Ewwww.....no Detch or Kean! Egads.  Did you all forget that Ketch boinked Mary?  LOL I'm not ship shaming just saying that makes it a big fat no go for me!

I know we are getting off topic here but I have to agree with you on this. Besides, if I had a ship, it would be Destiel. I still believe of all of them Cas actually about the only one that actually cares for Dean, for Dean's sake, not what Dean can do for them.

I'm a Destiel shipper, (shhh), but I also shipped Dean with Benny and Donna...so....I'm equal opportunity there! But Ketch...NO NO NO. LOL

(Wrong thread? But where to post?)

I too think everyone can be free to ship who they want, as long as they don't demand it be made canon...

That's not what I have a problem with, but as others have said - Ketch?? Really? And my no-no wouldn't even be that he's a cast-off from Mom, but that he not only cold-bloodedly killed that Marga visionary girl, but also that he slaughtered a whole pile of soldiers who Sam and Dean had made a point to merely disable.

To me Ketch is truly a monster, no matter how much they try to white-wash him. Also that horrible fake-English accent.

I think he is a vastly more entertaining character than Mary, showed Dean some actual respect and appreciation and is played by a vastly better actor. He also never bowed down to "Chief". Win hands down.

I'd have enjoyed a "Dean caucht up with him on a lead" much more than a visit to the fortress of Solitude.

Again no one expects for any speculative ships to go canon but if we’re going to split hairs I’d have to say that there are tons of reasons why all of the popular ships are a bad idea. That includes Destiel, Wincest, Sastiel or whatever other ships. I can name a bunch of shitty things each character has done to another one to support why their ships sucks. I can’t believe that I’m defending Ketch of all people but it’s not fair to blast what someone gets out of fandom just because you don’t like it. JMHO.

I'll respond to the Ketch topic in the Dean thread to this thread doesn't get too far off topic.

To get this thread on topic, there was another moment in this ep where Dean reminded me of Michael.  It was just before he started to fight Vance, when he said "Lets Dance.  The look on his face, seemed a little psycho.

I know it was a throw-away line to set up the two brothers on separate cases, but because we don't have the best writers anymore, it was a very lame line. No, it makes no sense at all that Dean - good son or not, and Chuck knows he's a better son than either Mary or John deserve - would check up on Mobby. For starters, they're hunters who can take care of themselves - and one of them doesn't even like Dean (and I ain't talking about Bobby). But secondly, and more importantly, they wanted to be left alone to boff - and excuse me while I throw up in my mouth a little. But, seriously, what's to check up on? No doubt Mary in particular wouldn't appreciate it.  It was a dumb line all the way around and very OOC for Dean.

It would have made more sense to say Dean was out on a hunt, simple as that. But we can't have it be simple anymore because for some also utterly OOC and weird reason, no one including Dean is allowed to take a dump much less hunt without Commandant Samuel's approval - and that's a whole other problematic season 14 plot device.

I apologise if I left the impression that I was blasting anyone. I even said I wasnt ship shaming but rather saying what I didn't like about the idea of Dean and Ketch. Sorry if that wasn't clear :(.

Taking a theory to the spoilers and spec thread.

No worries, I knew you weren't blasting it, just saying you disagreed.  :-)   It wasn't meant to start anything, just more for my own amusement.

My post wasn't directed towards your post specifically; I'm sorry if it came across that way. It was more of a general statement.

I've said before that Dean is just far too zen this season with everything that is going on, but it stands out even more this ep because of what happened at the end of episode 5.  Shouldn't Dean be questioning what it might have meant? Or be a little freaked out that Michael might have done something to him?

This.

So much.

This episode felt almost nothing like an episode of supernatural to me. It was trying sooooo hard to be quirky, which doesn't really work in the show universe. Almost every episode Speight directs is an homage to a famous movie and I was trying to guess which one this was supposed to be. My best guess is Amelie, maybe? I thought the super cutesy music was just going to a joke for the cold open, but it just kept playing! When they actually revealed the fly monster I felt extreme second hand embarrassment for the show. It was like a prop from a cheesy 50's sci fi B-movie. Actually, that's a good description of the whole episode - cheesy.

Sam sat in a truck the whole episode (exciting) and i agree with others about the fidget spinner and reason he gave to continue hunting. They felt out of character.

I think FeliciaDay has made new!Charlie too distinct from old!Charlie. I know she has gone through a lot of crap that old!Charlie never did, but I don't really get any whispers of old!Charlie at all. They still had mostly the same life up until the apocalypse. I did like her speech about civilization falling apart, but Supernatural has always been a show more about how people and families fall apart (or don't), not societies as a whole, so the speech felt a little out of place.

Dean's response to being called old man was a single bright moment for me. I think that might be my favorite moment in the first 8 epsiodes of the season so far.

Sorry to quote myself, but it occurred to me that this is one reason why season 7 felt super off as well. The whole Leviathans plotline - funtioning as a agrocorp and preying on Americans bad eating habits? Methinks Gamble was really into The Omnivore's Dilemma (no dig against Michael Pollan - that guy is cool). Sure science fiction and fantasy is great at using fantastical metaphors to contemplate our selves and our civilization, but abstact societal commentary has never really been part of Supernatural's toolbox before.

I really liked this one. Admittedly, i love old school special effects and the fly people and goo were fantastic. I also love Charlie.

The dramatic coughing from someone who was running around the entire episode was ridiculous (and sadly also stressful for entirely unrelated reasons), but I really liked the meat of the episode and I was able to ignore the stuff I didn't like.

I know it's an unpopular opinion, but Iike the beefed up cast. I have always liked it better when the guys had a network.

I don't think it's all that unpopular an opinion that the guys having true supporting characters is a good thing. Unfortunately, AU people who are fan-service duplicates of actual SPN characters, and the teenage consumption victim/son of Lucifer don't qualify. There are so many characters they could have developed that were orders of magnitude more interesting. The witch twins, Jesse and Cesar, even Garth. Jody and Donna minus the Wayward Whatevers. But no, we get the nougat baby and a bunch of AU people who exist as red-shirts or to call Sam 'Chief'.

I also like the guys having a network, but IA with @gonzosgirrl that there were/are many more interesting characters.  But the main problem for me is that having a network implies that the other characters are for support, not taking over the main story.  They can have interesting and well-developed characters that just intersect with the Winchesters' story, not usurping the main focus and consigning the ones who should be front and center to supporting players at best, comic relief at worst.  We know Jody, Donna, Garth and even Jesse and Cesar have their own lives off screen, which makes them well-developed characters (unlike the AU group), but, sorry, until they get their own shows, they're just hero support.

Agree on all counts, and especially this. And considering (not really a spoiler but just in case)

Spoiler

one of the most egregious hand-offs of the main story arc to a supporting character in the history of the show is about to happen, I will never be able to re-watch S14 with any kind of unbiased eye. IMO of course.

Out of morbid curiosity and for background noise, I'm watching season 14.

And Kripke thought the Wendigo was bad?

This bug was a whole 'nother level of cheap B-movie horror. Especially with the quick cuts during the last fight.

Characterisation of Jack is so inconsistent. First, he doesn't know what courting is and then he charms the girl very eloquently.

Other than that, it wasn't completely terrible.

I was surprised that Felicia Day actually managed to play a different character.
