S23.E07: Emilia Clarke, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Gloria Estefan, David Tennant, Leon Bridges

The guests on Graham's sofa are Emilia Clarke and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, both starring in Solo: A Star Wars Story, Gloria Estefan, who discusses a new show about her life and music called On Your Feet, and former Doctor Who and star of Broadchurch David Tennant. Plus music from Leon Bridges, who performs Beyond.

I was never into Gloria Estefan, but after seeing her on the show, I want to be her friend.  She's witty and quick.

And...sigh.  Phoebe Waller-Bridge had to hand her drink to David Tennant because she couldn't lean forward to put it on the table because of that damn dress.  I'm pretty sure I've never seen a man have to do the same, or be taped into his outfit.

I didn't know much about Estafan except for her music, which I liked a lot. She was funny. Tennant looked so different in the film, I don't think I would have recognized him at first glance.

I always find it odd on this talk show - and others - when women wear things they'll clearly be uncomfortable in when sitting down and gesticulating. Men have it easy, all anyone expects of them are trousers and a shirt.

I think this mostly happens with people new to the 'game'. I remember Daisy Ridley also looking uncomfortable on the couch (another plunging V-line though not quite as revealing and better taped). More experienced women seem to know that those gowns are made for the red carpet and not for sitting down and having a lively conversation. It's all down to experience or a good stylist and sometimes good old fashioned common sense.

Gloria Estefan was great - I had never seen her in a talk show before and was completely surprised by her sense of humor.

The movie Tennant was promoting is currently airing on one of the movie channels here in th U.S. on my cable grid. I happened to catch it last week. He got to smooch more than one costar with that yak beard. It's a perfectly serviceable romcom. Faye Marsay looks good with pink hair!

I wish PWB could have spent more time talking about the show that so amused Camilla, Killing Eve. It is a dandy, dandy program, and my current tv obsession.

I'm not convinced Emilia wasn't wearing a yak wig. Her normal hair looks so much healthier than whatever was going on here.

Gloria's song parodies were excellent.

Me too! I like my Star Wars, but the finale of Killing Eve is coming up, and I'd be interested to hear more about that.

It was very funny that David Tennant was wearing the same suit and tie on the show as in the photo they showed.

Emilie Clarke fangirling over Brad Pitt was adorable.

That was very funny. And Clarke's story was sweet. I thought it was too bad that they had a set up so that Pitt didn't actually get the item he was bidding for.

I guess I have some good old fashioned common sense because I know better than to wear something like that and I have no experience with being on a red carpet or on a couch on TV (in my one TV experience, I was wearing a brownie uniform and standing) and I definitely (and obviously) don't have a stylist.  But I also can't imagine wearing a dress that has to be taped to me--maybe that's the common sense part.

It's an interesting contrast to the man on the couch, whose fashion faux pas was being seen wearing the same suit (and tie!) twice.  A suit that he looked comfortable in.

Hey me too (the only tv experience in a brownie uniform and standing)! It's not just on Graham though, I see women, experienced actors, on Colbert wearing short or revealing dresses they have to keep fussing with so they don't flash the audience. Taping is weird to me, but maybe because with my build I'd need duct tape or super glue. And even then, it wouldn't be a good look on me.

I did think it was funny that Tennant was wearing the same suit, and even the same tie (he found a combo he liked and stuck with it). There's such an obsession with celebrities not wearing the same thing twice. It seems not just wasteful, but silly, to me. If something looks good on you, why not keep wearing it. It definitely looked good on him.

i hate that style. it looks good on no woman. flat chest to large chest. it's ugly. it' like the designer forgot to put in the front of the dress. ugly.

just recently there was an actress on a talk show in a dress that rode all the way up when she sat on the couch (and it wasn't all that short, it was just the cut or material) to reveal her cellulite. nice to know celebrities can be normal but don't they do a test run before going on tv. i would have been mortified.

Okay then.  We have some data that indicates that standing in a brownie uniform on TV is not a stepping stone to further TV appearances.  Now...causation or correlation?  More research will be required.

If the wearer has big breasts, it looks vulgar.  If she has really small breasts, she probably has a bony sternum (like this woman did), and it looks kind of gross.  Plus there's always the anxiety of watching the person move, hoping the dress doesn't slip, not to mention the anxiety of the wearer.  What's the big appeal?

Actually, Trey Parker pulled it off, but he had the advantage of not having to worry about a nip slip.

I was a very grim and dignified Brownie who refused to wave at the camera. Causation?

Um, yes. The first would be the reason that kind of dress would never work for me - my dignity won't allow me to be vulgar. ;)

Phoebe Waller-Bridge talked so fast sometimes it was hard for me to understand her. I didn't hear her say anything about Killing Eve. I looked on IMDB and not only saw that she's a producer on the show, but she was also on Broadchurch. I haven't seen any of Killing Eve, but I'm going to watch it since I've heard it's fantastic.

I enjoyed everyone on the show.

Leon Bridges' song was lovely.

Basically, the reference was in the anecdote about her talking to Camilla - and referencing "girl on girl action" among other things - she didn't explicitly say the title, but since I've been watching Killing Eve, I knew right away what she was talking about. Because of this interview, I went back and watched Fleabag, which I originally didn't like. I stuck it through, enjoying it more with each episode (only 6, I believe) I really liked it this time, it's more like a 6 episode short story.

Presumably, the actress chose the dress she wore, so she is at fault for her fashion choice. Plenty of women appear on the show in pants.

Emilia Clarke was just so much fun. She seems like someone who would be a lot of fun to hang out with or work with.

Ditto on the bony sternum... I have never had that issue (putting it politely), but it makes me want to tell her to eat a sandwich. If you can see the bones there, the person is underweight.

My cable guide promised Mariam Marguiles, which would have been quite a addition to the couch.

Miriam was my original reason for tuning in—she always has either some extremely off-color anecdote or a hilarious reaction to someone else's! But it was still a fun couch. Count me among those utterly charmed by Gloria Estefan. I'd always liked her music, but she also seems like she'd be a fun person to sit next to at a dinner party.
