S04.E11: Hamilton/Berg

Recommended Posts

We now have characters that I WANT to die, and not characters that I'm sad over knowing they won't last long. Of course Tandy finds a way to screw up an execution (he of course gets the Hamilton duel wrong). Of course THIS is when the bomb comes to play. Goddamn it.

Oh hey, Jasper! I'm not surprised that Melissa knows what happened to him and won't tell anyone.

Next week: SOMETHING happens!

So, the Rubik's cube was both the trigger and the actual bomb.  Really ??  That is pretty weak, considering they dedicated an ENTIRE episode to the back story to the Rubik's cube. Hell, that is more than most of the main characters on the show have had.

Tandy and Todd were just stupid the way they locked back into the prison -- that's not how they found him, they should have locked him back in the actual cellblock.  No wonder Karl go out so fast.

I'm with @Galileo908 -- they need to kill off some more of the main characters.

RIP Karl (and the Rubik's Cube of Doom)! I kinda figured that's what would happen; there was no way they would kill off any of the main group (nor a child like Jasper), while Karl represented a clear danger to them and ultimately proved not to be as capable of change as he'd hoped. :\

I thought it was pretty funny that, when the gang realized they had no choice but to kill the guy, they all turned to Melissa -- I mean, I can't believe they would forget how she started spinning out after she killed Darrell (Jon Hamm) at the beginning of s.3, but I liked her response ("Oh sure, everyone looks at me when someone needs killing"). :D

We finally got some forward movement on "Melissa hiding Jasper from the rest of the group" plot, too (she finally told them); I suppose next week will deal with the fallout from that. Also, now that Tandy's intuition about someone has been proven right for once, it would be nice see whether that has any effect on his role in the group dynamic (especially how the other survivors besides Todd and Carol might start to see him).

And the episode is called 'Hamilton/Berg' because Tandy is an idiot, and didn't know that Hamilton dueled Aaron Burr -- even after Karl corrected him, he still didn't get it.

Can they just kill off Tandy already ?  Plus, the beard needs to go.  Todd stays facially well-groomed, even the cannibal stay well-groomed in prison so why can't Tandy ?

Considering Forte is the creator of the show, probably not.

"Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Berg"

"Burr"

"You need a jacket there, buddy?"

Come on, that was pretty funny :)

Yup; also, I thought he had a rather sweet scene with Carol (when she became so upset after drawing the short straw to kill Karl, and Tandy cut his own straw to show his willingness to take her place). :)

Carol, why did you have to hold the glass of water for Karl to drink, you could have just left the glass and crazy straw on the table, he can move his body.

Anyway, when Karl scared them and their reactions were funny though.

January Jones did some great work in this episode with her physical reactions during the various goings-on. I think that's really her strength as an actor, and it's almost like the less Melissa has to say, the more we get of her character. I like that we already know her motivations for assisting Jasper with his living remotely, even though it doesn't need to be clearly laid out enough. We know enough of Jasper and Melissa's character from the context of the show (and have witnessed enough of Todd's actions) to get that whole dynamic, while it lays the breadcrumbs for whatever will come next.

I really love the Melissa-Jasper stuff. It's not all that often that you get a woman who doesn't want children portrayed as someone who's actually really good with children.

I do, too -- I'm sort of glad she's respecting what Jasper wants for now (he's not ready to rejoin the group) and not pushing him, but at the same time she lets him know how Todd feels about the situation.

I like Fred Armisten. I knew Carl had to die, but he was good while he lasted. Such a conflicted cannibal!

I liked when he scared everyone and then said, "That was too soon."

I like Fred Armisten.  I really didn't like Carl.  If they're going to introduce random characters, I just wish they'd add some that actually move the story forward.  This has become a Seinfeldian show about nothing, when it really had a fun (albeit horribly morbid) premise to begin with.  I miss the old antics that came with being the only ones around.

I'm guessing that Will Forte just likes the beard. There's no practical reason why the character must have it. There does seem to be a trend in beards right now - men with long, shaggy, ZZ-Top looking growths. I don't know why, I think it's awful, but tastes differ.

So, I'm glad we're done with Karl. He was funny but they can't drag something like that out forever. (I cracked up when they were asking him if he would kill them and he shrugged and went "I mean . . . .")

I'm also glad they dispensed with the Rubik's cube subplot. I KNEW that's what was going to happen as soon as we saw him with it, because no way they would have Tandy just execute him in cold blood. Convenient way to kill off the character without ruining one of the main characters. But, could a bomb actually fit inside a working Rubik's cube, once strong enough to kill someone?

I'd completely forgotten about the Rubik's Cube...great timing on the writers' part!

I'm not sure we saw a body...he could have escaped.

Totally agree. One of my best friends doesn't want children, but she is my most supportive ally when it comes to infertility and she is fabulous with my son. Another is godmother to a number of kids and she likes to spoil them and send them back home. The idea that not wanting to be a mother means you hate kids or are bad with kids is ridiculous.

I was expecting Karl to either run or hit Tandy over the head when Tandy turned his back on him.

I was too. I had completely forgotten about the Rubik's Cube until it exploded.
