Robert Kirkman wanted The Walking Dead show to kill off Rick early: 'It'll be funny!'
By Devan Coggan    July 22, 2023

The acclaimed comic book writer took over Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, in a panel moderated by Entertainment Weekly editor-in-chief Patrick Gomez. In addition to writing a whole host of iconic comic franchises, Kirkman has adapted several of his comics for the small screen — including The Walking Dead, Outcast, and Amazon's animated series Invincible.

Kirkman told Gomez that he treats every adaptation differently, but when he first got involved with The Walking Dead TV show, he was eager to deviate from the comic as much as possible — even if that meant killing off familiar heroes.
*  *  *
"With Walking Dead, I was much younger and much more reckless," Kirkman told the audience. "I was an absolute lunatic. I would get in the writers' room and be like, 'Kill Rick Grimes today! I don't care! It'll be funny! People will freak out, and it'll be fun!' The writers were like, 'Robert, you're crazy. We can't do that.' But any time there were big changes in The Walking Dead, that's what excited me."

Apparently we had a 1-11 box set released as a UK only limited edition in early July, the Legacy edition, limited to 1200 with a numbered hologram sticker or so they claim, it's still available on amazon now which rather says a lot about its popularity.

I genuinely thought it would have been snapped up, the reviews have been less than spectacular about the quality of the box and the arrangements of its  contents however.

All of my vinyl and all of my CD's are up in the loft, if I bought the new box set I know it would soon follow my DVD's which are heading up there soon 😱

‘The Walking Dead’ Spinoffs & ‘Interview With The Vampire’ To Resume Production As AMC Networks Strikes Significant Agreements With SAG-AFTRA

Quote

The Walking Dead spinoffs Daryl Dixon and The Ones Who Live and Interview with the Vampire are set to resume production after AMC Networks struck agreements with SAG-AFTRA.

The three shows are part of interim agreements with the broadcaster that will allow filming to resume on the three high-profile series.

The deal revealed Thursday marks the most significant television properties to strike such an agreement since the actors walked out. Other series on the interim agreement list include faith series The Chosen; Apple TV+’s Tehran, which was handed an agreement due to its international nature; and Hal and Harper, an indie series from Cha Cha Real Smooth filmmaker and star Cooper Raiff starring Lili Reinhart and Mark Ruffalo.

Deadline understands that Interview with the Vampire will resume filming its second season in Prague, while The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will film its second season in Europe. The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, which stars Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira reprising their roles as Rick and Michonne, has work left to do in post-production including ADR.

AMC Networks CEO Kristin Dolan said earlier this month that the writers and actors strikes wouldn’t begin to threaten the company’s programming supply until “well into 2024.”

The Walking Dead: Rick Grimes Gets New Threezero Figure

"The 1/6 Rick Grimes (Season 7) collectible action figure stands approximately 30.5cm (12") tall and features multiple points of articulation and a realistic lifelike head sculpt. The craftsmanship perfectly captures the character's expression from a prolonged period of war as depicted in the seventh season of The Walking Dead. The hair is carefully designed with layers of gray and white paint effects to depict Rick's aged appearance, and the figure's fabric dark gray long-sleeved shirt and black pants are weathered to add to the post-apocalyptic look.

Loaded with accessories, Rick's belt is cleverly designed to contain hidden pouches, with a high-quality black PVC leather belt featuring a gun holster on the right hip and an axe holster on the left. Additionally, the significant silver wristwatch intricately designed with very fine details. The figure includes an assault rifle with detailed paint effects, complete with a retractable fabric strap, as well as realistically replicated pistol and axe.

1/6 Rick Grimes comes with four pairs of interchangeable hands, including relaxed hands, firearm hands, axe-wielding hands, and fists. Place the figure alongside other The Walking Dead 1/6 scale collectible figures to showcase classic scenes from the show and complete your collection of favorite survivors."

For $179.99 I would want my figure's wrists to NOT look like my 1970's Action Man (Gi Joe) 🙄

Is Walking Dead Franchise Building Toward an Epic All-Series Crossover? ‘I Do Have Dreams of That,’ Says EP Scott Gimple
BY MATT WEBB MITOVICH, CHARLIE MASON   FEBRUARY 6, 2024
https://tvline.com/news/the-walking-dead-crossover-movie-1235143890/

Consider, if you will: The Ones Who Live has Rick and Michonne on a collision course with not only each other but World Beyond baddie Jadis. Before Fear TWD concluded, it sent off Morgan in search of his old pals. The Season 1 finale of Daryl Dixon dispatched OG Carol to find her MIA bestie. And doesn’t the skyline at which Rick gazes in the Ones Who Live trailer look like it could be that of the Dead City that is the setting of Maggie and Negan’s offshoot?
*  *  *
“I came into [The Walking Dead] in Season 2 as a fan of the comic and as a fan of the show, and even then I would have these dreams, these wishes, these things I wanted to do in story. And actually [a spinoff about] Rick and Michonne was one of them, that I quietly alluded to in ‘Clear’ (Season 3, Episode 12).”
*  *  *
“I didn’t know if I’d be able to tell that story,” Gimple shared, “and you do have to be flexible, you have to have this garden of forking paths and pivot” when needed. “So when it comes to something like [an Avengers: Endgame-style, all-series crossover event], yeah, I do have dreams of merging this all together, and I have laid little breadcrumbs toward that, but you never know exactly when and how [it will come together], because of a variety of reasons.

Dead City is a vibrant show, Daryl [Dixon] is a vibrant show, this one [The Ones Who Live] is…,” Gimple noted. “I will just say that I’m building those pathways, but there could be all sorts of pivots along the way that change it. So I guess answer is yes…?”

THE WALKING DEAD
...
Titled “Days Gone By,” AMC’s zombie franchise made a jaw-droppingly cinematic first impression when it arrived on the scene in 2010. The Frank Darabont-written and directed premiere did a masterful job of introducing viewers to the series’ forebodingly apocalyptic setting as well as its main protagonist in Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes. The 67-minute kickoff also succeeded in doing something that had, up until that point, eluded many end of days-themed shows: it scared the living daylights out of us.

The Original Pitch for Walking Dead Made 1 Huge Change to Rick Grimes' Backstory
By Robert Wood   Dec 20, 2024
https://screenrant.com/walking-dead-opening-changes-rick-grimes-backstory-factoid/

Quote

In The Walking Dead Deluxe #2, Kirkman shares the pitch he originally sent to Image Comics for The Walking Dead, created with Tony Moore. While there are several small differences from the eventual version fans know - like 'Lori' being 'Carol' and the Grimes family living in Pittsburgh - the big change is that Rick starts the story at home with his family, not waking up from a coma.
*  *  *
... Rick very nearly started the story sitting on the couch and watching the world end on TV, as fans can see below.
*  *  *
Walking Dead Deluxe #2 (featuring new colors from Dave McCaig in the main story) shares Kirkman's pitch, where Rick and Lori find out about the zombie uprising from a news report. Sadly, Rick mistakes the news for a War of the Worlds-style hoax, and still ends up being ambushed by one of the undead. The different opening means that Rick starts off his adventure with Lori and Carl, removing the effect of thrusting him into an already fallen world. It also removes the chance for Lori and Shane's ill-fated affair, which set up the major conflict of the first arc.

In the issue, Kirkman reveals that marketing director Erick Stephenson criticized the opening, saying it was "a lame horror movie opening." He also admits, "it was terribly cliché, now that I look back on it." The criticism got Kirkman to rethink the opening, leading to Rick's coma and the iconic opening that TV and comic fans will remember forever.
*  *  *
While some fans have speculated that Walking Dead was inspired by 28 Days Later - which also starts with its protagonist waking up in hospital, weeks into a 'zombie' plague - Kirkman has always said that he only saw Danny Boyle's movie after Walking Dead began publication. There's no reason to suspect otherwise, especially as even in Boyle's case, it wasn't a totally new idea - the classic 1951 novel Day of the Triffids opens with essentially the same concept.
*  *  *
Kirkman may have saved Walking Dead's opening with a big change, but there were many more to come - from the events surrounding key characters to the whole purpose of the franchise. Kirkman originally saw Walking Dead as part of a horror/sci-fi trilogy, where three different 'realities' would see the same characters face very different threats, similar to Stephen King's twin novels Desperation and The Regulators. Ultimately, Walking Dead was incredibly popular, running for years as "the zombie movie that never ends."
*  *  *
Kirkman also planned to kill Rick off early. Originally, the scene where Carl shoots Shane was going to go another way - Shane would have killed Rick in an argument about Lori, with Carl then taking over as the comic's main character. Other changes came from Charlie Adlard, who drew most of the comic series after Tony Moore's opening issues. Adlard told Kirkman that while his idea of Maggie killing Negan in revenge for Glenn's murder would work, it would be far more interesting to leave him alive and see him won over by Rick's philosophy.
*  *  *
Even the ending was originally different. In The Walking Dead Deluxe #84, Kirkman revealed that for a long time, he intended Walking Dead to end with a flashforward to a statue of Rick, showing that he had helped society rebuild... only to zoom out and show zombies stumbling past, implying that humanity still eventually fell to the undead. Kirkman even told this ending to Rick Grimes actor Andrew Lincoln and Walking Dead executive producer Greg Nicotero, but eventually changed his mind, leading to a flashforward where Rick truly has allowed humanity to rebuild.

ScreenRant: The show started off in the United States, and now it's expanded worldwide. What are some locations you'd like to see The Walking Dead visit next?
Scott M. Gimple: There's one that we're working on that I'm very, very excited to see that we've never been before. I'd love to see it in Tokyo, I would love to see it in Africa, and I would love to see it in Iceland. I know that's a weird one, but we want to spam the globe because there's stories all over the globe.

It's so integral to Daryl Dixon's story, but even beyond that, we want to go [more places]. We want to see other characters throughout the world, and how they're faring. And we have had a lot of experiments to that. We've actually done really cool stories towards that, but they just haven't come to fruition for this reason or that. But I will say that by doing them, I've essentially seen those shows in my brain, and I really like them.

‘It Was Not What I Was Told the Ending Was’: The Walking Dead’s Andrea Recalls a Very Different Outcome for Her Character
By Rachael Fiddis   Mar 12, 2025
https://gamerant.com/the-walking-dead-andrea-different-ending-for-character/

Quote

During a recent Comic-Con this month in Aberdeen's P&J Live event complex, The Walking Dead cast, which included Cooper Andrews (Jerry), Pollyanna McIntosh (Jadis), and Laurie Holden (Andrea), discussed their time on the hit show. Talking about her departure from The Walking Dead after playing the role of former civil rights attorney Andrea from 2010 to 2013, Holden expressed her disappointment at being killed off the show too soon, revealing that it wasn't the story she was told the character would get. "It was not what I was told the ending was. I was told I was going to end up on a horse, save the town and leave Woodbury to reunite with my family, so no one was more surprised than me to get that call at 10.30 the night before," said Holden.
*  *  *
Holden went on to say that finding out her character would come to a tragic end was "very emotional" and that it was a huge process coming to terms with the death of someone she had played for so long. "It was a death of career and a death of family, and I don't mean to be dramatic, but it was my home, my job, and a role that I loved." To add insult to injury, Holden goes on to explain further that she was building a house at the time of Andrea's death, and apparently, she couldn't afford to finish it due to getting killed off so suddenly and then couldn't auction for another role for 6 months until the death scene aired because she couldn't be seen on any other show as people would know her character was killed off. "I was literally in no man's land", stated Holden.
*  *  *
It certainly seems like a puzzling decision about why The Walking Dead's producer and writer Glen Mazzara killed off Andrea’s TV adaptation at the last minute. In the comics, Andrea was portrayed as a strong and capable leader, but in the series, the show made her character somewhat unlikeable at times and unable to make good choices for the group and herself, especially when it came to the Governor. ....

Thomas Jane as Rick Grimes
'The Walking Dead' (2010–2022)

However, if things had gone slightly differently, it would have been Thomas Jane yelling Carl into the wilderness. Original showrunner Frank Darabont had previously worked with Jane on The Mist, and thought the actor would be the perfect choice to lace up Rick’s boots. Scheduling conflicts forced Jane to drop out of the part and do HBO’s Hung instead, but the shift in casting didn’t seem to hurt The Walking Dead’s success.

The Walking Dead Boss Talks Future Movie Possibilities, Upcoming Spin-offs & More (Exclusive)
Here is what's coming next in the future of The Walking Dead franchise.
By Sam Hargrave   March 28, 2025

When asked whether he still hopes to explore The Walking Dead through a movie, the CCO said it is "probably less likely." However, he did say they are "talking about" developing another "16-hour a year series" akin to The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, as recent spin-offs carried shorter episode counts:

Q: "Last 'Walking Dead' question for you. We talked a lot about hopes. The Rick and Michonne show used to be a movie, but it was shifted into a show. Do you still have hopes in the movie realm? Obviously, you can't say anything specific, but are you still hoping to explore that avenue eventually with the franchise?"

Gimple: "I mean, I would just say different formats... They're always in our minds and you know, is it a six-hour, is it a two-hour, is it a... my dream would be another 16-hour a year series. We're talking about that. Feature films... probably less likely. But different ways that we do the show, we have to do it and we will."

The Walking Dead Actor Reflects On Glenn's Death Nearly 10 Years Later & How It Changed The Show
By Lukas Shays   April 6, 2025
https://screenrant.com/walking-dead-glenn-death-reflection-ross-marquand/

Quote

While Glenn's death was necessary, Ross Marquand (Aaron) believes that it likely hurt the show's viewership. At the Ross Marquand Spotlight Panel at AwesomeCon, ScreenRant's Joe Deckelmeier served as the moderator and asked Marquand about his perspective of that horrifying scene. He described it as a "very sad" scene that was more devastating on-screen than during filming. Despite the differences, he did find the need to ask Yeun to stop moving his head during the production, because Glenn's dangling eye was nauseating in person. Check out his quote below:

I will say that was the episode that we lost a lot of fans, I think, just from the sheer gore. It was so visceral and so intense that I think a lot of people were like, "I'm out. I can't do it anymore." I was very sad, because I love working with Steve Yeun, and I loved working with Michael [Cudlitz].

But I'll be honest, viewing him on the TV screen several months later with Sonequa Martin-Green and her husband, we had much more of a physical reaction than we did watching his death in real [time]. Obviously, it's terrible. You've got all the gore and the blood, and everything's pouring out of his head. But in between takes, as I'm sure you all remember, the eyeball was just dangling. I remember it looked like those paddle balls.

His eyeball was bouncing around as he was talking. It was like, "What are you going to do after this?" "I've got a role on Voltron, I think I'm gonna do some voiceover work..." And I was like, "Oh, cool. Can you just stop moving your head for a second? I'm going to throw up." It looked so disgusting, and that's a credit to the special effects team. They literally make all of these terrible moments look real, from the zombies on down to the bludgeons.

It's a real credit to those craftsmen for making it so believable, but truly it wasn't as effective for us as actors until we watched it on the screen. We're like, "Oh, my God..." I think all of us, audience members and cast alike, were just blown away by how sad it was.
*  *  *
Marquand is right that the show lost viewership after Glenn's death, and the difference was stark. The season 7 premiere reportedly drew 17 million viewers, the second-highest premiere in the show's history, but the season finale painted a darker picture, as it drew just 11 million, the fifth-highest finale in the show's history. The next premiere drew just 11.4 million viewers and concluded with eight million, and the rest of the show would see the decline continue. After Glenn's death, the series never recovered, which is why The Walking Dead ended with season 11, which drew just 2 million viewers.
