  1. I'm relieved Suzanne is gone. Watching her was very akin to second hand embarrassment. She had no self-awareness at all. Also, I have no idea what baklava has to do with mountains. If I didn't watch food TV, I would have no idea what pho is (or how to pronounce it). I've never seen it on a menu around here or even heard it mentioned anywhere. So Giada had a point about explaining it as much as I hate to agree with her. I like Jason but I liked him better on the baking show where he was more laid back. He seems to be trying a little too hard although FN likes a big personality so he may be doing the right thing. The other contestants seem to like him so that's a plus. Every time I look at Addie, I see Chelsea Clinton. She can leave any time.
  2. I'm in Central Illinois so it must have been widespread.
  3. All I could think while I watched was that Richard or Ian (from previous seasons) would have come prepared with some kind of dough stamp he'd made at home. My PBS station had technical difficulties halfway through the Showstopper judging so I missed some of it but I'm sure I saw Paul take a knife and chop up the groom from the wedding scene so I was puzzled when I saw the groom intact on the table when Paul and Mary and Mel were discussing who would be Star Baker and who would go home. ???
  4. I know that. What I can't picture is how the hikers are filming themselves from the side as they walk along. They can't be using anything stationary like a tripod because they're on the move. Maybe they're just holding the camera out at arm's length but it seems like it would be awkward.
  5. I woke up this morning to find that my cable box had died in the night. I made a fast trip to the Comcast store and got a new one but I lost all my saved episodes including a lot of episodes of Master Class. The only thing that's keeping me from being totally bereft is that a new (to the U.S.) season starts tonight. Can't wait.
  6. That was a good episode. I liked both father and son although I preferred Dad and I also liked the guy of Asian descent. I would have been happy with any one of them winning. I am SOOOOOO sick of Daphne Oz. Little Miss Knowitall.
  7. I realized last night when I looked at my DVR that the above referenced episode with Shatner was a new one, not a repeat as I'd assumed. I didn't know they'd had him on twice. In any event, once was enough for me. I deleted it unwatched. :)
  8. That's what the son said. Dad clearly has more experience but I didn't like the way he was breathing. I hope the emergency next episode isn't Dad having chest pain.
  9. Whew! I'm a nervous wreck. That was quite the tense first episode. I felt sorry for the young brother who had to tap out but he really had no choice. That terrain is brutal and he couldn't go on with a sprained ankle especially since it took the fight out of him. I quite like the woman so far. She has a great attitude and she's a lot braver than I am. That shelter she made in one day was really impressive. I don't understand how the cameras are picking up the people hiking. Some of the shots are full face like maybe they're holding them at arm's length but some seem to be shooting from a distance. I also don't understand how they're going to find someone with just a compass if they don't have the coordinates for where their partner is.
  10. Agreed! I deliberately did not watch that rerun because I hated watching him the first time. The contestants acted like he was the second coming while I think he's slowly morphing into Jabba the Hutt.
  11. Nope. I didn't even bother with it. I watched the first two episodes which were both bad and decided not to waste any more time with this show.
  12. I like Kent a lot and thoroughly enjoyed last night's show. I was very happy that he won. I also liked the cute country singer/judge - can't remember his name. He handled his "duties" very well.
  13. I started to worry about the collective intelligence of the losing team when they decided to name their team Sinister Sixes or Sextet or whatever it was. It didn't occur to any of them that the name would fit only until they lost a member. The girl who was eliminated seemed very nice but I'm happy not to have to look at her bright green hair and nose ring.
  14. Thanks Gbb. I see the physical resemblance but OMG that ^^^^ is awful.
  15. Yes! That's it. I knew I'd seen her before but I couldn't imagine where. She had an unpleasant personality so I'm glad she's gone. Ditto Toya and the incipient bonfire on her head. I like Cory but he seems a little manic. I hope he relaxes and calms down. Addie is probably a serious contender but she seems very impressed with herself. Maybe I'll warm up to her as the show goes on but I don't care for her so far. Giada and Sandra Lee seemed to be competing to see who could be the bitchiest.
  16. I agree with almost everything above except............. I love Minions. :) I was relieved when the Eskimo guy made it through. It must be an expensive proposition for him and his supporters to come all the way from Alaska so it would be a real disappointment for them if he lasted just a couple minutes. I suppose the situation wouldn't be any different if someone came from, say, Maine but Alaska seems more remote. I'm assuming they pay their own way because I wouldn't think the show could pay for some and not others. Could be wrong. I wonder what, if anything, they do when someone with active bleeding falls into the water. There's probably no real danger to anyone else but I'll bet there's some health and safety regulation that requires them to change the water. I am female and I don't like the new rule that lets the top five females through no matter how they do. If women want to compete with men on an equal playing field, they shouldn't have special considerations. I wish they'd stop extolling Kacy. Yes, she is the only woman to complete a city final and that was very impressive but it was three years ago and she hasn't done anything noteworthy since. I hope Jessie Graf completes hers this year. She's the best woman out there IMO.
  17. I just watched the intro and was impressed by all the preparation. This must be an extremely expensive show to produce. Because what we see each week is so stark and minimalist, I hadn't given much thought to the extent of what goes on behind the scenes before. Based on the brief introductions, I like the father and son pair in which the son looks like a wild man but has a degree in water conservation or something like that. I haven't retained any names yet. Apparently, raccoons in advanced states of rigor mortis are still good to eat. Blecch.
  18. His name is Jason and he DID win the holiday baking show. He's my favorite too.
  19. I wonder how long ago this was filmed. Gordon made a big deal about being in his 40s but he turned 50 last fall. I thought the show was supposed to be "live." I may leave this show on in the background after MC if I have nothing else to do or watch but I'm basically out. It's pretty terrible.
  20. I didn't have a chance to watch this until tonight and now I think I'm exhausted from the tension and excitement. Jessie's run was just great. Even all the guys on the other two teams were on their feet cheering her on. She's terrific and modest about it too which makes her very likable. Josh Levin was great and I was happy for Drew. I also wondered about the way McCall had his hands on the body prop. I kept expecting a disqualification but neither Matt nor Akbar even mentioned it so I guess it must have been OK. I read one time, can't recall where, that the producers do show runs out of order to increase suspense and so on but I personally don't believe they "fix" the show. For one thing, I don't believe so many people would put in the work and dedication to training year after year if they didn't believe their own prowess would be the thing that pulled them through. After all the years the show has been on, competitors would have found out by now if things weren't on the level. For another, I think Matt and Akbar's excitement is genuine. They'd have to be faking it if they knew what was going to happen and I don't believe for a minute that they are. I'm really looking forward to the start of the new season next week.
  21. I don't think she's similar to Tregaye either except for sex and race and that was my point. I'm inclined to think that FN wanted to add a female of color to their cast of cooks/presenters and they thought Tregaye would be that person. When she didn't work out, they may have leaned toward Jamika whom they already knew and who would have been a big improvement.
  22. I loved Jason on the Holiday Baking Show but I don't remember him being quite so extroverted. He's a character but he comes across genuine and natural, not like he rehearsed folksy comments. I still adore him. Blake was cute but boring. It was pretty obvious he wouldn't last long. Toya needs to go soon. Her hair is ridiculous and she had a very unpleasant face during her critique. By the end of Comeback Kitchen, I thought maybe Matthew had learned a few things and toned down his smug act but he strutted on stage right back to Matthew 101. He has credentials and skills but he needs to grow up a lot. I like the young guy with the red hair and the big black guy with the biceps. The rest of them are still a blur. I despise Robert Irvine and I don't like Monti Carlo a lot better so I was dismayed to see both of them at the judges' table. They both seem to feel that their role is to be as picky as possible plus Irvine uses a tone of voice calculated to be demeaning. I hope he's not going to show up as a regular.
  23. LOL. Matthew has the training and skills to succeed but he's just not likable. I thought maybe they'd go with Jamika as sort of an upscale replacement for Tregaye who apparently hasn't worked out (which we could have told them) but she didn't do very well with her speaking bits. I wasn't crazy about either of them.
  24. See backformore for the perfect description of the show. Nailed it.
