S01.E06: The Frustrating Things About Psychopaths
Surrealist replied to Whimsy's topic in Forever [V]
I hope the Frenchman becomes a regular presence on the show. "Adam" killing Henry was kind of eerie for reasons that other have mentioned here. And please, no talking about Abe dying. He's my favorite character. He'll be in harm's way at some point, but I don't want him to die. -
I watched Shane's movie (through a free link). Seeing the movie gives me a greater understanding over what's transpired so far on the show. The movie wasn't great. It wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen. It's cliche ridden and the humor is Porky's-like. Given the material, I thought that the actors playing Tori (Cherami Leigh) and Janie (Michelle Veintimilla) did a decent job. I also thought the actor playing Shane's father Ray (Bill Laing) was decent too. They're the only good things about the movie. For what it's worth, the most offensive scenes in the movie are ones we saw on the show. I thought it would get worse, but luckily, it didn't. Again, Shane's movie wasn't great, but I can see its appeal to a certain demographic. I can imagine that this demographic is why Shane's movie is ahead in making money. I will watch Anna's too. I'm curious to see how it turned out, despite her constantly running out-of-time and going over budget.

This is one of the most outstanding things I've ever read.
-
Sometimes I wonder if that's what's actually happening.

Anna and Crew weren't just shutting Dan out of production. I remember her getting pissy about Chris Moore being on set. She, Phil, and Invisible Victor are in their own little world. And even though this show is about the process of making an independent film, Anna's relationship with Victor creeps me out on some level. She's anal retentive, but he seems excessively controlling. Even Phil seems scared of him. That doesn't bode well for the long haul. Also, am I imagining things or did Shane's hair look much shorter in next week's preview? Has he finished filming all of his scenes yet? If not, he's going to have continuity problems. I doubt he'd be able to find a wig on such short notice that's as horrifying as his real hair.

Designers can be inspired by any decade they want when it comes to how they put together a collection. However, I think it helps when a designer has lived through said decade (whether the 60's/70's/80's, etc.) because they remember the original styles and likely would have a better sense of how to modernize those styles to fit what's current. I feel like that's the point some posters here (those who grew up in the 60's and 70's) are trying to make. Amanda talks as if she grew up in the 70's, but I'm pretty sure she was born in the mid 80's.
-
I agree. Every one of these designers has a viewpoint that's targeted toward a smaller group of consumers. Out of the people I know, not one would purchase items from any one of these designers' collections. I can't choose any one of the designers as having a broad-based appeal.

S21.E09: The Guy Who Wows Betsey Johnson
Surrealist replied to Tara Ariano's topic in America's Next Top Model [V]
Wait. Wasn't that the same show she was supposed to walk in, but was sent home immediately? Or am I thinking of another show? Also Tyra talking about ribs during their nosh session made me think of that one Cycle were she wouldn't believe that one of the contestants was naturally on the skinny side. Tyra couldn't resisting poking fun by saying the reason she looks good and has a booty is because she eats ribs. Anyone else remember that? -
The owner openly stated what we've all been thinking. To Chris Moore! You could tell he agrees with her, but can't really say anything. I almost fell off my couch when Shane told his girlfriend "I just really want to make a great movie." Yeah, uh, I think you're waaaaaaaaay past the possibility of salvation at this point. Unless Lauren can takeover and quickly remake a different, funnier film. I actually don't mind her. Also, I'm genuinely curious to know the percentage of crew members on Shane's film who don't think it's a steaming pile of shit.

Yeah. Perhaps Dandy is a psychopath. It's difficult for me to say, until we get more of his backstory. I kind of wonder if Gloria is kind of a Dandy-type character too. Again, we'll need more backstory, but she's definitely weird and creepy. I wonder if Twisty is both amused and creeped out by Gloria and Dandy. I think if I were a serial killer, they'd scare the crap out of me. Maybe we're being set up in the sense that Gloria and Dandy will be the most evil characters out of all of them. I'm assuming that there are parallels in the childhood backstories of Twisty and Dandy and they sense that about one another, which is why the former didn't kill the latter. As far as how Twisty chooses his victims, I have no idea. I keep looking for patterns and so far, I'm not seeing any. You're right that Twisty killed the boy's mother. Most of his kills are of men, but I'm not sure that means much of anything.

I might be out of my league here, but then again, I've never visited South Korea. Do they wear turbans there? I wouldn't have associated that accessory with SK. I get the play on "soul food" as Seoul. I shouldn't overthink Tyra. I'd probably wind up in an institution. -
When the psychopath thinks the sociopath is too out there, then you know there's a genuine problem. ;) I agree about the scene between Dandy and Jimmy. He felt rejected when the freaks wouldn't accept him into the show. I liked the comparison because it is spot on. You hit the nail on the head about what's bugging me about the characters and not being able to sympathize with any of them . . . yet. They're all freaks and horrible in their own ways, but we're supposed to feel sympathy for some and perhaps, not the others. I can't wait to see how the rest of this season unfolds. I want to know more about Elsa too. I'm on the fence about her because she's freakish like the rest, but hides it, and exploits their freakishness. Avaleigh: Crap. Now you've got me running off in a new direction. I had forgotten about the Mom's comment when he stormed off. She definitely knows he's off. She's given the audience insights with what little she says. I couldn't figure out why she'd give a creepy looking clown a ride in her car. What's stranger is that when she pulled up alongside him, I never thought "He's going to kill her." I knew she'd be safe, but I couldn't answer why I felt that way. My aunt has a theory that Twisty only kills men and ones he feels are authority figures. She believes it has something to do with what happened to him as a kid. Maybe. That said your post is making me rethink a couple of things.
-
At this point, I could almost see it going either way. Dandy told his mom that he's bored out of his mind, so helping Twisty kill people will erase that boredom. Given his penchant for killing animals and possibly hurting women (that felt implied by his mother) these things point to Dandy being a sociopath, as where Twisty is a straight up a psychopath. I'd lean toward Twisty getting sick of Dandy, but you never know.

I was crossing my fingers that Mirjana and Denzel would be sent home in a double elimination. I liked Miss J showing up for a runway teach, even though only three of the contestants got to benefit from it. I was really hoping that someone would fall on the runway. Boo. I, too, was shocked that the designer flipped on Mirjana about her on-set attitude and it didn't get back to Tyra. She loves those moments so that she can tear down the contestant at panel about having an unprofessional attitude. -
I feel the same way. Freak or not, Meep was killing live animals onstage. I can't drudge up enough sympathy for the character. Actually, I haven't taken to any of the characters yet. Kind of shameful how Elsa uses them to get fame for herself, even though she's a double-amputee and hides that from them. I think that's the problem I'm having. I enjoy the show so far. I get the overall theme that Ryan Murphy is addressing, but the freaks aren't exactly the most sympathetic characters either. Maybe that's another point Murphy's trying to make. We shall see. I'm interested in seeing how this all unravels and if my opinion changes. I hope that the young woman and boy escape or are rescued. Dandy's giving me the Ed Gein vibe. He was a serial killer in 1950's Wisconsin. He and his mother had a weird relationship too. I believe that it was Gein who inspired Hitchcock to create Norman Bates.

I did a double take as well.. She was reaching there.
-
Well, if that's the case, then I'm definitely tuning in. Maybe next season, Samsung could sponsor again and the models could step out of that "fancy" refrigerator and onto the runway. As far as Char is concerned, I meant she has a certain personal style that's pretty cool. She could try injecting a little of that into what she creates. I didn't assume Char makes her clothing, but she has an eye for color and details. Sorry about that. My post might have seemed vague in that part.
-
Yes. Amanda doesn't bother me as much now, personality wise, but I agree with Nina (ugh) that she needs to move away from the Boho hippie and elevate her clothing. They weren't telling her to move away from her aesthetic, but rather to make it less boring. I don't wear maxi dresses because I think they're unflattering, but I didn't mind her middle look. It's very her. Nina and Zac were right about how Char should design more like the way that she dresses. I like how Char dresses herself. She has a style and should try to inject more of that into her work. Maybe it would look less mallworthy. I like Sean's minimal vibe because it's similar to my preferred aesthestic, but the fringe? NO. I think fringe makes an outfit looked dated. I don't know why Heidi likes fringe so much. She must be toking on some bad weed. Poor Kini, but if anyone can pull off great looks in a short period of time, it's him. I do think his looks came across as a bit too serious. I don't mind denim, but only in jeans. I think he should incorporate more leather into his collection. Nina said the same. Actually, now that I think about it, I'm pissed that this episode had me agreeing with Nina a lot.
-
I agree. If they made a Henry and Jo relationship immediate and obvious, then I'd be bored. The writers should continue focusing on Henry's (and even Abe's!) development. I wonder if the writers the decided to kill off Henry, they would do so in the final episode of the series.
-
I vacillate between whether Sterling is simply off-kilter or if he's suffered some sort of brain trauma. As much as he upsets the other contestants, he's probably the most capable chef out of all of them. I'm not sure that's saying much though. I'm waiting patiently for Jennifer, Roe, and Santos to get tossed. Even Steve annoys the hell out of me.
-
Since Chris isn't around much, Zachary Quinto is who keeps me tuned in. I felt secondhand embarrassment when I saw Zachary's expression while watching Shane in drag. Oy. Also Shane's hair and underbite piss me off.

Hollidaysburg and Not Cool: The Movies Thread
Surrealist replied to ApathyMonger's topic in The Chair (2014) [V]
Thanks for taking one for the team. ;) -
I feel the same way. It's not a unique concept, but I like that it's a bit lighter and more upbeat than other procedural shows. There's the looming reality (well, on the show) that Abe will eventually die unlike Henry. At that point, Henry will have lost his wife and son and will be truly alone. That fact looms over the show and keeps it from being too upbeat (not that Judd Hirsch is at death's door). I don't know if I'm making sense. Anyway, I enjoy Ioan and Judd's scenes together. I wish they had even more scenes together. ElectricBoogaloo: I grew up in a town with many Greek families and I always understood the pronunciation to be "yee-row."

Are all of this season's episodes going to end in "To Be Continued"? I'm not rooting for anyone. I won't miss Ashley. Every time she had a TH, I damn near fell asleep. Then again, that's how I feel each season, which makes me question why I continue watching it.
-
That's what I've been thinking since the first episode. It looks like a human scalp. Leatherface came to mind.
