S03.E02: Co-op

Recommended Posts

Who played the crush of Abbi as Ilana at the co-op? He looked really familiar, but I couldn't place him...for some reason I was thinking someone from some MTV show from the past.

I didn't recognize him, but in looking him up on IMDB to see what he's done previously, I saw that Melissa Leo played the head of the co-op, and I didn't recognize her at all.

I laughed so hard that I cried when Abbi first came into the co-op as Ilana. And then again when she tried to do the Ilana shake against the wall, and knocked over all the beans. Hearing her bring up things Ilana said cracked me up, especially the "All porn is child porn" part, since Abbi wasn't there for that convo, but I absolutely believe that Ilana has talked about that more than once.

This episode had its flaws for me.  First, I am in deep mourning that we got less of Hannibal and Ilana as he confesses his infidelity.  Ilana and Hannibal were fantastic with that.

The co-op in general was hilarious.  But I felt the Abbi as Ilana flirted a bit too closely with being ridiculous.  And in any other show it would have been.  What it made it work though was seeing Abbi.  I did appreciate that we got to see how she was trying to desperately to tap into what she thought would be an Ilana response or reaction and get a tiny grain of it right but also have her own inner Abbi just get in the way.

But for all the small imperfections of this episode for me, it still is easily one of the funniest and sharpest shows around.

The schooling the boys on the playground was hilarious.  In some ways it was so predictable and yet it worked.  I did keep waiting for some other adult to come along and bust the two when they were at their worst so I was glad they instead got to have their moment.  I did like that Ilana was the one to get taken aback at Abbie being the one to go over the line.

I so want the show to do a Hannibal, Ilana and Abbie spend the day doing errands in Lincoln's Town Car.

Not to be a spoilsport but how many food coops actually have the rule of no one being allowed to send other people to work a shift?  Other than the Park Slope Food Coop, which this clearly was not, and which is, to be kind (something I seldom am about the Park Slope Food Coop), sui generis in the strictness of its rules.  Back when I was the membership coordinator of my food coop I  wept in gratitude when anyone who couldn't make a shift  BOTHERED to get a replacement.  Two or three times a week (honestly it felt like every day) I'd get a frantic phone call from a member who didn't have a key to the place, hadn't been trained on the  cash register, etc etc  -  and the person who was supposed to be opening up and training them had just gone off on the road with their band or something and not bothered to tell me or anyone else or GET A REPLACEMENT.

I think the point was that the requirement was only 6 hours, and it seemed like the timeframe to complete that was really wide.

But I felt the Abbi as Ilana flirted a bit too closely with being ridiculous.

The premise that anyone would confuse Abbi as Ilana was ridiculous, so that's kind of the buy in for the episode. And it seemed like only 2 people knew who the "real" Illana was, so it wasn't like Abbi had to go all out.

One thing I don't know if was caught on, was that Abbi-as-Illana's first task at the co-op was to clean the toilet, like her job at the health club. But instead of just dealing, she channeled Illana and got out of it.

Great call back to the bags, and a second reference to Abbi's hot ass.

Completely ridiculous premise, but pretty hilarious pay off. Abbi`s Illana is somehow even more over the top then real Illana, which is pretty impressive feat.

I figured the game would end with the broads making the kids cry, and them freaking out, but it was still hilarious to see. For a second, I thought it might be a dream sequence.

The Fanny Pack truly is a lost art. Thank you, Broad City, for bringing it back.
