  1. This is the last week of new episodes 'til the end of summer break, according to my DVR.

  5. Also, I haven't seen every season, but this is the first time I can remember that there were no shots of Mary tasting one of Paul's recipes during the part of the technical challenge where they sit in the gazebo and talk about the food in question. Usually we see her sampling the treat and enthusing over how scrummy it is, even if it's something she'd never heard of before. I'm guessing she tried the flaouna and made a horrible face, and that's why it was left on the cutting-room floor!
  6. I was actually rooting for Pranjal last night because I thought Samantha spent way too much time deciding which clue to pick. At least Pranjal chooses 'em quickly. Not getting through the entire board is my #1 Jeopardy pet peeve so I like a contestant who prioritizes speed. Having said that, I sincerely hope we don't get any more runaways for a while, because they're boring. Considering how effective board-hopping seems to be as a strategy, I guess I'm surprised more people don't do it!
  7. This is a fun story from the Huffington Post about TDS' theme song, complete with an ancient promo for the first episode featuring Jon Stewart. (Of course, I have to take issue with the clickbaity title of the piece because OF COURSE I "noticed" that TDS' theme song is called "Dog on Fire" and was written by Bob Mould. But I will admit that I never knew how the song got its name.)
  8. Me too. I think the only thing that kept me from utter misery and despair is knowing that my sister-in-law lives in Pennsylvania and she's an incredibly smart, Hillary-supporting young woman who votes in every election. But the people they interviewed... wow. I hope Monday's show will be slightly less horrifying.
  9. Lots of updates: Wednesday, July 20 Tony Goldwyn; Mark Cuban; Lewis Black; Wyclef Jean sitting in with Jon Batiste and Stay Human (n- LIVE broadcast ET/delayed PT) Thursday, July 21 Senator Elizabeth Warren; Billy Eichner; stand-up comedy performance by Cory Kahaney (n- LIVE broadcast ET/delayed PT) Friday, July 22 Jennifer Saunders; a look back at the wild week at the RNC; unseen footage from Cleveland (n) Monday, July 25 Allison Janney, from the CBS comedy series “Mom”; Former U.S. congressman Anthony Weiner; musical performance by Ryan Adams (n- LIVE broadcast ET/delayed PT) Tuesday, July 26 Jeff Daniels; Comedian Bassem Youssef; musical performance by Aurora (n- LIVE broadcast ET/delayed PT) Wednesday, July 27 John Oliver; Jai Courtney; Radio personality Charlamagne Tha God; DMC sitting in with Jon Batiste and Stay Human (n- LIVE broadcast ET/delayed PT) Thursday, July 28 Panel discussion with Abbi Jacobson, Ilana Glazer and presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin; Eric Andre (n- LIVE broadcast ET/delayed PT)
  10. He does have Doris Kearns Goodwin on next week! Along with John Oliver and Bassem Youssef. I agree that the recent guests have not been particularly interesting, though.
  11. **shows from Cleveland/RNC** 7/19: Michael Steele (Former Chairman of the Republican National Committee) 7/20: Christiane Amanpour (CNN's Chief International Correspondent & Anchor of "Amanpour") 7/21: Alex Wagner (Senior Editor, The Atlantic) 7/22: TBA
  12. You guys, I WAS THAT KID. I wrote a pro-Reagan editorial for my local newspaper and volunteered at Republican HQ, and I grew up to be a Sam Bee-lovin' Democrat. As I watched him, I hoped that he would have the same trajectory. (Basically, it involved leaving my conservative hometown for a big east coast city and meeting people with different points of view.) So I would not be too hard on him -- he's just parroting the words of the adults around him. Having said that, I don't blame FF for giving him so much airtime because it is pretty hilarious to hear kids mindlessly spew Republican talking points.
  13. Heads up -- due to the party conventions, @M will be airing Tues-Fri for the next two weeks, instead of the usual Mon-Thurs. 7/19/16 Lauren Lapkus, Matt Besser, Dave Holmes 7/20/16 Ramon Rivas, Dan St. Germain, April Richardson 7/21/16 Jon Heder, Chris D'Elia, Will Sasso 7/22/16 Paul Feig, Neil Casey, Milana Vayntrub 7/26/16 TBA 7/27/16 Kathryn Hahn, Georgia King 7/28/16 Mike Birbiglia, Gillian Jacobs 7/29/16 Brendon Walsh, Jesse Joyce
  14. I can tell you what the schedule was like in the summer of 2012, though keep in mind that the conventions took place weeks later than they are this year: Weeks of July 2 & July 9: off Back on July 16; new shows aired through Aug. 16 Week of Aug. 20 & Monday, Aug. 27: off Back on Tuesday, Aug. 28 with 4 shows from the RNC, then 4 shows from the DNC Week of Sept. 10: off I think they do roughly the same number of shows every year.
  15. My contact at "Late Show" refused to confirm Jon's appearance, which I found strange -- I would bet that a lot of people (like me, for example) would be WAY more likely to tune in to Colbert if they knew for sure that Jon would be appearing. Luckily, I live on the West Coast so I'm sure I'll hear about it if Jon actually shows up.
  16. My cable provider (Comcast) has it listed as "A Very Special Full Frontal Special." There's a teaser video on the FF Facebook page.
  17. So despite the fact that a Jon Stewart appearance on Monday's LSSC has been widely reported in the press, my contact at "Late Show" sent out the following guest listings for next week: Monday, July 18 Zoe Saldana; Jennifer Saunders; Author Ron Suskind (n- LIVE broadcast ET/delayed PT) Tuesday, July 19 Keegan-Michael Key; Kathryn Hahn; musical performance by NAF (n- LIVE broadcast ET/delayed PT) Wednesday, July 20 Tony Goldwyn; Mark Cuban; Lewis Black; stand-up comedy performance by Cory Kahaney; Wyclef Jean sitting in with Jon Batiste and Stay Human (n- LIVE broadcast ET/delayed PT) Thursday, July 21 Senator Elizabeth Warren; Billy Eichner; musical performance by case/lang/veirs (n- LIVE broadcast ET/delayed PT) I emailed and asked if I could list Jon as a guest on Monday's program, and she said no, "the guest lineup for Monday’s show is as it’s listed below." So I don't know if the Jon thing was a rumor or what. If I hear anything further I will post an update.
  18. THE LATE SHOW will air live Monday, July 18 through Thursday, July 21 (11:35 PM, live ET/taped PT), during the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. Then, Colbert will return with another run of live shows Monday, July 25 through Thursday, July 28 (11:35 PM, live ET/taped PT), during the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. RNC Shows: Monday, July 18 – Thursday, July 21 The 2016 Trumpublican Donational Coventrump Starring Donald Trump as the Republican Party* *May Contain Traces of Republican Monday, July 18 Jon Stewart; Actress Zoe Saldana; Actress Jennifer Saunders; Author Ron Suskind Tuesday, July 19 Comedian Keegan-Michael Key; musical performance by Jenny Lewis and NAF Wednesday, July 20 Actor Tony Goldwyn; Actress Kathryn Hahn; Comedian Lewis Black Thursday, July 21 Senator Elizabeth Warren; Comedian Billy Eichner; musical performance by Neko Case, k.d. lang and Laura Veirs DNC Shows: Monday, July 25 – Thursday, July 28 The 2016 Democratic National Convincing A Technically Historic Event: Death. Taxes. Hillary. 19. I took it off my DVR season-pass list a few weeks ago and I don't miss it either (though I still keep an eye on this forum and was glad to see the "Hungry for Power Games" clip posted). I think the lack of an Emmy nom for someone who previously was a lock on getting nominated every single year is further proof that the show simply isn't working.
  20. Dark on Monday 7/18 Tuesday 7/19: Mayor John Fetterman Wednesday 7/20: Activist DeRay Mckesson Thursday 7/21: Author Salman Rushdie Friday 7/22: Former Ohio State Senator Nina Turner, Performance by Rapper YG
  21. I was curious about the name of the theater, having heard both Mann's and Grauman's, and according to Wikipedia, the official name of it today is the TCL Chinese Theater. So initially it was named after Sid Grauman, then Ted Mann, and now the TCL Corporation. Once again proving that "Jeopardy!" is educational!
  22. News about the convention coverage. Including: "The Daily Show” to a Produce an Exclusive Three-Part Special for Snapchat Premiering July 15, Launch on Amazon’s Alexa Voice Service (July 18) I barely know what any of that means, but I am old. And if you're in Cleveland... "Comedy Central will stage an activation, turning this 'circus-esque' political season into a fully interactive, comedic and social experience with games and activities for all ages."
  23. I think they were both through German. I found this online: The diminutive of the Yiddish fogel, meaning bird, faygele is derived from the German word for bird, vogel. That might have been why it was chosen for Jeopardy: not many people speak Swedish, but the odds increase that someone might have known it from German, Yiddish, or Dutch.
  24. As someone who was born in Sweden and speaks the language, I was pleasantly surprised to see the Swedish words category. I shut up and let my non-Swedish husband answer them. Luckily for him, he ran the category. I think the only tricky one was the $1000 clue, which was the Swedish word for bird (fågel). I am not sure that the context was enough for someone with no familiarity with the language to get that one, so I wasn't surprised it was a TS. Oh, and in case anyone was curious: Alex's Swedish pronunciation was NOT GOOD. Stick to French, Alex!
  25. High water pants are on Urban Dictionary, so they must be a thing. I RUSHED to my computer after watching tonight's show because I knew I'd find kindred spirits here in my annoyance with Matt. The only thing I liked about him was his gutsy DD wagers.
