  2. Wait a sec, so Channel 4 didn't lock down the contracts of the people who have done so much to make GBBO popular before they paid millions of pounds for it?! That's crazy. A show without Mel and Sue just won't be the same.
  3. I was considering sending this to some friends of mine who are avid bird watchers (they've traveled the world on bird watching trips), but decided not to -- in my experience, bird enthusiasts do NOT have a sense of humor when it comes to birds. I notice that the bird video has over twice as many thumbs down on YouTube as the Labor Day video, and that one has almost 3 million views vs. under a million for last night's.
  4. Right now Hillary is scheduled to appear on the Ellen Show on the 14th, and on the Tonight Show Sept. 19. It wouldn't surprise me if she sits down with Trevor sometime before Election Day.
  5. This is a bit odd, but... it's not the same Chris D'Elia! It's a different guy with the same name. It must be very confusing when Comedian Chris D'Elia is a contestant on the show.
  6. I think Candice was saved by virtue of coming in 3rd in the technical. I find myself rooting for her because I think if I were on the show, I'd react similarly when I screwed up, so I have a lot of compassion for her, and hope she does better in the future. Plus, she has an adorable pug and according to her Instagram, she fed him a dampfnudel!!!
  7. I think the next time the Sklars are on, TPTB really need to find somebody VERY high energy to go up against them. I feel like Esther, whom I've enjoyed on the show before, just got steamrollered by them. My husband also noticed the way the Sklars laugh hysterically at even the feeblest of Chris's jokes.
  8. 9/12: Tip “T.I.” Harris (rapper – promoting VH1 show “T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle”) 9/13: Danielle Weisberg & Carly Zakin (Co-founders and Co-CEOs of theSkimm) 9/14: Hannah Hart (author & actor – promoting movie “Dirty 30”) 9/15: TBA
  9. Big props also to the person who came up with the headline "Orange Tries to Woo Black".
  10. Friday, Sept. 9 Tituss Burgess; Jeff Ross; Adam Richman Monday, Sept. 12 Dr. Phil McGraw; Alan Cumming; musical performance by Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam Tuesday, Sept. 13 Joseph Gordon-Levitt; Actress Millie Bobby Brown; musical performance by The Head and The Heart Wednesday, Sept. 14 Emma Roberts; Allen Iverson; Rachel Maddow Thursday, Sept. 15 Tracee Ellis Ross; Andrew Rannells; musical performance by Phantogram
  11. Thanks for the replies! My mom thinks it's because there's a difference between British "self raising flour" (called for in both recipes) and U.S. "self rising flour." She made the lemon drizzle cake and it turned out perfectly. She's coming out to visit me next month, so I figure we'll bake some things together and I'll try to learn from her!
  12. 13. And here they are! 9/6: Jeff Ross (comedian - promoting Comedy Central Special "Jeff Ross Roasts Cops") 9/7: Ava DuVernay (creator & executive producer of "Queen Sugar") 9/8: Howard Schultz (Starbucks CEO)
  14. The guests for next week haven't been announced yet -- I'll post 'em when I get 'em -- but here's some good news for those of you complaining about too many summer vacation weeks:
  15. Wednesday, Aug. 31 Christian Slater; Congressman John Lewis; Actor Chris Geere Thursday, Sept. 1 Larry Wilmore; Chris Noth; musical performance by Sampha Friday, Sept. 2 Anna Gunn; John Dickerson, host of CBS’ “Face The Nation”; Inventor Simone Giertz Monday, Sept. 5 Will Smith; Logan Lerman; musical performance by Tony Bennett (OAD: 8/2/16) Tuesday, Sept. 6 Harry Connick Jr.; Ava DuVernay; musical performance by Grouplove Wednesday, Sept. 7 Whoopi Goldberg; Regina Hall; Captain Sully Sullenberger Thursday, Sept. 8 Jessica Alba; Bradley Whitford; musical performance by Travis Scott
  16. Calling all bakers! I am the sort of person who only made cakes from a mix until I started watching this show. Recently, I've tried making Mary Berry's Victoria sponge and lemon drizzle cake, and while they TASTE great, they both "slump" in the middle. What am I doing wrong? I've used very fresh ingredients (I saw online that too-old baking powder could be a culprit) and have measured the ingredients very carefully using a scale.
  17. Larry is scheduled to be a guest on "Late Show with Stephen Colbert" next week, Sept. 1.
  18. Hearst Castle is in danger from the Chimney Fire. It remains closed to the public. (I realize the Hearst Castle is now a historic landmark and not a family home, but it was built by Lydia's great-grandfather.) I've always wanted to visit as I love historic homes, so I hope things turn out OK! Lydia's dress was very pretty.
  19. I saw an independent film called "Don't Think Twice" today and part of it is set at a comedy show that is based on "Saturday Night Live." At one point there is a scene in the office of the "Lorne Michaels" character and he has several Emmys on a shelf. During the end credits, there's a "thank you" to Rory Albanese for letting the filmmakers borrow his Emmys. (He won them for "The Daily Show" and not "Nightly," though I think "TNS" surely deserved some Emmy love as well!)
  20. My sense was that Jon was speaking as much about the staff of TNS as he was about the viewers of the show. And I think he's right -- the young on-air talent like Grace, Franchesca, and even Ricky no doubt learned a lot from Larry and considered him a mentor of sorts, and I'm sure so did the behind-the-scenes folk. They will go on to create their own projects now and some of them will undoubtedly be in the spirit of TNS. Some will most likely join the staffs of other comedy TV shows and bring along their experience of what worked & what didn't. I'm going to keep following my favorites on social media to see what they'll do next. My one disappointment of the final week: no last appearance by "Donald Trump." I'm going to miss Bob DiBuono's brilliant impression too!
  21. Aw, so nice of John to send Larry Wilmore some bubbly... via Instagram I always loved the piece they did together for TDS and wish there had been more.
  22. Gina was a contestant on "Last Comic Standing" a few years ago. The first couple times he was on the show, I did not care at all for Flula, but he's completely won me over. Now I am always happy to see him, and I was delighted that he won. I wish Rhys Darby or Jemaine Clement had been available to represent New Zealand!
  23. i thought Chris' hair was supposed to make him look like NBC announcer Marv Albert. As someone old enough to remember Yakov Smirnoff-mania (yes, at one point he was a household name), I guess I have to give him props for (a) still being around (b) being as hacky as ever.
  24. I watched every single episode. It was my favorite late night show. I loved the correspondents and Larry's dry wit. And as a middle aged white lady I feel I learned a lot from it as well. I'm not sure if I'm going to continue watching "The Daily Show," and "Late Show with Stephen Colbert" has been extremely hit or miss for me (more miss than hit, except for the convention-week shows, which I thought were very good). I know she's said she doesn't want to do it, but I wish Sam Bee could be convinced to do more-frequent episodes. Bleh.
  25. Mo 8/15: Flula Borg, Yakov Smirnoff, Maeve Higgins Tu 8/16: Jon Dore, Maz Jobrani, Gina Yashere We 8/17: Jimmy O. Yang, Milana Vayntrub, Francisco Ramos Th 8/18: @midnight Olympic Finalists I'm not sure what "@midnight Olympics" is, but I would guess it'll be another playoff with the comedians representing their countries of origin (Flula for Germany, Yakov for Russia, Maeve for Ireland, etc.) with the winners of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday facing off on Thursday.
