formerlyfreedom August 25, 2017 Share August 25, 2017 HBO is making it available on their HBO Go and HBO Now streaming platforms. Quote Pssh, who wants to wait around until Sunday, September 10th to watch James Franco play twins? You can now stream the first episode of The Deuce on HBO Go and HBO Now. From creator David Simon (he’s responsible for a show called The Wire, ever heard of it?) the hour-long drama centers around Times Square in 1971 — not really the family-friendly hotspot it’s known as now. Franco stars as Vincent, a bartender and father of two, and Frankie Martino, a gambler in need of a few dollars he owes to the mob. Maggie Gyllenhaal also stars in what is sure to be one of this fall’s hottest shows. And thanks to the fine people at HBO, you can now watch it a full two weeks and two days before it premieres. 3 Link to comment
formerlyfreedom August 26, 2017 Share August 26, 2017 Alan Sepinwall interviews the creators of The Deuce. Note - no huge spoilers, but comments may reflect the first episode which won't air for a couple of weeks. Quote I got to speak with Pelecanos and Simon last week about the genesis of the series (and the challenges of developing a ‘70s period piece at the same time that Vinyl was in the works), the inspiration for the identical twins (one a mob-affiliated bar manager, the other a degenerate gambler) played by star/producer/director James Franco, the important role of all the women behind the scenes (including director Michelle MacLaren and Maggie Gyllenhaal, who’s a producer and also plays a pimp-less prostitute named Candy), using so many Wire alums (Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Chris Bauer, Gbenga Akinnagbe, and Method Man, among others) in the cast, and a lot more. EtheltoTillie August 26, 2017 Share August 26, 2017 I've really been excited about this. I just started watching the pilot. I was in high school and college in NYC in those years and remember it well. We used to go to the cheesy movie theaters on 42nd Street to see regular (non porn) movies for cheap. 2 Link to comment
MCMLXXVII August 27, 2017 Share August 27, 2017 (edited) Is Franco's character based on the Mitchell brothers (not sure if they were twins) or is this a pure fictionalization? Edited August 27, 2017 by MCMLXXVII Link to comment

That's a good question - I am not finding anything on line to confirm that, but it certainly wouldn't be a stretch. The Mitchell brothers weren't twins, BTW. Now I'm just mad I've watched it and have to wait three weeks to see the next episode! It was certainly an interesting watch, and while I'm not sure I'd go as far as saying I liked it, I am intrigued by it. 2 Link to comment
scrb August 31, 2017 Share August 31, 2017 I can see people decrying what Times Square has become, a bland, safe Disney-field outdoor mall of shops and restaurants to draw in tourists. But was the seedy and dodgy place from the '70s better? I would assume that part of the reason Times Square was like that was the rampant corruption of the NYPD and weak city govt., which went bankrupt in that era. So it was the result of neglect as much as anything else. Of course, admitting that Times Square now may be "better" or safer, making midtown more accessible for everyone, tourists as well as residents may be admitting that Giuliani's controversial policing policies and tenure made living, working and visiting the area and the city as a whole a better experience. 1 Link to comment

Not them, the Mitchell brothers were in California, but were also adult film pioneers. Edited September 1, 2017 by MCMLXXVII Link to comment

BingeyKohan August 21, 2018 Share August 21, 2018 Seems like a major change in status (and hairstyles) for everyone...except the pimps. The only one I don't seem to remember spotting in the season 2 trailer (set to "September") was Jamie Neumann's character (the one who got her underarm slashed by her pimp in the seedy hotel stairwell early in the show). I thought she was a compelling presence and I'd like to see her back - unless I'm forgetting some major tragedy that befell her character? https://news.avclub.com/maggie-gyllenhaal-dreams-big-in-the-deuce-season-2-trai-1828471334 Link to comment

College girl hid her at her apt, and then signed over the check her dad gave her at that country club party. Edited August 28, 2018 by MCMLXXVII 1 Link to comment

MCMLXXVII January 3, 2022 Share January 3, 2022 There’s a new Netflix Series Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer which covers a serial killer of sex workers (and other women) in the late 70s/early 80s. It’s quite good. Link to comment
