  1. I was saying out loud, "Flight 90... two? three?" I just couldn't come up with it, and I'm guessing that's what the contestants were thinking as well. The $1000 potpourri question was very weird. "High-water, stretch & ditto are kinds of this" -- I am 99% sure the INTENDED answer was "marks," and I'll bet there was a pause while the judges considered the "jeans" response. It was a poorly written question. Maybe the writer had never heard of Dittos.
  2. Mo 7/4: Pre-empted Tu 7/5: Michael Ian Black We 7/6: Bassem Youssef Th 7/7: Xiuhtezcatl Martinez Then we get a week o'reruns.
  3. "Real Time with Bill Maher" has been on since 2003. I would imagine considering the amount of buzz Oliver gets, he'll be able to keep going indefinitely, just like Bill. (Were it not for "LWT," I'd consider canceling HBO once "Game of Thrones" goes off the air, but as long as they keep John Oliver around, I'll continue paying the extra $$.)

  5. I think the fact that she's doing it for Comedy Central should ensure it'll get on the air. She's a known quantity there and they've had several hits with young female comics like "Broad City" and Amy Schumer.
  6. The new champ reminded me of Kristen Wiig's "Dooniece" character from SNL.
  7. Grace is "Nightly! Nightly!" (the only TNS bit I regularly fast-forward through). Robin was on "@Midnight" on Monday. I thought she did a good job, but she came in third. Boo!
  8. 7/4: DARK! 7/5: Jim Gaffigan (actor – promoting TV Land’s “The Jim Gaffigan Show”) 7/6: Terry McMillan (author – promoting book “I Almost Forgot About You”) 7/7: Julia Stiles (actress – promoting movie “Jason Bourne”) Week of 7/11: DARK!
  9. I feel like she'd already "moved on" a long time ago. She's obviously been busy with other things, like her weekly podcast (which I've listened to a few times, but I think I'm too old for it -- I'm a crusty old Gen X'er and the millennial-speak sets my teeth on edge).
  10. There are some statistics showing that a lot of "ordinary" tourists (i.e. those who aren't interested in attending the Games) will avoid a city when the Olympics are held there because they think there will be excessive crowds, price-gouging, etc. For instance: British tourism slumped during London Olympics (Granted, a lot of this is anecdotal evidence... I'm sure you could also find articles claiming the Olympics boosted tourism.)
  11. She made a comment about Claire Danes, so I think she was parodying this.
  12. I'd like to see a piece questioning some more basic things about the Olympics -- for instance, why not just have them in the same place every year? It's just insane to have to create so much infrastructure for a 2-week event. If you don't doubt that a lot of it is only used for two weeks, there are tons of articles like this one online. The idea of having someone show up randomly to stand there and watch you pee -- or even worse, being the person who has to WATCH people pee -- is the stuff of nightmares, as far as I'm concerned. I'm very glad I'm not an Olympic athlete!
  13. Good interview with Larry from the Hollywood Reporter: Larry Wilmore on the Challenges of Breaking Into Late Night and Why He Teases John Oliver
  14. LWT on Twitter: "There's a new Last Week Tonight tonight, and then we're off for a few weeks. So...let's make this one count, everyone."

Brandeis: American Prophet" Tuesday 6:28: Jaime Camil, Actor, starring in Chicago the Musical on Broadway Wednesday 6/29: Samira Wiley, Actress, Orange is the New Black Thursday 6/30: "Soul Daddy Larry" show with special guest TBD I am ridiculously excited about another "Soul Daddy" show. The previous one is permanently stored on my DVR! Edited to add: Arsenio Hall will be on tonight's show instead of Mahershala Ali.

  19. It seemed to me that the Let's Do Anything sketch was blaming both sides for not passing gun control legislation, which seems like a case of false equivalence; obviously the GOP has been much more instrumental in thwarting any sensible gun regulations. Was hoping there would be some coverage of it this morning, but I couldn't find anything about it online.

  21. I took a college class that was entirely devoted to "Ulysses," so count me in as the one person here who has read it. Needless to say, I was excited to see that Final Jeopardy clue...
  22. True, thanks to random viewers posting it, but it's not on LWT's channel, which means HBO could have it taken down due to copyright violations. And people who only watch LWT by subscribing to the official channel won't see it.
  23. The kid's a professional. He's done several Broadway shows. I cannot believe that LWT hasn't put last night's NRA piece online! (The Brexit piece is up, but not the NRA one.) I really wanted to spread it around after today's Senate vote, but there are only "bootleg" versions on YouTube (which could presumably be taken off line at any moment if HBO sees them).
  24. Ack - my mistake - I was looking at NEXT week's "Last Week Tonight," i.e. June 26, which does indeed start at 11:15... tonight's does start at 11:03 (ET/PT). Sorry about that! And make sure your DVRs are set accordingly for the show on the 26th!
