S2.E1: The Arrival

Mermaid mythology: Helen's warning

Original air date: 1/24/19

Lots of info to kick off the new season: Ben's mom's accident was ten years ago, Donna has a daughter, Dale got fired, Maddie's mom got fired, and Xander let the police on his boat because he's a big dumb dummy.

Even though I know it was all fake, I still felt bad for all the sea lions, whales, and mermaids being driven out of the water by that sound (I know, I'm such a wuss!).

I thought she worked for the "military", the same organization that took the suicide scientist's body and held Donna captive.

Missed funny scene, they should have put one of the mermaids in the ugly dress Ryn was trying to get the man to buy.

Glad to have this show back, it seems like its going to be an interesting season. It will be interesting to see Ryn and everyone else interacting with the other merpeople, including her niece, and dealing with hiding all of these merpeople from the military types.

I hope that Ben and Maddie get back together soon, them being broken up is rather sad. They still seem to be quite civil to each other, and now they have Ryn back in their lives again, so just make it work again!

I felt so sad seeing all the beached whales. Poor whales.

S2.E2: The Wolf at the Door

Quote

Ben, Maddie and Ryn desperately try to keep the newly arrived mermaid pack hidden from the rest of the town, but the new mermaids’ quick degradation on land forces them to get them back to the sea unnoticed during the town’s Mermaid Beauty Contest. Elaine grows more suspicious of Helen and her connections to their family.

Original air date: 1/31/19

Nicole: I was going to make breakfast but all you had was this shitty coffee and stale bread.

Nicole: You said your dad died not too long ago. Did it happen here on this boat?
Xander: So this is a sex first, ask questions later kind of relationship?

Susan: Pajamas and slippers day, huh?
Dale: Well, I figured I'd watch a couple of game shows and catch up on my soap operas.

Ted: I was always told that this money was to keep your side of the family quiet.
Helene: We have always lived up to our side of the bargain.
Ted: Your mother and your grandmother knew to keep the fund intact.
Helene: I'm the end of the line, Ted. There's nowhere else for it to go.
Ted: Why all of a sudden? What's it for?
Helene: None of your business. Maybe I'll buy a Maserati.

I'm calling Ryn's mermaid rival Nyr until we get a name for her. The only things Nyr has going for her are that mermaids are strong, fast, and learn quickly, but she grossly overestimates how useful brute strength is. A mermaid is stronger than an individual human or wolf, but Donna still managed to get captured. Additionally, the mermaids are on the military's radar and have resources the mermaids can't even fathom. Furthermore if raw strength were all that useful, they would have been able to tear apart that oil company apparatus rather than beaching themselves. The sound waves have less impact when they are out of the water. They could have climbed aboard and wrecked shit.

I can't even with Ben's dumb mother who is intent on proving that Helen isn't family. You have a small fortune put aside for and paid out to multiple generations of people who never socialize with "the family." She cannot possibly be that stupid. Ummm, it's blackmail money you big dummy. Somebody witnessed something, stole something, hurt somebody, raped somebody, or killed somebody way back when and there's proof that the great Pownall legacy is one built on lies. Her dumbass needs to stay out of it.

I agree. She's acting like Helen snuck into her house and stole her favorite necklace when in reality that fund has existed for at least two previous generations (since Ted mentioned Helen's mother and grandmother). It's not like that money belonged to Ben's mom and Helen took it away from her.

According to IMDB, her name is Katrina.

I swear, I have watched way too many supernatural shows and movies over the years, because the second we saw the wolves, I was like "oh shit, werewolves!" and started preparing for whatever that would lead to for a second. I mean, merpeople exist in this universe, who knows what else is running around?!

I am really enjoying this season so far. The merpeople trying to get around in the human world is fun, and its had lots of nice Ben/Maddie/Ryn interaction. I was happy that Maddie immediately knew what Ben was doing when her mom saw him at the support group, and was supportive of him. And the three of them all holding hands just makes me continue to wonder when they will just go on a triple date and get it over with.

So they gave Ryn the last name Fisher, and made her a Pieces? Was giving her the fake name "Imma Mermaid" on her ID too obvious? Ryns attempt at laughing is deeply terrifying and hilarious.

I try not to hate Xander but he is making it very hard. What is with his selective memory? Does he forget what they were trying to do when the merman killed his father? Does he forget that he killed Ryn's sister. Idiot!

I wonder how Ryn sees her relationship with Maddie and Ben. Do meremaids share their males? Do they commit to romantic or sexual relationships?

It's especially stupid because Chris had already escaped from the military facility and wanted abso-fucking-lutely nothing to do with mermaids/mermen/merpeople or the military. Xander's main motivation seemed to be about proving that the military was lying. He also seemed to have thought no further than capturing the creature. What on earth was Xander planning on doing with the creature? He didn't have a tank to keep it in or a way to study it. He didn't have any concrete evidence that the military had captured a merperson. Nor did he have any evidence that Chris wasn't attacked some other unknown animal. It was all so dumb and half-assed. At least dumbass Calvin was trying to sell the story to the news.

Most of the research on matriarchal and more egalitarian societies suggests that women in those cultures have different ideas about sexual relationships. However, none of those societies have strong females fight for dominance and the right to rule the pod.

S2.E3

Maddie: So clowns, Lady Gaga, and now rats? Any other phobias, Jerry?

Maddie: It looks like a hardware store threw up.

Susan: Your dad, he just took off. He wouldn't say where he was going and he took his gun.
Maddie: Dad takes his gun to the dry cleaner.

Ben: Say something into it.
Ryn: Something into it.

  • Love 1

Uggg stop it Xander. Just...stop, your making everything worse. Literally everything will be worse if he runs around telling people about this. He knows that Ben and Maddie are with the merpeople, and that they dont mean any harm, so him stirring the waters will just make everything worse. Pun intended.

Ben sticks his foot (paddle) into merpeople business, and starts problems. He meant well, and I get why he freaked out, but its best to let Ryn handle her business, at least for now. Its a nice reminder that while the merpeople are very human like and have emotions and thoughts and structures similar to land bound humans, they have a very different society and way of looking at things. The scene at the dock between Ben, Maddie, and Ryn was really sweet, and very lovely in how it was shot. Glad that they are all on the same wavelength, and are working together.

"Dad takes his gun to the dry cleaner". That made me giggle, but I am worried about Maddie and her dad. Her mom is up to something, maybe even a part of the group trying to find the merpeople. I worry that she might screw them over and break their hearts, especially Maddies dad, who seems to be really convinced that she is sticking around.

I find it hard to believe the merpeople don't seem to have any way to communicate with each other, a language.

I assume that they do have a language, just its nonverbal, or even telepathic, considering how their siren songs work. I guess its hard to have a spoken language when you live underwater, its probably why they struggle with speaking outside of the water.

Did Maddie really not hear the song? The way she reacted as Ryn sang, was quite strange.

I think a little bit of it did seep through, there might also be a vibrational, pheromonal and visual component. Anyhoo, I think I remember a little threeway action from some of the preview scenes (Maddie, Ryn, Ben).

Celebrate Valentines Day this year with the possible start of a human/mermaid/human Thruple, learning about the violent mating rituals of merpeople, and merpeople learning to dance!

This season is really good, I am really enjoying it. Even with Xavier and Cal are going to make literally everything worse for no reason.

  • Love 1

One thing I liked about this episode was learning just how different mermaid society is. The mating sounds pretty intense, but I like that the females are the dominant ones.

Awwww, I loved that Levi wanted to stay home and watch musicals. He was fascinated by the dancing so I'm glad he got to try dancing at the bar (even though it was a very different kind of dancing!).

I really felt for Helen's relative (I can't remember the guy's name). A (non-mermaid) friend of mine developed a skin condition several years ago. His doctor initially thought it might be contact dermatitis and asked if he had touched anything unusual recently and then moved on to asking if he had started using new soap, detergent, etc. My friend then went to a dermatologist and several specialists, none of whom could figure out what was causing this itchy rash. After months of this, he confessed to me that sometimes he felt like he was losing his mind because no one could determine the cause or give him any kind of cream/lotion/drug to make it go away. So I totally understood the relief when Helen's relative tried what she gave him and he saw almost immediate results.

Ha, stupid Xander. Of course he got tricked into letting Katrina escape from her prison. When he gleefully told her that he knew she couldn't go in the water and that if she killed him, she would be stuck out there on the boat, I was kind of hoping that she would just stab him for his stupidity. I was surprised that Xander then offered to help Katrina with the sonic problem. Does he just want revenge on Levi for his father's death? He really doesn't hold a grudge against the others? Or is this just a lie/trick to get her to trust him?

I continue to dislike Nicole. She introduced herself to Ben by saying she's been hanging out with Xander. Then when Ben introduced Nicole to Maddie by saying she's been hanging out with Xander, Nicole said, "That's one way to put it." Uh, actually that's exactly how YOU put it like five minutes ago.

Hahaha, I loved that when Levi was attacked at the bar, despite his earlier urge to fight, he just kept ducking and avoiding the punches until the other guy fell down.

I'm surprised the show held out this long for the Maddie/Ben/Ryn threesome. But I liked that Maddie has not been shown to be jealous of Ryn's feelings for Ben and that she has been talking to Ryn about it.

I know generally when something bad has happened to you at the hands of someone else you don't really think about the damage you've done.. So xander's not really thinking about Donna.. But couldn't madder.. Or especially Ben ad he's interacted with cancer a few times since more of the clan came on land... Couldn't he remind xander that he also killed someone's parent donna's daughter is right there.. Maybe point out the orphan he made when he's all lusty for revenge and indignant... And if I get mermaid culture right.. Wasnt Katrina  in charge of this clan when Levi killed his dad.. So really the mermaid to be real angry at is the one on your boat

It is strange since Xander was alone with Ryn in the woods saying how sorry he was for killing Donna. When Xander sees Levi he bursts into uncontrollable rage. Xander only has nightmares about his father being killed, not about him killing Donna.

It wasn't until Maddie kind of heard the siren song that she forgot that she had broken up with Ben for "lusting in his heart" for Ryn. Maddie should give Ben props for just wanting to hear the song again, instead of wanting to get all freaky-deaky with Ryn, like what appears about to happen.

That was so adorable, especially as Levi has never actually had legs before. Him at the bar, and even having fun learning about humans, was super adorable in general. His eyes just lit up when he saw people dancing.

Mermaid dating sounds super intense, but merpeople seem to be kind of intense in general. I like that we are getting more about their society and what their lives are like. They make a good point this week, that the merpeople are going to get stir crazy, so they need to have more of an outlet for their energy. What a good job for a merperson who is stuck on land for a bit, and is only now starting to comprehend human society?

S2.E5: Primal Instincts

Quote

Ryn continues to try to teach the other mermaids to be more human in order to better assimilate, but some are starting to resist her, causing Ryn to wonder if she herself is becoming too human. Maddie finds herself in a dangerous situation trying to help her mom. Meanwhile, Ben and Xander reconcile in order to work together to get the mermaid pack back into the water.

Original air date: 2/21/19

Xander: So what's my job?
Ben: You get me close, then you wait.
Xander: Uh, what if they spot me?
Ben: Sockeye are running. Just a wayward trawler out for an evening catch.
Xander: All right, dumb fisherman - part I was born to play.

Susan: Where did you and Maddie meet?
Ryn: On land.
Susan: I hope so.
Ryn: I meet Maddie with Ben.
Susan: Oh, okay. Maddie really seems to love that Ben.
Ryn: Yes. Ben is love.
Susan: Oh, that's sweet.
Ryn: I would like to make love with Ben and Maddie.
Susan: Oh. Okay.

Ryn is from Finland. Of course she is Maddie. They just cant keep away from those fish puns, can they? Honestly, I would be just the same.

I love that Ben and Maddie were all "we didnt want to rush you" and Ryn is just "lets do this, I wanna make love NOW"! And her talking to Susan was just great. "I would like to make love to Ben and Maddie." "Oh...ok...." Yeah, shit has gone down while you were away, Susan! Sometimes you come home, and your daughter is in a Thruple with a hunky marine biologist and a mermaid. Happens.

So thats another body to deal with. This is just getting harder and harder to all cover up.

Look at Ryn bringing gender equality to the ocean!

I really love this season. Not yet one episode I didn't like. I suspect that by the end of the season, Levi will choose to remain on land and the older merman will die a tragical death. I don't know why but I like him a lot but I'm sure he is going to die. I was so afraid for him when Kathrina came by.

I have just remenber that Ben saved Levi when the others left him to die on the beach after they transformed. Now I understand why he wants to stay with Ben all the time.

Poor Maddie, now they all have to deal with another body and she will be the prime suspect.

  • Love 1

Hahaha, I love the picture that Calvin has of Xander for his caller ID.

So how long before someone finds out that Maddie's dad covered up the Glen's murder? He's definitely not getting his job back after that.

I rolled my eyes when Ben's father said he was tired of apologizing. Uh, I don't recall hearing you apologize even ONCE so you can stuff your sorries in a sack! Same goes for Ben's mom who suggested that there must be a way for them to meet in the middle. Okay, Ben's mom, explain to me a possible compromise in this situation. That's like being kind of pregnant or kind of having cancer. You either lease your land to the oil company or you don't.

As someone who watched Pretty Little Liars, I hated that the girls tromped around leaving fingerprints, hair, etc. everywhere so I cheered when I saw Dale put on gloves and shoe covers before going into Glen's motel room to stage the crime scene. FINALLY, someone with some common sense! I mean, duh, he's a police officer but still.

That went over my head...I thought he put them in the drug dealer’s parked car.
