What a beautiful animal. Dangerous animals shouldn't be so dang huggable. So, as someone who has never been camping, is sitting still what you're supposed to do when a bear approaches you? I guess you can't out-run them? 2 Link to comment
peacheslatour July 28, 2016 Share July 28, 2016 I've heard of people playing dead and only getting *slightly* mauled. I'm not very outdoorsy, but I think if you are going into bear country, you should bring some bear spray or possibly a large caliber firearm. 2 Link to comment
valleycliffe July 28, 2016 Share July 28, 2016 i once lived in an area surrounded by hiking trails etc and was told to carry a "cow bell" or whistle while out walking and to blow on the whistle or ring the bell periodically to let the bears know you were coming.. 2 Link to comment
peacheslatour July 28, 2016 Share July 28, 2016 That's a good idea. My son camps a lot and he and his friends get as stinky as they can so the bears can smell them. It's a good idea to make noise so the bears know humans are around. Apparently they are as eager to avoid us as we are to avoid them. 3 Link to comment

peacheslatour July 30, 2016 Share July 30, 2016 Wow! Have you had him almost his whole life? My husband's parents used to keep Cockatiels and they would actually lay eggs and be "born" right there in the house. I don't know how many they kept. I'll have to ask him. How is his foot? 5 Link to comment
jewel21 July 30, 2016 Share July 30, 2016 Yup, I got him at two and a half months old from a breeder. He was bald as a baby. His father plucked all the feathers from the back of his head. They never fully grew in, when he molts you can tell he has a 'thin' spot on the back of his head, heh. His foot is doing good, thanks for asking! It would appear that cracked nail was the culprit. He's climbing all over his cage and flinging himself from one end to the other without hesitation. And his appetite came back a few days ago. It's nice to see him feeling well. 8 Link to comment

Snaporaz July 31, 2016 Share July 31, 2016 (I know we've gotten our knuckles tapped for getting political in the other threads, so I hope there's more leeway in this one. But to be safe, I won't offer any opinions in this story, just observations.) Yesterday, I went to a rally to see one of the major candidates. You probably know me well enough to guess which one she is. ;^) I really did not want to go, because standing in line for hours on a very hot, muggy day to hear speeches I've heard a dozen times is just not really my thing, no matter who the candidate is. But I was pressured by my sister until I relented. I'm glad I went for this reason. Of course, intellectually, I had understood the historic significance, but it hadn't registered emotionally for me until I saw the crowd. I can be a bit cynical sometimes (shocking, but true!), and that is not one of my better attributes. But even the cynic in me could not help but be moved by how many people brought their very small daughters and how excited they were, and then I noticed how many older girls (tweens and teens) were there, and they were equally excited. Then I saw women in their 20s and women in their 80s and all ages in between, and all of the men who were with them, and everyone was equally excited. It was just a very good energy. Who would this mean the most to, I wondered? The younger women, or the older ones who may have thought they'd never see the day? I guess it doesn't matter in the end. Everyone benefits when barriers fall. Oh, and Cupid, when the Khans were mentioned at the rally, the crowd erupted in applause. 6 Link to comment
peacheslatour July 31, 2016 Share July 31, 2016 There were a couple of female delegates at the convention from states which I can't remember now, but anyway they were there to nominate her. These women were very elderly, so elderly that they were born before women were even allowed to vote. They were just glowing with pride. Just the first time during the convention that my hubby and I had to grab for the tissues, one of many. 6 Link to comment

Yeah, never going up there. Ever. In fact, I can't think of a tourist attraction I've ever even been near. Oh, I live next to High Park, and that gets a lot of tourists, so maybe I prevaricate... Having been to, and admired Vancouver and Victoria several times, it's just a whole different thing from most other parts of Canada. Tranna is just big, but people do say it's friendly. Guess they haven't run into me yet. 5 Link to comment

Chickenshit is a lifestyle-choice for me. No problem with your concern there. Every time my daughter flies back and forth to New Haven, I watch the plane on Flight Tracker or Porter the whole way--'cause that's what's on today's menu [sniff]. 2 Link to comment
