  1. So maybe he really did believe that Pres. Obama wasn't born in America. Ignorant but sincere?
  2. My favorite omelette: roasted red bell peppers & goat cheese. Served with Triscuits instead of toast (because using the toaster while the air conditioner is running blows a fuse), followed by canteloupe balls tossed with lime juice & honey.
  3. I'm surprised that you still consider this person your friend, when she treats you with such disrespect. She sounds like someone I finally dropped because I was tired of waiting for her, & I don't miss her at all.
  4. It's not defamation, which requires publication of a falsehood. But if I make money by using something that belongs to you (your image, your words, etc.), then I should get your permission for my use of your property, or else pay for it. In general, see Calif law governing the right to publicity. I have no idea what the legal basis of her lawsuit may be, but the Calif statute's general principle seems to apply.
  5. Oddly enough, since I stopped eating meat & poultry 10 years ago, Spam is one of the few things I really miss (along with bacon & corned beef). And I'm not even from Hawaii!
  6. So she's the target audience for the Liberty Mutual commercials featuring people who don't understand how car insurance works! I've been wondering who in the world is that stupid &/or ignorant.
  7. Speaking of Liberty Morons (!), I just realized that Brad's girl hasn't been seen lately -- at least not by me, thank goodness.
  8. Cops. Who also refer to "an individual" instead of "a person", & say things like "the driver's head collided with the pavement & he became deceased". Language mangling isn't an innate skill, so they must take classes in it at the Police Academy.
  9. Heat wave here, so I had a root beer float for dinner last night. But my energy was too sapped by the heat to finish it, so there were leftovers & those turned into breakfast this morning. Not healthy, but so good I may do the same thing tonight & tomorrow morning.
  10. What kind of wine pairs well with lemon yogurt? Depends on what kind of chips, perhaps?
  11. Here in Silicon Valley, we have a lot of "ethnic markets" (Mexican, Portuguese, Asian, Middle Eastern, Russian), all of which have butchers -- not to mention a huge variety of meats, poultry, seafood, & many different cuts thereof. If you can find even just one store like that, you'll be set.
  12. My favorite cucumber sandwich is from Laurie Colwin. Whatever bread you like (my preference is wholewheat with seeds & grains), one slice spread with butter & the other with anchovy paste -- in between, thinly sliced unpeeled & unseeded English cucumbers (however many layers you want) & coarsely ground black pepper.
  13. She'll be appearing at the Gilroy Garlic Festival this year.
  14. Just wait until you encounter Canada geese &/or ducks escorting their young to water. Not only crossing the street (which takes awhile, since there are usually at least half a dozen or more babies & everyone in the queue has short legs), but waddling single-file down the road in front of you, with no room to pull around them. I do prefer them to bicyclists, which the law in my city permits to use the whole lane, so cars must trail them until it's safe to pass (because no sanctimonious smugly entitled cyclist would consider moving out of the way). At least the waterfowl are cute & fun to watch, which we have ample time to do.....
  15. So gratifying to use up leftovers & produce something good (not always, but often). I had oil drained from a can of anchovies, egg whites left from baking with yolks, a little cooked fettuccine, shoulders trimmed from red bell peppers before roasting, tail ends of onions, & tired garlic cloves -- they turned into a frittata of sorts, with grated Parmesan on top. Whatever it's called, it was very tasty (& pretty much free).
  16. The list of names at the end of Peacheslatour's post shows how omission of the serial (aka Oxford) comma can lead to misunderstanding -- when I read "Moses and Sylvia Plath", I first thought PW had included a token nice Jewish couple. But it is an eclectic list -- so diverse that it extends to another species with Moby Dick.
  17. This wouldn't work on me because I just want to wipe that stupid simper right off the Chevy guy's face & feed him to a pack of buzzards.
  18. Omelettes in bags is an old camping recipe that was popularized by Boy Scouts &/or Girls Scouts. It's easy & practical for a bunch of people whose only cooking facility is a campfire -- just boil a big pot of water & cook many omelettes at once, each prepared with one person's individual choice of fillings. Freezer quality bags are used because they're strong enough not to melt in simmering water. I'm not aware of definitive evidence pro or con about the possibility of leaching chemicals from the plastic into the food, but people who are concerned about that obviously should not do this. I've liked the ones I've eaten -- good texture that's not runny or tough, appearance like a fat cigar (which little kids seem to enjoy & the rest of us don't object to). It's fun under the right circumstances, but I wouldn't waste expensive freezer bags if a frying pan would suffice to make one or two omelettes (or scrambled eggs).
  19. I make smoothies with fruit & yogurt in a blender & freeze each pitcher-full in 1 cup portions. Each portion can be thawed overnight in the refrigerator & it's ready to drink in the morning after a quick stir. I agree that being brainless is essential for breakfast.
  20. And next Fri (the 26th), are 2 more: Jacques Pepin & Alice Waters (respectively at 9pm & 10pm, PDT).
  21. I've seen Duke's at Dollartree in Silicon Valley, small jar for $1, just the right amount & price for seeing whether you like it. I do, but don't find it much different from any other mayo (or Miracle Whip, for that matter) -- they're all fine with me. (I realize that I'm a Philistine about this subject, so no need to point that out.)
  22. Couldn't an old folks' home or soup kitchen use 13 apples (make applesauce!) & tater tots (serve with catsup!)? Green beans are vile, so I have no bright ideas about them -- but most other food can be turned into something tasty & nutritious. None of it should be wasted.
  23. Cats go crazy in the wind -- indoors, outdoors, pets, ferals -- all of them amok. Fun to watch, from a distance.
