  1. I've always thought that she's afraid she'll lose her husband if she "gets fat" after pregnancies & menopause. He may or may not feel that way, but it really does seem as if she believes he does. She was a beautiful young woman with a lovely figure & it's sad to see her become so grotesque, which can't be healthy. I wish that people who love her could get through to her, like an intervention with alcoholics or other addicts. More to be pitied than scorned, as my mother used to say.
  2. Here's the link. I don't get why she's appearing on Fox & Friends in the first place, but apparently she hasn't changed in the ways that truly count (chocolate covered bacon?!).
  3. You mean that Golden Rule thing? Sounds so simple, yet so few people seem to practice it.
  4. She also appears with Brian Williams on The Eleventh Hour, weeknights at 11pm EDT on MSNBC. I'm seldom up that late, so not sure whether she's a regular or just a guest, but she seems to be there often. I think she does a good job & is better with political news shows than she was on The View (probably much happier too).
  5. My favorite example of the confusion that can result from omitting the serial (aka Oxford) comma is this dedication of a young author's book: "I'd like to thank my parents, Ayn Rand and God".
  6. Capital punishment has always been legal under Calif law except for a brief period in 1972 (during which many death sentences were commuted, including those for Sirhan Sirhan & Charles Manson). In 2016, voters defeated the most recent of several ballot initiatives to outlaw the death penalty in Calif. And I don't think (but am not sure) that Calif has ever used the electric chair -- it currently uses lethal injection & previously used the gas chamber.
  7. Save some mint for tomorrow -- Kentucky Derby Day requires mint juleps!
  8. As a proud grammar Nazi, I appreciate his little language hang-ups. He doesn't like the term "infrastructure" either -- the guy can't be all bad.
  9. I met my husband's family from the Texas panhandle some 50 years ago & they all made potato salad with mashed potatoes & yellow mustard (plus chopped onions & sweet pickles, thinned out with Miracle Whip as necessary). I was prepared to detest their politics (& did, & still do), but promptly embraced their potato salad & love it to this day. Don't knock it until you've tried it....
  10. Peel the sweet potatoes & chop into bite-sized pieces. Melt a little coconut oil in a dark roasting pan & toss the sweet potato chunks in it -- roast (uncovered) at 450 degrees 15 minutes -- toss & stir, roast another 15 minutes -- they should be tender when pierced with a fork, but roast awhile longer if not. Remove from oven, sprinkle with a little coarse salt & a little Trader Joe's reduced balsamic glaze. Serve warm. I like them with a spinach salad that involves red onions, hard boiled eggs, & garlic vinaigrette.
  11. If there's a place on this site where you're allowed to tell the story of how you grew up, I'd love to read about it.
  12. Consistently, the best thing I've ever had for dinner or lunch (or breakfast?) is a 2 egg omelet filled with roasted red bell pepper (done ahead of time & stored in the freezer) & goat cheese -- serve with toast or English muffins if you want to. Unbelievably good -- make a few & store them in the refrigerator until you're ready to microwave one for a meal. I love them with just a little salt, but sliced green onions on top would be good, & mixing some dried herbes de provence into the eggs would probably be nice too. !
  13. This happens to me all the time on neighborhood streets early in the morning (when it's frequently still a bit dark) with joggers 2 or 3 abreast in the middle of the street. These are narrow streets with cars parked along both sides, so no room for me to pass the joggers. Sometimes they have their backs to me & are usually chatting, so may not be aware that there's a car approaching -- I hate to honk, but I'd hate even more to mow them down. I do observe the 25 MPH speed limit, so there's plenty of time for them to move out of my path (once they realize that there's a car driving on the street, imagine!). I assume they don't want to use the sidewalks because those are often cracked by tree roots, & asphalt is softer to run on, but choosing to risk their lives every morning doesn't seem like a wise option. At least they'll look fit & toned in their coffins. Hate to say it, but they're always women.
  14. I watched the maiden episode of her show on Food Network because I hadn't yet realized how badly she's faking her "lifestyle", & how many of her "recipes" are common knowledge to everyone born in America after the end of WWII. I was appalled & sickened by the scenes of cows being (in my view) mistreated, & that's the primary reason I couldn't bring myself to watch again -- by now, I fully understand that it would be a waste of my time in addition to an assault on my sensibilities.
  15. Who in the world would want to consult this guy as a physician? Wikipedia says he's a dermatologist -- what woman would be willing to remove her blouse for an examination by him? Good luck, & good riddance!
  16. I've never strictly followed a recipe, anneofcleves -- pretty much like Alton Brown's, with adjustments. Such as undiluted evaporated milk rather than cream (because it's cheaper), & powdered Coleman mustard rather than prepared Dijon (because it's on hand), amounts of everything to taste. And I do prefer English muffins to rye bread for this. Pretty much can't fail if you're suiting your taste.
  17. I've never had the Stouffers product, but I have made Welsh Rarebit from scratch, mixing Guinness Stout & Worcestershire sauce with the cheese, served over toasted English muffins (sometimes with a poached egg on top) -- the rest of the bottle of Guinness should accompany the dish. Good stuff.
  18. And I think she found Muammar Gaddafi "charming" or some such word.
  19. Hooray! And while we're on the subject of careful driving: this is duckling & gosling season, so drivers should be aware that mothers followed by strings of waddling babies (who are too young to fly) may be crossing roads & highways en route to water. I live in an area with lots of creeks & ponds & lakes, where the Highway Patrol is kept busy escorting these caravans to safety, bless them.
  20. It sounds like the cat actually crossed your path -- but at least you didn't hit the cat, right? If I were in charge, you'd get enough points for that to be lucky quite awhile.
  21. Yeah, who knew that the way to his heart is through painful pictures? How about all those abused animal commercials? And/or the pathetic bald kids in the St. Jude's oncology wards? Maybe The View could feature a daily Paula's Pathetic Picture & encourage the Pres. to save the world, bit by bit!
  22. I don't know about most places, but common law marriage isn't recognized by the state of NY (or Calif either).
  23. And for lawyers, POS means "proof of service", an affidavit or declaration signed under penalty of perjury stating that a party or witness has been served with documents. So when you see a court docket listing what's been filed in a case, POS will appear frequently & is not cause for giggling.
