  1. I'm pretty sure Mr. Tony's favorite is Don't Worry Baby.
  2. For those interested here is the interview with the real Katherine Johnson that I referenced in a previous post (she's asked about using the bathroom).
  3. Thanks for the tip. I have never heard about Google until you pointed it out! The more you know...
  4. I love Meryl but I thought FFJ was one of her weaker performances. For me, it's more of a problem that the movie had one trick and that was her terrible singing. After awhile it got tedious and I didn't feel there was much material there. It's one of those that I think would have been a great documentary but did not need to be made into a movie. Also, does anyone else think her nomination was a subtle FU to Trump? Or did the nominations have to be mailed in well before her Golden Globes speech? And yes, I feel like she took Amy Adams spot. I do wish Hell or High Water got a little bit more love. It would have been great to see either Chris Pine or Ben Foster get a nomination along with Jeff Bridges. Very happy for La La Land though. I'm one of the ones who loved it and think it deserves all the praise it is getting.
  5. One that always stays with me is The War Zone directed by Tim Roth. I saw it years ago and it still haunts me. I’m putting the scene(s) in spoilers because I basically give away the plot (and it’s not pleasant).
  6. I was hoping for Hell or High Water but since it's destined to win nothing I am happy for Moonlight.
  7. OMG I didn't even realize there was a The Help reunion going on with Emma, Jessica, Viola and Octavia all being there!
  8. To me there was perfection in the imperfections of La La Land. I liked that the singing and dancing were not perfect. I found it oddly charming but I can see how it could be annoying for some.
  9. I'm guessing so Matt didn't have to go against Leo for The Revenant.
  10. My favorite Streep film is Silkwood. Bonus points for an awesome performance by Cher.
  11. I have not seen The Crown but GoT had one of the best episodes of television I had ever seen last season. I would have liked to see it win.
  12. Really wanted either Evan Rachel Wood or Keri Russell for that one.
  13. I actually thought Elizabeth Debicki was the best part of The Night Manager. Was she even nominated?
  14. Why is The Night Manager getting so much love? I thought it was disappointing.
  15. I'm in the minority but think Manchester By the Sea is very overrated.
  16. I feel the same way about Hell or High Water (but I do love La La Land).
  17. Same. I have not had a chance to see this a second time but the soundtrack is tiding me over until then! I was not expecting to fall in love with this movie but I did. My second favorite of the year so far (behind Hell or High Water).
  18. I caught an interview with the real Katherine Johnson yesterday and at 98 she’s still as sharp as a tack! She had this great banter with the interviewer. The one interesting thing though was he specifically asked her about the scenes where she had to run across campus to use the bathroom and she said that never happened, she just used the ones in the building she was working. I was kind of shocked to learn that because it was such a big deal in the movie but I’m guessing the scenes were added to illustrate the struggle and barriers the women faced on a daily basis. Still a great movie though and all three leads do a wonderful job.
  19. I agree with all of your post except for the excellent performances part. With the exception of one exceptional scene by Michelle Williams the performances were not there for me. Nothing felt nuanced or natural. I don't understand all the accolades this thing is getting and the 97% at Rotten Tomatoes baffles me. It felt endless and very little worked for me. I will be greatly disappointed if this wins Best Picture. It absolutely pales in comparison with Hell or High Water.
  20. Ha! This cracked me up because I always watch the shows on the treadmill and so I'm right there with you. I was like "no Jeff, some of us multitask."
  21. I found myself rooting hard for David at the end and was disappointed to see him go. He really did play a great game. And man that bug bite on his cheek at FTC was so distracting!
  22. This feels like a weak year for movies. The only thing that has stood out to me so far is Hell or High Water. I've yet to see Moonlight, La La Land, or Manchester by the Sea though so maybe one of those will blow me away. As far as TV, I'll go ahead and say it, I don't get the Stranger Things or Mr. Robot hype. I watched both and was left wondering what I was missing. But otherwise pretty solid choices.
  23. A bizarre one. It actually took me out of the movie for a bit because I had a hard time understanding him and I could not find out why he was speaking with that accent. I have to agree with others who said they liked Sicario a bit more but this one still had some great moments. I did guess the reveal before it happened but it still packed quite the punch. I said to the person I watched it with that it felt like a Pro Choice/Pro Life subplot while at the same time not really making the argument for either side. Very well done.
  24. The best movie I’ve seen in a looooong time. It feels so authentic and timely and the acting is just top notch. I can easily see Jeff Bridges getting a supporting nomination. My only problem with it was that Jeff Bridges and Ben Foster tended to mumble their lines a bit. I know that was just part of the accent they were using but I really want to see it again with subtitles so I can pick up all the dialog that I missed!
