S02.E20: Hi, My Name Is...

Evan is thrilled to open his first bank account, but is unsure if he should use his American name or his Chinese name on the account. This leads to Louis and Jessica revealing how each of them acquired their American names and reminiscing about the first time they met.

I haven't watched this ep yet, but as someone who is agonizing whether to stop using my very Korean first name in favor of my American middle name so that I won't have to deal with employers being scared off, I feel it already.

As a person who has many Asian friends with two names I found this episode cute. I didn't realize the boys had Chinese names until this episode. Pretty soon Emory is going to be taller than Eddie, that kid is growing so fast.

The first time Emory spoke, I was shocked. His voice clearly just started to change. That's actually adorable.

The name stories were very cute and I love grandma's advice at the end. Eddie's dream of being topaz was amazingly awful. That sounds like such a stripper name that I can't imagine it working on a gangster/fashion designer/mogul type at all.

And just to add, topaz (my birthstone) is not the worst birthstone. It's the only orange birthstone. All the months stuck with reds, blues and greens can fight it out for the bottom.

The whole family's (and the banker guy) disdain for Eddys Topaz name was hilarious. I wish we heard what the boys Chinese names were. I liked hearing about the name changes, and the stories behind them.

YMMV I guess, but I would think you would *want* companies to know you would support their diversity initiatives. BTW, our company is now moving to a system that redacts the names from resumes, to eliminate any name prejudice either way.

Shaq has found a real second career on this show. And he seems to be getting better at it. I love all the callbacks to that era.

For an episode concentrating on a very random subject matter, it was really well-made and funny.  Of course the flash-backs great.  I wonder if they actually gave Jessica a legit Chinese name, my mandarin isn't good enough that I wasn't able to figure out if her name actually translated to what she said.  Her decision to choose Jessica is pretty much how my sister ended up with Heidi, it was after she watched the movie "Heidi" on TV.

My oldest son watches this show with me and we love it!  All of my kids have Chinese middle names so I was kind of wondering why they didn't just have the boys use their Chinese names as middle names, but I also understand wanting to keep in touch with their heritage.  I forget did the show mention if the boys were born in the states?  I guess I always assumed they were so I would have figured that the parents would have just given them English first names and Chinese middle names....(that's what my in-laws did).

I liked this. All the flashbacks were great. The one where Louis and Jessica meet at the restaurant where they both got food poisoning was so funny. I don't often like vomit jokes, but seeing the shadow of Louis vomiting like Regan from The Exorcist was fantastic.

One of my favorite moments was when Evan said to the banker, "Yes, Frank. That's my name. Seafood." That little actor is so good.

I forgot to mention the original Louis in Louis Huang's flashback. At first I thought the guy was supposed to be Mike Milligan from Fargo. The year's about right, but I guess that wasn't the intention.

My parents are from Hong Kong and I am Canadian born.  I was born with a western first name and was also given a Chinese middle name - fairly typical in our circle.  However, my western birthname is a nickname, so I legally changed it (to the long/full version) before I graduated from university.  I just didn't want to sound like a spoiled mall rat out of "Clueless" when looking for a job!!  It's not that my parents didn't know better, it's just that they thought my original name was closer-sounding to my Chinese name!

An episode about names is awesome since I can totally relate.

I also love episodes with Jessica's sister Connie and their "sister language."

Jessica sticking Honey, her husband, and frenemy in her story about college. Great way to include them in the episode.

I also love Jessica and Connie's subtitled conversations. The best one was when they were insulting each other but actually expressing their love.

Louis and Jessica met in the states so I think it's safe to assume the boys were born there
