Mad Men Mafia

Introduction:
(Mod Note: Don’t expect much continuity between this and the show’s timeline. Some of you will notice that I am blatantly cherry-picking, but there are too many aspects that I like that don’t necessarily fit in a single season. And we love Mrs. Blankenship.)

Taking a long drag on his third cigarette of the morning, Don Draper looked out his window without seeing anything. He had a meeting with Peggy, Stan and Pete in thirty minutes and nothing worth showing. It shouldn’t be that difficult, but ever since losing the Hilton account, things didn’t feel right.

At least the clients they’d been able to poach from Sterling Cooper knew what they were capable of. There were rumors that CGC were making moves on some of gleanings, but the good money, and people, were with SCDP.

Across town, Ted Chaough was waiting to interview a young man he’d been hearing good things about. He’d never liked Duck Phillips (god, what a stupid nickname), but the man knew talent. Bert Cooper had certainly thought well of the man, and had benefitted from his finds for years. When they’d spoken, Duck had hinted that he might have something in common with CGC and was sending over an up-and-comer to prove his good intentions.

The intercom’s buzz broke through his thoughts and then there was his secretary, announcing his interview.

“Mr. Chaough?” The door opened and a young man poked his head through the opening.

Ted was surprised to hear his name pronounced clearly, unlike that bastard, Roger Sterling. “Yes.”

“Good morning, sir. Duck Phillips sent me over. My name is Bob Benson.”

Day One
Joan moved through the office, checking the status of various departments and projects. She was feeling out of sorts and ready to take it out on the first secretary to step out of line. At least Don was getting some work done. She gave herself a mental pat on the back for assigning Mrs. Blankenship to him.

Things were starting to pick up since forming SCDP. New employees were attracting a few new customers which helped ease the burden created by a lack of confidence shown by some of the clients that had been enticed over from Sterling Cooper.

In Creative, Stan and Peggy were arguing about the approach to take on the Heinz account. Pete had been humming around, pushing them to think beyond the last ad and consider new uses for the client’s sauces. Unfortunately, that had only inspired Stan to go off on an erotic tangent which Peggy was trying very hard to not laugh over.

Meanwhile, at CGC:
Ted Chaough knocked on the door of his partner, Jim Cutler. When he entered, he grinned and said, “Well, good news. Phillips got it right with this one. He doesn’t have much experience, but we can fix that easily.”

“Just what we need,” the older man groused, “some loser to train to our standards while that damn Sterling continues to make me look bad.”

“Don’t worry, Jim. I have a plan.”

In a dive, somewhere across the country:
A slender, middle-aged man sat hunched over the bar while nursing a whiskey. The bartender watched from the other end of the bar, hoping to avoid the dark cloud that seemed to be hanging over the man’s head. The ashtray in front of him was in danger of overflowing and strangely more discouraging to the few people in the bar.

While the man’s lips were moving, all that the bartender could make out was a muttered, “Damn you, Roger.”

It is officially Day. You have 48 hours to come to some sort of consensus, and yes, there is one clue in the story.

Not seeing a lot in the way of clues. Yes, the Heinz thing is interesting, but not seeing a clue in there. And yes, clouds could be suggesting @SilverStormm, but I'm really hesitant to point any fingers in the first round.

And in conclusion, I believe when next we see her that may have an announcement...

In other news...

Okay, so @TJtrack99 and I (his humble assistant) will be signing up to moderate the next game after the Game of Thrones Mafia that @egavasc will be moderating...The theme will be the shows of the Whedonverse (AoS, Buffy, Firefly, TBD...).

You are welcome.

Yes it does sound likely; except there is a teensy tiny flaw in that logic...in my experience, clues are never that easy c'mon srsly!...I bloody wish they were...

To illustrate my point; I feel like a real space cadet at the moment because I don't have a Scooby what the real clue is, so cannot even throw shade elsewhere. Hopefully a higher power will show me the way asap - 'I believe'.

Oh shit....I just re-read through a couple of times and picked up on this strange wordage: 'Pete had been humming around'...I have never heard that particular phrase before, so I thought I'd look up the word humming and this was one of the definitions I found...

'To emit the continuous droning sound of a bee on the wing; buzz.

Take from that what you will....but, if I die tonight, heroes, you will know why!

I'm not suggesting a lynch yet either, but I thought it important to share what I had found.

I think that is intriguing for sure...those of you with Night abilities should consider these kind of things...but I don't think anyone really advocates for lynches on Day 1 unless, like, the story said "And then he ran into the villainous Bachia Melly..."

Also I won't be around too much tonight - going out for a roommate dinner, and there's a somewhat important college basketball game here in town too. #beatDuke

Heinz was also a pretty major arc on the show, so it's not that likely that it itself is a clue, in my mind.

Yeah, I was coming in here to say that. Dougal and I are lead mods at Mad Men... not that it's a huge advantage in finding who are good and evil.

So far as the Heinz thing goes, it's exceedingly rare for clues to point to some private aspect about the player; they usually just indicate the name in some way.

Rarely have Day 1 David lynches gone well in my experience; we don't even know who all the characters in the game are yet. I'm Ok with discussing until Caprevasc call time.

Well, just thought I'd share what I've been doing.  I remembered that Peggy worked on the Heinz Baked Beans campaign.  So I went looking for competitors to see if any names of those might be a clue.  (None that I could find.)  Then I went to the wiki page for baked beans in general and there is a section about flatulence. (Still nothing)  Sometimes a hero has to research some unpleasant stuff.  Just saying.

I'm fine with following everybody else's lead re:  the David Lynch.

Ooh, I saw some of that game at the pub tonight. Bummer.

Speaking of, there's a semi-important football game on tomorrow, right Mark? I'm hosting a neighborhood party, so... whenever the 48 hours is up, pretend I called it.

So assume at 48 hours, whatever has happened is the end? I just want to be clear, that we should belly up to the bar then, since some sort of sporting event is taking place.

Me, I'm in the land getting a foot plus of snow between now and then. And no one has told us to stay home and not go to any sporting event parties......

Oh, after double-checking, 48 hours will be 2pm Central tomorrow. I'll be here to call it.

Never mind.

stacey, you'd be more than welcome at my party. At least, if it wasn't going to be hazardous to drive....

Cute avatar, Mark. I could add one of my cleavage peeking out of my 'hawks t-shirt.... ;)

Have fun at the casino and drive carefully, Machiabelly!

Okay, it's Night. I'm still cleaning and in party-prep mode (thank goodness for cold winter weather - we're storing beer on the deck! I'll put finishing touches on the story tonight (depending on how late the game and clean-up go) and confer with my co-mod about details tomorrow.

The bar is OPEN!!
