  1. Baratunde Thurston (formerly of The Onion) has been hired as TDS' producer for digital content.
  2. Stephen's on the cover of TIME this week -- the story's just for subscribers, but there's a fairly lengthy transcript that's not paywalled.
  3. In Larry's defense, in the past, if the 11PM telecast was a rerun, the 11:30 one would be as well. I don't think there was EVER a new "Colbert Report" following a "Daily Show" rerun. So if you turn on Comedy Central at 11 and see a repeat, why would you stick around? It is interesting that Comedy Central opted to move "@Midnight" to 11 following the summer hiatus rather than "The Nightly Show," though. I think Comedy Central is going to give the Noah/Wilmore bloc a good long time to get established before anybody panics. Though the cynical side of me wonders if Trevor Noah taking over TDS would make it easier for them to fire Larry -- at least CC wouldn't have to worry about the optics of dumping "their only Black host."
  4. If you're interested in Scientology, this piece (discussing the media coverage that has followed John Oliver's televangelist segment) is a good read. (Though some of it might be a little "inside baseball" unless you're a longtime Scientology watcher.)
  5. Greg Poehler got a new job: I had no idea "DirecTV comedy' was a thing, but I have regular cable so I don't know what kind of exclusive stuff is available to DirecTV subscribers. Shepherd is quoted as saying of Poehler, “In my opinion, he’s one of the best naturalistic ‘everyman’ comedic actors in the business."
  6. Hanahope, you are not the first person to ask that question. Check out this report:
  7. It's definitely in the tradition of David Letterman... think of all the politicians over the years who proved they were "good sports" by doing Top 10 lists. And also in the bipartisan tradition of "Better Know a District." I'd rather see Jeb! as a guest on LSwSC than Donald Trump. God, I hope Stephen doesn't give that blowhard any air time (he may, of course, feel free to mock him in the monologue). Plus, there are just so darn many GOP candidates; I'll bet Stephen has a Democratic one on soon, it's just that there are so many more Republicans to choose from. Stephen King, Elon Musk and the Uber CEO are all great, interesting choices for the show's first week, IMO. I may actually have to tune in for more than just the comedy bits.
  8. Here's an article on the C-SPAN reaction to the "most patient man" segments (that's Steve Scully).
  9. I'm a member of Lambda Legal and I had been worrying a few weeks ago that after the Supreme Court decision on marriage equality, would people stop paying attention / donating to LGBT rights groups because they think the battle is won? I'm really glad LWT showed how much is left to do. There's a lot more at stake than just marriage equality, though of course that was a great victory. One issue that I learned about from Dan Savage's podcast is the horrible bathroom bills, which would force Trans people to use the bathroom of their gender assigned at birth. He was trying to encourage the news media to quit asking candidates if they'd attend a gay wedding and start asking them where they think Caitlin Jenner (a Republican!) should pee.
  10. To me, the greatest example of what can happen when guests mingle is the time Norm MacDonald hung around while Conan was interviewing Courtney Thorne-Smith on the old NBC "Late Night" show. This is one of the funniest clips ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F6dXcW-_Fc Jimmy Kimmel used to have multiple guests on, but I don't think he does anymore (I haven't watched it in a while). I remember once Regis Philbin and Jordana Brewster were on, and Regis wound up chewing Jordana's gum. Of course, a lot of the big stars (and their publicists) don't WANT unpredictability... that's how you wind up with the ultimate stage-managed, pre-approved segments like Tom Cruise's "for God's sake don't ask about Scientology" appearances in advance of the latest "Mission Impossible."
  11. The only disappointment was that the "extended, uncensored" version on the web site/app was only 23 minutes long. Usually there's at least five minutes of extra footage in the Thursday shows. Maybe they were just keeping it tight in anticipation of their upcoming break.
  12. Wasn't it the young Asian woman (Sierra Katow) who was from Harvard Lampoon? I was really surprised Ms. Pat didn't go through. I wish they'd picked her instead of Francisco.
  13. As if my sadness about Jon leaving could not get any deeper: I keep thinking about what he'd do with the whole "Deez Nuts" candidacy.
  14. I really liked Bridey Elliott. Found out after the show that she is the sister of Abby Elliott (formerly of SNL) and daughter of Chris Elliott. Hope she'll be back again. If @midnight could shake up its format to feature four comics, I'd put Jessica & Lennon on with the Sklar Bros. and then I could ignore that whole episode.
  15. Comedy Central press release: NEW YORK, August 19, 2015 - It's a time warp! On Tuesday, September 8, Comedy Central's Emmy®-nominated "@midnight with Chris Hardwick" moves to 11:00 p.m. ET/PT, followed by all-new episodes of "The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore." The series returns to its regular slot of Midnight ET/PT on Monday, September 21, following "The Nightly Show."
  16. Oops, I didn't see this on TDSwJS thread and just posted it to TDSwTN thread. Move over Bruce Springsteen, Kanye West is the new sound of TDS, I guess. (No idea whether or not Trevor actually likes Kanye.)
  17. New promo. I guess Comedy Central's shelling out the big bucks, since they're using a Kanye song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EagQVJuM-K0&feature=youtu.be
  18. It seems that he's been on once before: http://www.cc.com/shows/-midnight/guests/kyle-dunnigan The show has a pretty awesome database of guests. You can also see the "leaderboard" of winningest contestants (Funches is #1, of course!) There have been a few changes to this week's lineup: Mo 8/17: Jessica St. Clair, Lennon Parham, Bridey Elliott Tu 8/18: Beth Stelling, Sam Morril We 8/19: Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, Mamrie Hart Th 8/20: Natasha Leggero, Andy Daly, Derek Waters
  19. "The Nightly Show" has done a good job of covering Creflo Dollar but I honestly had no idea these other charlatans were still out there and the full extent of what this "prosperity gospel" B.S. is all about. I associated televangelists wtih the 1980s, the heyday of Jim & Tammy Bakker et al. Sadly, I suspect nothing will come of this piece (though I enjoyed it a great deal, particularly John's lengthy "correspondence" -- I'm glad HBO didn't pony up much more than $300). The IRS is undoubtedly terrified of taking on religious groups, and while you might hope the televangelists would be shamed by the attention, they're obviously beyond shame.
  20. Stephen Colbert Got 600 People to Participate in His Latest Promo
  21. Mo 8/10: Brett Gelman, Nat Faxon, Sarah Burns Tu 8/11: Steve Agee, Julie Klausner, Bobcat Goldthwait We 8/12: Doug Benson, Michelle Buteau, Moshe Kasher Th 8/13: Rich Fulcher, Janet Varney, Craig Rowin Mo 8/17: Jessica St. Clair, Lennon Parham Tu 8/18: Nikki Glaser We 8/19: Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, Jemaine Clement Th 8/20: Natasha Leggero (Then we get a long end-of-summer break... the show returns the day after Labor Day) Tu 9/8: Paul F. Tompkins, Andrea Savage We 9/9: Hari Kondabolu, Kyle Dunnigan Th 9/10: Steve Rannazzisi Mo 9/14: Seth Green, Greg Proops Tu 9/15: Justin Willman
  22. I'm nine time zones away from home so I wound up watching the final TDS via comedycentral.com. Luckily, I hadn't been spoiled much (all of my social media seemed to be about the GOP debate) so I had no idea what Stephen would say or that Bruce Springsteen would show up. I choked up at the correspondent hug, but the Springsteen segment just made me bawl my eyes out, especially the dance party. I didn't think anything would make me cry as hard as the Colbert finale, but obviously I was wrong. Thanks to everyone here, and at TWoP, who has gathered for so many years to share their thoughts and opinions, pro and con, on TDS. It's made it a lot more fun to share this with a bunch of fans as rabid as I am (I even took notes at the tapings I attended for taping reports... it's sad that they are gone forever, like all the other forum posts on TWoP). I'll give Trevor Noah a chance, but I doubt I'll be as patient as I have been with Larry Wilmore (whose show I honestly like a lot now, whereas for the first couple months, I thought it was a complete trainwreck). There's only one Jon Stewart, and I miss him already.
  23. Greg Poehler Tweeted that they're going to be available on NBC.com. (For anyone outside the U.S. who may be reading this: use the Hola! plugin if you need to get around geo-blocking.)
  24. Noah: "how are we going to bring all of that together looking at it from a bigger lens as opposed to just going after one source—which was historically Fox News.” Has Noah actually been watching the show? Jon's CNN-bashing has been just as epic as his Fox-bashing.
