Force One landed back in Washington later that night. It was more about symbolism than lacking the opportunity/time to change. As for Kirkman's swearing in attire, IRL, I feel like a Chief of Protocol or Social Secretary type would have scoped the White House for staffers close to his size and ordered the nearest one to volunteer his outfit so that the new POTUS would not look like a schlub for the swearing-in photos/video. When the attack method on 9/11 was clearly by air, the Secret Service overruled George W. Bush about going straight back to Washington and had him flying to different locations in the country, escorted by fighter pilots. He did return to the White House but during the night, there was a scare and the Bushes were hustled down to the bunker from their bedroom, before Mrs. Bush had time to get contacts/glasses. During the assassination attempt on Reagan, before he realized he was shot, he thought the pain was from breaking a rib as Secret Service shoved him into his car. It didn't feel like the agents on DS acted with enough urgency/command in getting Kirkland out of harm's way, but it's true that the "A-list" and even B-list agents were probably all at the Capitol guarding POTUS, FLOTUS, VPOTUS, et al. I didn't buy that they continued to let the staffers mill around the first floor of the White House after they knew the Capitol had been attacked. The VIPs would be sent to the command center and the rest made to evacuate. -
Paramount released a new trailer mere hours after the divorce news was announced and the affair speculation was rampant. Klassy! I saw a Youtube commenters joke, "I'm starting to think that Brad Pitt won WW2 by himself." Heh.

Wait, Anika was in her third trimester? I didn't think she was so far along that she could give birth yet without it being a major ordeal for the baby. I hope Ghost Rhonda sticks around for a while! Jamal too scared to perform yet the show still works in the weekly Jussie Musical Showcase... I did like the song, at least.

I imagine that being abandoned at birth on a doorstep/in the cold/wrapped in a plastic bag/etc., with only the hope you'd be found in time, brings its own additional baggage. Maybe the family moved from the East Coast to Southern California when the kids were growing up? I handwaved the scene with all three babies in their bassinets as happening a few weeks after they were born. Since the show is jumping in time anyway....

The problem from a storytelling POV is that IRL, the entire flight was extremely short, everyone survived and thought Sully did a great job landing the plane. He didn't let instant fame go to his head, leave his wife for some hot passenger half his age, or have a secret double life exposed by suddenly being thrust into the limelight. The real story fits nicely into an episode of a plane crash docu-series but that's what, an hour with commercial breaks, compared to more than twice that much time for even a short feature-length film. Then add that Flight already came out four years ago, and it comes off like a screenwriter took the actual Miracle on the Hudson story and added all the personal and professional drama it lacked in real life. Maybe the focus could have been broadened a bit, to how more of the people on the plane coped, if their family/friends treated them differently afterward, or if any of them radically changed the course of their lives, after getting a second chance...but then, it's not a Tom Hanks vehicle called Sully.

I think William is sure to learn about how the 8th Earl really died and that his father is in love with his other father, the latter because Diana seems merciless that way. There was something about William hearing strange noises in nature sometimes...IDK if he's a time traveler himself, though. That would be rather much but maybe he's inherited Jamie's astral projection thing.

Nothing as big as "Ice Ice Baby", but... And if you're generous... He doesn't have an extensive catalog of hits so if he was going to dance to one of them, the biggest one makes sense, but is it all downhill from here with his DWTS experience? Give the people something to vote for, look forward to...

If a regular season NFL game is being shown by a cable network, it often ends up simulcast by a local hometown affiliate. The local station typically ends up showing DWTS (or whichever preempted programming it happens to be) at an alternate time or on a sister station. Vanilla Ice should have saved "Ice Ice Baby" for at least week 2, maybe he could have danced to his other hit(s?) first. Did Jana say anything about Gleb besides how hot he was? They do make a very striking couple on the dance floor. Gleb is married IIRC, so showmancing it up would be a bad look, to say nothing of Jana...

They actually pre-empted a 9/11 special I was looking to watch at 10 PM last night and went with live coverage of Hillary's health. I do realize that presidential fainting merits some media coverage, though this case does feed into a more unfortunate, sinister narrative. I don't really remember the tone of the coverage when Bush 41 fainted, though with Bush 43, it was fairly light:

I waver between whether the acting or writing on this show is worse...so many clunky lines delivered SO awkwardly! Because I'm twelve, I giggle every time JB mentions his load. The road trip with Annie and the roommate was the first time she didn't totally annoy. She wasn't whining and begging the entire time. They aren't going to hook up, are they? I wonder what the deal is with the mom and her trailer's mystery smell. Brock O'Hurn...completely obvious but I really don't care. -

Statham's international grosses are good for his starring roles, though not spectacular. I guess his movies do well with TV rights and DVD/VOD, to make sequels worth it. Back before the Blockbuster stores went under, you'd always go there and see yet another direct-to-video American Pie sequel with Eugene Levy surrounded by random no-names. Those probably cost a lot less than $40 million, though. Same. I'll be perfectly content not to hear anything new about Black Jack in the books, ever again. I've always supposed the figure in the square was Ghost Jamie separated from Claire during her natural life span, so he went looking for her when she was in her own time.

I watched Downton Abbey and one of the high-brow daughters has a similar arc, albeit in the early 20th century. I think that sort of story works if you buy that the person was a misfit in high society, was looking for a way out even before meeting the guy, or it was a time of major social upheaval. We didn't get much from Dottie's POV...they seem like a nice couple but not this earth-shattering love.

I really hate it when writers play that kind of game with fans: dragging out a would-be couple for years, to the point of exhaustion, or worse, the deliberate baiting of pairings that the writers have no intention to make romantic. It's so juvenile and petty and "of the moment" and IMO hardly ever elevates a story. Ten years from now when this show is being rerun/streamed/beamed to back of eyelids, the people watching will have zero idea about the fandom stuff that was going on as the show aired. I think shipping really flourished with the rise of the internet, because it gave fans a chance to get discuss shows together as they were happening and what might have been passing, private thoughts that never would have gone very far pre-web (i.e. "The Fonz has a crush on Mrs. Cunningham!") instead become a whole "ship" with shippers and fic and theories and expectations and for a certain percentage, obsession.
