Maggie was terrible this episode. I'd agree with that. I don't hate her in general, though.
-
It makes no fucking sense. Meredith could easily get another job at another hospital. Bailey isn't scaring anyone.
-
Bailey is the most insufferable, unlikeable character on TV.

Can I just say that that's the same run I saw! It was my first professional show I ever saw in Boston, and I loved it. I was a freshman in college. Ah, memories. Also, I totally agree with you regarding Denzel. I thought he did an excellent job, and yes, this is a great show as an actor.

Heh. I loved this movie, but I will gladly call out the screenwriting and sound mixing nominations. They are 100% bullshit.

S13.E10: You Can Look (But You'd Better Not Touch)
PepSinger replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in Grey's Anatomy
Okay, Shonda straight up took the last voiceover from For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is not Enuf. "A laying on of hands" is a part of the last scene in the play. I should know; I was in it. It felt like I was being hit in the head with anvils. -
Yeah, the sound mixing was terrible! I thought it was just me, but I never heard anyone else saying anything about it.

As an Alabama fan, I am sad we lost. That being said, if we had to lose to anyone, then I'm glad it was Clemson. They were worthy. Nonetheless, I'm sure the Tide will ROLL at next year's National Championship game. :-) Are there any other Bama fans here? It's lonely.

The Annual Golden Globes - General Discussion

I have only seen Isabella Huppert in The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, but I adored her in that. I must see Elle. STAT. -
While Nocturnal Animals *may* deserve a Best Director nomination, I'm not going to cry a river if anything related to it is not nominated. I thought the movie was terrible and offensive. I was too distracted by the bad writing to notice anything else. Also, if anything it sounds as if it should get a Best Cinematography nomination and not a Best Director one. Ben Affleck not getting a nomination for Best Director for Argo is just straight up bullshit. I forgot who said this, but someone said, "I guess the best picture directed itself!" Lol. Just ridiculous.

In August Wilson's century cycle, there is always a certain magical element in the plays. It has to do with spirituality in the black community. If you're not familiar with his work, I can see how that can be confusing. How are you FFing when it's still in theaters? It's not just Pittsburgh; it's the Hill District. I think that neighborhood has a distinct character.

It has been two weeks since I've seen it, and I can't stop listening to the soundtrack.

Well, I think the issue with this movie is that there really aren't any "supporting" roles other than Keith (Legend). Emma and Ryan are clearly the leads (first tier), and everyone else essentially has minor roles (third tier, fourth tier, etc...). Keith is really the only second tier character in the movie. When you look at it that way, it does seem that they at least made some effort to add color to the cast where they could (Keith, jazz restaurant patrons, musicians, couple dancing on board walk, one of the casting directors). Now, if this movie had a ton of legitimate supporting characters who were all white, then I would be more sympathetic to the "faux diversity" sentiment because there would clearly be meaty roles that didn't go to actors of color. I hope this makes sense. Edit: Also, at the end of the movie, I *think* Stone, Gosling, and Legend were the only people who received their own title cards, which adds to my argument.
-
Yeah, the argument between Sebastian and John Legend's character comes off more as having a difference of opinion about the type of jazz. He's not whitesplaining anything. Whoever said that is misinterpreting the movie, IMO. As far as Sebastian "mansplaining," he's not really doing that. Mia has next to zero knowledge about jazz. I'd understand that claim if Mia had an opinion that was based in facts and had more knowledge about the subject. Calling elevator music jazz music? What? LOL. It also felt as if Mia conceded that she basically had no idea what she was talking about if I am remembering correctly.

Well, I am a huge Alabama fan, so I was thrilled with our win today. We could've played better, but we still got the job done. The blowout in the Clemson/OSU game is embarrassing, but I am glad OSU was shut out. They had no business being in the top 4, IMO. I don't understand the big deal. They shook hands before the coin toss. It's just making a mountain out of a molehill, IMO.

This is my point. If someone isn't going to tell someone to lose weight, then you can't tell someone to gain weight, either. I don't know where we a society have gotten this idea that it's okay to tell a skinny person that they are too skinny without a shred of medical evidence, but if the same were to be said to an overweight person, people would say it's uncalled for. It's hypocritical, and that's the point I'm getting at here.

Heh. I think one of the reasons I loved it so much was that it felt like a play, especially since I have seen it on stage before. Therefore, that wasn't a distraction for me. However, I do believe that in order to be a real contender for Best Director, you need to translate the material from play to movie. I can understand why no one is really talking about him for Best Director. That being said, I loved it. The acting is spectacular. Viola Davis should go ahead and clear a place off on her shelf for her Oscar. I also thought Denzel was excellent; he really seemed to transform into Troy. Also, August Wilson did a really good job translating his play into a screenplay; the integrity of the story was there. I didn't feel as if I were missing anything. I also thought the actor that played Cory did a great job. I hope to see him in more projects.

How is Emma a novice singer? Wasn't she in Cabaret back in 2014? Just curious, would you make the same kind of statement, albeit reversed, if you thought Emma were overweight?
-
I would say that Wild definitely revived her career. It wasn't a blockbuster, but it received rave reviews. Also, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. I think that she is just being more thoughtful about the work she wants to do, and it seems as if she is more in control of her career. I don't think the HBO series is supposed to indicate that she can't find worthwhile movies to do; the HBO series is just what she wants to do next.

What's wrong with the name Mia?

I LOVED this movie. I haven't felt that invested in a character (Chiron) in a long time. I cared so deeply about him it that it was as if he were real. He was a fully fleshed out character, and it was beautiful. Also, the attraction and friendship between Chiron and Kevin was just so complex and captivating to watch. All of the performances in this movie are excellent and award worthy. It was also nice to see a movie with an entirely black cast. The world didn't end! Amazing.

I LOVED this movie. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are an exquisite pairing. The acting, direction, cinematography, costumes, songs, score...it all just worked for me. I also thought the third act, with the Mia and her husband watching Sebastian play and Mia and Sebastian imagine another life together and the way they look each other in the eye, I teared up. That's when I thought this movie LANDED. Their eyes both just said "thank you for loving me and inspiring me to follow my dreams. I'm happy now, and I'm glad you are, too." They didn't *need* an ending scene. Yes, I do admit I am a little biased because I feel a lot like Mia right now -- struggling actor, working a job to make ends meet, while almost forgetting my dream. I also love that this movie wasn't cynical; it's a breath of fresh air and showed the importance of having a dream. On a diversity note, I thought they did a pretty good job of including people of color in this movie when they could. I was afraid this movie was going to be a sea of whiteness, and it wasn't.

Personally, I would be fine if La La Land wins Best Picture. Every element of that movie worked for me. I can't even think of a critic I have. It would also be nice to have a (somewhat) light hearted movie win just because I feel as if this category almost always go to the MOST. DRAMATIC. MOVIE. EVER. I'll admit that I'm slightly biased because Mia is me in a lot of ways (struggling actor), and this movie has stayed with me since I saw it on Sunday. The only other movie I would loved to win Best Picture is Moonlight. It's stellar.

Why Grammar Matters: A Place To Discuss Matters Of Grammar
PepSinger replied to candall's topic in Everything Else
LMAO. That's hilarious. -
Kate Winslet would've won that damn Oscar had Alicia V not committed category fraud. Kate's role in this movie is the definition of "supporting." She's excellent.
