  1. We went through this at UC Berkeley. Our stadium, built in 1923, has a major earthquake fault running straight through the middle of the field. A $330 million retrofit needed to be done, but the state of California had no money. So we had to raise it through donations and seat licenses and borrowing (and we're going to be paying it off for the next three decades). There was argument about not using the money for scholarships, etc. But think about it this way: This money wouldn't be going to scholarships anyway. On the other hand, these six or seven football games a year bring in about 60,000 people to campus (when the team is decent), something no other event will do. It gives alumni a chance to reconnect with the campus, and possibly donate to academic pursuits.
  2. He revealed it to his teammates a year ago. It was bound to come out, or become a rumor that dogged him. If he waited until he was signed to a team, then the team would be pissed off by this surprise, creating an uncomfortable situation. It's better to put this out on the table so a team would know what they're getting into. It would be cool if this would work out, though. Imagine Jerry Jones being a gay rights hero. In Texas of all places.
  3. College Gameday kicked off the season at a shopping mall plaza in Ft. Worth...that's what annoys me. And it'll continue like that with JerryWorld hosting big-time college games.
  4. Hmmmm.... http://grantland.com/hollywood-prospectus/the-battle-for-the-best-snl-cast-member-winner-will-ferrell-phil-hartman/
  5. I don't think this whole thing would've happened without her, so I think she was totally in on it. Kimmel is good friends with Justin Theroux, so they've vacationed together in the past in Mexico. If you see Jennifer Aniston's ice bucket challenge video -- posted here -- you'll notice it's on Jimmy Kimmel Live's YouTube page. Since he's closest to Aniston, I don't think this whole reunion happens if she wasn't game.
  6. To be fair, Labor Day is one of the biggest holidays of the year. (Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day after, Christmas Day and New Year's Day are the year's big holidays -- I wish MLK Day and President's Day was taken seriously as holidays, but they're not)
  7. Well, broadcast is starting to ape cable with shorter seasons or "event series." Anna Gunn, for instance, went from Breaking Bad filming 8 episodes in 1 year to Fox's Gracepoint, which is filming 10 episodes in a year.
  8. Imagine if The Sopranos, Veep, Breaking Bad -- all the great shows, actors and writers from cable -- never won an Emmy because they were relegated to the Cable Ace Awards.
  9. This was the first year I didn't watch directly in front of my TV. But I would love, love, love to watch on DVR time. But -- to me -- an essential part of the watching experience is Twitter (and, to a certain extent, live blogs). And there are like 150 tweets an hour during the Emmys on my Twitter feed. I didn't actually glue myself to Twitter. I would check it every half hour. But rather than take my laptop to near the TV screen and watch. I sat about 10 feet away on my desktop computer observing Twitter and live blogs (and this thread) while glancing at the broadcast out of the corner of my eye. I would, though, pause the DVR and go to the TV screen when I wanted to watch/rewatch something up close. Also, last year's eight Breaking Bad episodes were a tour de force of gasp-inducing great television. It was totally deserving. It would be ashame if Breaking Bad ended with only 1 TV series drama win.
  10. Is Hardwick Emmy presenter-worthy? I mean, is he really that famous? (yes, mulaney isn't famous, either. But at least he has a new network show coming up.)
  11. It's trending on Twitter how Kimmel showed up Meyers. How does that work? Kimmel and Meyers are on good terms (Meyers was very supportive when Kimmel followed him at the White House Correspondents Dinner host, and Meyers took time to congratulate Kimmel on his baby last month). I'm sure he got Meyers' permission to do that bit. Still, it's weird that that was allowed.
  12. No Ryan Seacrest! OMG! The Emmys are no longer even Seacrest-worthy! Seriously -- what's he doing? Idol isn't taping, right?
  13. Wow, it's so weird seeing Randy Moss and Joe Buck essentially part of the same broadcast team.
  14. Kenan Thompson: A Timeless ‘SNL’ Weirdo http://grantland.com/hollywood-prospectus/kenan-thompson-a-timeless-snl-weirdo/
  15. Anybody watching Hard Knocks? This season has been incredibly boring. Yes, there is no drama in the Atlanta Falcons locker room, but the whole point of NFL Films is they could turn a blowout into the most compelling game ever. They're relying on the usual tropes (focusing on a lowly guy's hot girlfriend, or the lowly guy with musical abilities). But nothing has been going on. Nothing. Last year's Hard Knocks was dull, too. But I attributed that to revisiting the well of a dull Marvin Lewis, who is adept at being dull on camera and making his team dull. Maybe Hard Knocks has run its course. Or maybe NFL Films is really missing Steve Sabol.
  16. Also, some SNL stuff in this Grantland podcast with Grantland boss Bill Simmons. They talked about whether Seth should've stayed on last season, the controversy over Leslie Jones and the missing videos from Yahoo's collection (due to music rights). Seth wanted to show his wife the famous Peyton Manning-Will Forte dancing sketch, but he only could find it on some Japanese website. (http://pann.nate.com/video/14899578) (One of my favorite SNL sketches is the 2009 season finale with Will Ferrell and they start singing Goodnight Saigon, and Norm Macdonald, Tom Hanks, Green DAy, Artie Lange, Paul Rudd are saluting Darrell Hammond after 14 years. Well, that sketch is not in the VH1 reruns of that episode. Though it does appear in the "SNL in the 2000s special, even when it's rerun on VH1.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLezNJbmncE
  17. Actually, the VMAs are on Sunday and Emmys on Monday. But, while the excuse has been that the Emmys were bumped to Mondays because of a Sunday Night Football preseason game on NBC, it was probably more likely the VMAs that forced the Emmys to move. (But why not have the Emmys this past Sunday?) Anyways, looking back to when NBC last had the Emmys, the 2010 VMAs were on in September while the Emmys that year were in August. And in 2006, the VMAs were on a Thursday in August.
  18. They talk Late Night, Late Night and Late Night. But if you want to hear him be asked about Fred, skip to 20:00. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLezNJbmncE
  19. I used to be pissed off that the Emmys were on a Monday (being a West Coaster and all). But I'm realizing that instead of the Emmys taking over a good chunk of the weekend, I could actually do stuff on Sunday (then watch the VMAs). Thank god I work from home and can finish early, though. I feel sorry for everybody else on the West Coast who will be stuck at work or in traffic during Seth's monologue.
  20. I'm getting tired of every morning, every media outlet embedding a Fallon clip from the previous night. I don't mind it, just not every freakin day.
  21. Seth_Meyers 12 points an hour ago Thanks! I really enjoy doing that. I wasn't something we planned as much as we discovered. They don't come easy every day. There are times when it's a bit more of a struggle mostly because my days can be the same in the middle of a show week. I do find myself trying new things in hopes of finding something new to talk about http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/2e3ohk/i_am_seth_meyers_host_of_nbcs_late_night_and_the/
  22. After watching Dave's Robin tribute twice, I'm realizing his final episode is going to be extremely hard to get through -- for me.
  23. I always assumed it would be Hammond...but can they get away with him doing the Don Pardo voice? Or would he do the Don Pardo voice? It's ridiculous that Pardo lasted this long. Maybe they'll go younger. Get somebody in their 30s who can announce the show for the next 50 years. Anyways, Pardo was fantastic: https://screen.yahoo.com/james-van-der-beek-monologue-000000339.html
  24. I seriously have been waiting all week for Ferguson to weigh in on Ferguson. (It must suck hearing your name repeated in such a negative light.)
