Second, what was Disney's flop?? Also, on the subject of Jungle Book at what point are we as a society going to start discussing the legacy of Jon Favreau and/or how immensely rich that guy must be by now?? gator12 May 9, 2016 Share May 9, 2016 (edited) Yes The Finest Hours was the Disney's flop, I guess they knew it would be a flop since they dump it in January. People are kind of surprise that Jon Favreau is working with Disney again, I wonder if he and Marvel didn't have the best relationship. They really should talk more about Jon Favreau, he basically is the reason why Marvel is the Kingdom that it is as part of the Disney Empire. Speaking of Disney, which will come out on top? Alice through the looking Glass or X-Men, both come out on May 27th Edited May 9, 2016 by gator12 1 Link to comment

Dejana May 10, 2016 Author Share May 10, 2016 (edited) Pretty much everything in the Top 10 was underestimated except for Captain America, and two movies changed places. It is rather extraordinary to see so many $300 million movies this early in the year and that the combined star power of Batman and Supes won't have it finishing better than fifth for 2016 (but probably worse, as time goes on). The days when The Dark Knight made so much money that they casually pushed Half-Blood Prince back eight months to balance out their slate, must seem a very distant memory for WB. I had no idea Marvel went for the same price as Lucasfilm! And Pixar was $7.4B?! How did I not know that? I'm surprised because my gut would say that Lucasfilm was worth more than Marvel (at time of purchase) but clearly my gut is undervaluing and overvaluing various assets. Also, yay for Captain America -- it was SO MUCH FUN!! BvS was SO BORING I literally checked my watch to see how much more I had to sit through. AND CA:Civil War balanced so many characters without leaving you going "who the fuck was that?" at any point, whereas BvS was 2.5 hours of "WTF is going on??" (Obvs, IMHO.) Dejana May 29, 2016 Author Share May 29, 2016 (edited) Another weekend, another underwhelming sequel (or two). Will studios ever learn that not all successful movies need follow-ups? And it was about time for Disney to have a miss, but ouch, what a flop! Pretty much everything that could go wrong for this one did: the post-Avatar 3D boom faded long ago, the sequel was 3-4 years too late and audiences have soured on wacky Johnny Depp persona. Because another film is doing a okay at 28 million. I usually leave out the budget info because the box office charts don't always include it for every movie, it's prone to major inaccuracies (studios often significantly underreport the real number) and the reported budget doesn't include the marketing costs, which can run in the nine figures for a big budget tentpole. You're right, though, it does give a different picture of how a movie is performing relative to expectations. 2 Link to comment

X-Men: Apocalypse is what happens when a superhero franchise runs out of ideas Quote The movie only exists because the X-Men franchise must go on, at least in the studio's eyes This is one of the big dangers for the extended franchise model of filmmaking — that characters and series will be kept alive not because there’s a story to tell, but because the franchise must be kept alive. We’ve already seen this happen with Sony’s ho-hum efforts to reboot the Spider-Man series — leading to two competent but essentially repetitive Amazing Spider-Man films that struggled to justify themselves. Like X-Men: Apocalypse, they were franchise placeholders, existing only because some movie with Spider-Man in the title had to exist. 3 Link to comment

methodwriter85 June 12, 2016 Share June 12, 2016 Me Before You is holding well; should finish a bit above 50 million domestic, I believe. Not a blockbuster like The Fault in Our Stars, but doing better than any recent Nicholas Sparks movie. We're definitely going to get a Conjuring 3. I kind of think it would be hilarious if they essentially remade the Haunting in Connecticut for Part 3, since that franchise attempt is dead in the water. The original is almost a decade old anyway. 1 Link to comment

It seems like it depends...even in China, the movie shows signs of frontloading and studios get less money from international grosses, generally. Still, if the sequel costs less, possibly. AimingforYoko July 3, 2016 Share July 3, 2016 Dory is Disney's fourth movie over $300m domestic in 2016. Even in these inflationary times with the IMAX and 3-D upcharges that's impressive. And we've still got Pete's Dragon, Moana and Rogue One coming. A little surprised how well Tarzan did. You can't underestimate the appeal of the pretty, pretty people, I guess. 2 Link to comment
